supplies.

The 8004 and 8005 power supplies use different power ratings.
Nortel recommends that you do not operate the Nortel Ethernet
Routing Switch 8600 with a mix of power supply models (8004
and 8005).
If you upgrade the Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 and use a
redundant power configuration, you can hot swap the 8004 power
supply with the 8005 power supply while the Nortel Ethernet
Routing Switch 8600 remains in operation. Do not operate the
chassis with a mix of power supply models for an extended period
of time.
Upgrade the power supplies before you upgrade the modules.

The 8003 chassis provides two bays for 8003AC power supply installation.
Each power supply provides 500 watts (W) of output power for the switch.
Two power supplies constitute a redundant power configuration for all
installed module configurations in the chassis.
For power supply and system power technical specifications, see "Technical
specifications" (page 85).
For information about power supply installation, see
(NN46205-306;
312751-E) or

Chassis installation fundamentals

To configure startup options and to monitor the results of startup diagnostics,

you can attach a PC, laptop, VT100 console or equivalent, such as a PC
terminal emulator, or you can attach a configured AT-compatible modem to
allow dial-in access to startup configuration and diagnostics.

The hardware required to mount the 8010co chassis in an equipment rack

depends on your equipment rack type.
You need a Phillips screwdriver to install the 8010co chassis in a standard
rail-type equipment rack. You need a nutdriver to install the 8010co chassis
in a Hendry rack.
The racks must meet the following specifications:
Heavy-duty steel construction
Electronic Industries Association (EIA) standard hole spacing
Two-post rack with a width of 19 in. (48.26 cm) and a depth of 24 in.
(60.96 cm)
Two-post rack with a width of 23 in. (58.42 cm) and a depth of 24 in.
(60.96 cm) (Requires an EIA 19 to 23-in. adapter. Contact your rack
manufacturer to order the adapter.)
If the rack does not use threaded rail holes, you must use the supplied clip
nuts with the clip nut screws.

Unless you specifically order them, Nortel does not include the cables
required for your network configuration in the 8010co chassis accessory
package. If you require the proper cables, contact your network
administrator.

In a normal power-up sequence, the LEDs light as follows:

After you apply power to the switch, the green LED on each power supply
and fan tray lights, and the Online LED for each module lights amber.
Each module initiates a self-test, during which the port and module
LEDs display various patterns to indicate the progress of the self-test.
Upon successful completion of the self-test (within 2 or 3 minutes after
you apply power for a fully-loaded chassis), the module Online LED
transitions from amber to green.
After 1 minute of operation, the fan tray Pass LED lights steady green.

8010, 8006, and 8003 chassis installation

Allow at least 2 in. (5.1 cm) on each side for proper ventilation and 5
in. (12.7 cm) at the front for power cord clearance.
Attach rubber feet to each marked location on the bottom of the
chassis.
The rubber feet are optional but Nortel recommends that you use
them to help keep the unit from moving.

Mount the chassis in a standard 19 in. equipment rack. If you mount

the chassis in a 23 in. equipment rack, see the rack adapter installation
instructions provided by the rack manufacturer.

You need the following items:

Standard 19-in. (48.2 cm) equipment rack
10 screws and washers (extra screws ship with the 8010 chassis)
Phillips screwdriver

Hold each rack-mounting bracket against one side of the chassis.

Ensure the attachment holes in the bracket match the holes in the
chassis.
Each bracket fits only one side of the chassis. The brackets are
labeled R (right) and L (left). If the mounting holes do not line up
between a bracket and the chassis, try that bracket on the other
side of the chassis.
For more information about positioning the rack-mounting brackets,

8010co chassis installation

If the holes in the vertical supports require clip nuts, insert a clip
nut in each of the 12 locations.

It requires three people to lift the 8010co chassis. To make the

chassis lighter, remove the interface modules and power supplies
before you lift it.

Lift the 8010co chassis onto the installation shelf.

Installing the cable management brackets

Hold the 8010co chassis in position and align the flanged end of
the chassis mounting rail with the six holes on either side of the
vertical rack support.
Make sure that the hole pairs on either side of the vertical support
match horizontally.
Tighten each clip nut with a Phillips screwdriver.
After you secure the 8010co chassis in the rack, you can remove
the installation shelf.

