TRAFFIC REMINDERS

and dismissal are
RIGHT turn only.

It has been a beautiful

week for field trips. Many
of our students have had
trips to pick strawberries at
Lever Farms, the State Museum and Saluda Shoals.
We are so grateful for the
sunshine and warm temperatures for these fun, educational activities.
With our school year
quickly coming to a close,
we have a lot of important
information to share. For
parents of our rising 5th
and 6th graders, there are
orientations coming up at
Chapin Intermediate
School (currently Chapin

Speaking of car lines,

please be sure to check out
the traffic reminders. The
guidelines are for your
safety and the safety of our
students, while also being a
good neighbor in our community.
As we begin planning for
next year, it is time to accept nominations for the
2015-2016 PTO board.
We are so fortunate to have
a wonderful group of ladies
serve LMES on the PTO

board. They have worked

diligently to provide resources for our school,
honor our faculty and staff,
and much more. They help
to make LMES a wonderful place to work and learn.
Please consider who you
think would be a great PTO
leader and nominate them.
Or, if you would like to
serve, please nominate
yourself.
Have a wonderful weekend!

that are orange-yellow to

soft and juicy; they should

Delicious spring fruit such

as strawberries, apricots, mangoes
and rhubarb, is in the market
now. This handy guide offers
information on picking the best
spring fruit and the health benefits
of each.
Apricots: Before peaches, plums
and berries appear in markets,
apricots arrive. Ancient Romans
were so impressed by this fruits
early ripening that they took to
calling it praecocium, Latin for
"precocious." Most apricots are
destined to be canned or dried,
and their season is fleeting, so get
fresh ones fast.

What You Get: Low in calories and packed with nutrients, just three fresh apricots
will give you almost half the
vitamin A you need for the
day along with a healthy
dose of vitamin C, potassium
and fiber. In addition, apri-

Fresh apricots can be frozen: Just halve the fruit,

remove the pit and freeze on
a baking sheet. Once frozen,
place the apricots in a sealable plastic bag.

Mangoes: Mangoes have been

integrated into food cultures
across the globe, sold fresh, as
juice, in drinks, in curries and in
desserts, for every meal.

What You Get: The deep

orange color of mangoes
comes from a high content
of beta carotene, a potent
anticancer agent. Mangoes
also contain vitamin C, fiber,
lutein, potassium and ze-

axanthin, phytochemicals known

to boost the immune system.

Shopping Tips: Most mangoes in

U.S. grocery stores are one of
five varieties: Ataulfo, Francine,
Keitt, Kent, Tommy Atkins. Color is not an indication of ripeness, as mangoes come in many
shades of green, yellow and red.
Choose mangoes with a slight
"give" if you plan to eat them in
a day or two and choose firmer
mangoes for enjoying later.

Storage Tips: Unripe mangoes

will ripen at room temperature.
Refrigerate ripe mangoes for up
to 5 days.

Rhubarb: Rhubarb is often called "pie

plant" in the U.S. because its so closely identified with strawberry-rhubarb
pie.

What You Get: Low in calories

and full of fiber, potassium and
vitamin C, rhubarb also contains
catechin, a flavonol that may
contribute to heart health.

Shopping Tip: Look for bright,

crisp stalks with minimal pitting,
dryness and other visible damage.

Storage Tips: Refrigerate rhubarb

in a plastic bag for up to a week.
Freeze diced rhubarb in an airtight container for up to 6
months.

CIS Car Rider Line Procedure

This is the morning and afternoon traffic pattern for all cars that drop
off or pick up at CIS. Please familiarize yourself with this map so that
we can make sure our car loop is safe and efficient.
Parents with students at CIS only should enter the CIS campus from Old Lexington Hwy and
follow the blue arrows when dropping off or picking up students. The only place for CIS students to be dropped off or picked up is the front of the building.
Parents with students at CIS and CES should follow the green arrows, entering the CIS campus from Old Lexington Hwy. These parents should first drop off or pick up CES students at
the CES 5K wing. Parents should then follow the green arrows to merge back into the CIS car
rider line for drop off or pick up of CIS students. A crossing guard will normally be posted
there to assist with traffic direction. The only place for CIS students to be dropped off or
picked up is the front of the CIS building.
NOTE: The green arrows are only for parents of students dropping off at CIS AND CES. Parents using this route should display their car rider tag in their windshield to ensure that they
are allowed to use the CES drop-off area at the CES 5K wing.
