Environmental Considerations- Noise and Vibration

The train passes through heavily populated urban area .The noise and vibration for a metro railway
becomes an important criterion from public acceptance view point. The source of noise are (i) railwheel interaction (ii) noise generated from equipment like Blower, Compressor, air conditioner, door,
Inverter etc. (iii) traction motor in running train .The standard to be achieved for noise shall be as
under
a Inside the saloon in running condition shall be less than 74 db
a. Outside the saloon in running condition shall be less than 80 db
8.3.8
e.The rooms meant for attention to Electronic components shall be air conditioned and provided
electrostatic flooring the rest of the rooms shall be suitably ventilated and provided industrial
flooring.
f.All lines shall be provided with electric outlets and compressed air nozzles. The distance
between these shall be such that length of the cables and pipes does not exceed 15 m

2.3.3 Ventilation and Air conditioning

2.3.3.1 The Coach, including the TOs cab, shall be air-conditioned with minimum two airconditioning units in each Coach. A separate supply air duct system shall be
provided for TOs cab and another for the Coach. Air-conditioning in Coaches
shall conform to EN 14750 or equivalent and to internationally accepted
standards and practices.
2.3.3.2 Interior temperature shall be 25C and relative humidity 60% for temperature up to
35C. For ambient temperature above 35C, the interior temperature shall be
kept 10C below the ambient temperature. For the Train Operators cabin, the
interior temperature shall be kept at 23C.
2.3.3.3 In the event of failure of air-conditioning unit/units, harmful quantities of the
refrigerant should not be released inside the compartment and there shall be an
arrangement for forced ventilation of the Coach/Coaches.
2.3.3.4 The air-conditioning system shall provide a high rate of renewed air, maintenance
of constant temperature and take into account, frequent door opening and high User
density. The units shall be compact; roof mounted and of low power consumption.

2.3 Coach Design Requirements

2.3.1.13

(c) Each Coach shall have emergency ventilation windows, two on each side. These
should be opened only by TO or trained staff.
10.10.2.2 Elevators
(m) Operating panel buttons shall be a minimum of 50 mm diameter and shall also have the
operation of the button superimposed on it in Braille. A ventilation opening
or duct to open air of area 0.3 m or, 3.5 % of the cross-section of the
elevator shaft, whichever is greater shall be provided at the top of each
elevator shaft.
(n) The ventilation openings shall have a minimum free area of 0.3 m, or 3.5% of the cross
section of the elevator shaft, whichever is more.
Station Planning and Design
10.1.4 The Station shall be visually appealing; open, spacious, well lit and
consistent with the environment. The Station planning shall permit maximum
cross ventilation and natural light for the Station as well as for the roadway
below the Station.
10.4 Station Quality
(v) the design should make efficient use of space which aesthetically integrates
lighting, communications, ventilation; and electrical and mechanical systems;
and
Standard Engineering Conditions

(iv) Buildings
(c) No potable water from the local authorities shall be used for heating, cooling
and humidification purposes, or vehicle washing without the written consent of
the authority concerned.