Install the cable management brackets to keep cable clusters fastened

and out of the way but still accessible for maintenance. With the 8010co
chassis, you must install a top cable management bracket and two side
cable management brackets.

Align the mounting retainers on the inside of the top cable

management bracket with the holes on the front of the chassis.
For more information about aligning the mounting retainers, see
"Installing cable management brackets" (page 58).
Push the sides of the top cable management bracket in place.
Insert and tighten the eight screws by using a Phillips screwdriver to
secure the top cable management bracket to the chassis.
For more information about securing the top cable management
bracket, see "Installing cable management brackets" (page 58).

Grounding the chassis

If you install the 8010co BIP, the 8010co equipment shelf load and 8004DC
power rating is limited to 732 W for each power supply. Because of the
difference between the 8010co BIP output circuit protection rating of 30 A,
and the 8004DC power supply input current rating of 29 A at 48 V DC
nominal operating condition, this limitation is required to ensure the product
complies with the electrical code.
The BIP (DS1400001) does not support the 8005DC power supply.

Install the 8010co chassis as described in previous procedures.

Install the 8004DC power supplies as described in
(NN46205-307; 313070-E)
Install the BIP as described in
(312755-G).

Nortel recommends that you ground the 8010co chassis before you connect
power cables or network cables to the switch.

To attach a ground to one of the chassis grounding studs, you need

the following:
one single-hole cable lug that fits over one of the grounding studs
a nut and a locking washer for the grounding stud
a 6-AWG grounding wire long enough to connect to the ground point
7/16-in. hex wrench to fasten the hardware

8010co chassis installation

Locate the shelf grounding point on the rack. This grounding point
can be a grounding strip at the back base, top, or side of the rack.
"Rack grounding strip example" (page 60) shows an example of a
rack grounding strip. Your rack grounding strip can look different
than the one shown in this example.
Attach the lug ends of the chassis ground cables to the rack
grounding strip.
Use a 7/16-in. hex wrench to fasten the hardware in the correct
order. For more information about attaching the lug ends, see "Rack
grounding strip example" (page 60).

The following figure shows the location of the ground studs on the 8010co
chassis rear panel.

unprotected position. After you successfully load the configuration file and
save your configuration, you can write-protect the memory card for backup
purposes.
Typically, you do not operate a Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 with a
write-protected memory card. Make a copy of your configuration on another
memory card, write-protect the second card, and store it in a safe place. If
you do not use a second memory card, you can copy your configuration to a
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) or Trivial FTP (TFTP) server.

To remove the card, press the eject button above the memory card
receptacle.
Pull the card out of the card receptacle.

not blink (and you believe
that traffic is present).

The switch is experiencing

a port connection problem,
or the switchs link partner
is not auto-negotiating
properly.

Verify that the cable connections to

the link partner are correct. Verify port
configuration parameters for both ends
of the connection. Move the cable
to another port to see whether the
problem occurs on the new port.

The Link/Activity LED blinks

continuously.

There may be a high traffic

load or possible packet
broadcast storm.

Verify port configuration parameters

for both ends of the connection.

Troubleshooting

The Online LED is steady

amber for longer than 3
minutes.

Software incompatibility
exists, or the module cannot
communicate with the
master module over the
backplane.

Use the
command to
check the system log for indications
of communication problems. Use the
command to download a new
software image.

The Master LED on a

module in slot 1 or slot 2 is
amber.

The module has detected

a system clock generation
failure on its own circuitry.

Replace the module; make sure that it

is in the correct slot.

The Fault LED is blinking

amber.

A chassis failure has been

detected.

From the console management station,

use the
command to check
the system log for information about
hardware failures.

This LED has significance only for the

module in slot 1 or slot 2 that provides
the clock function for the switch.

Check the fan tray to make sure both

fans are running.
Check the switch power supplies; one
may have stopped functioning.
The module may have failed to read
the MAC address from the chassis
backplane. If this is the case, arrange
to replace the chassis.
The Fault LED is steady
amber.

The module failed its

power-on self-test. A
diagnostic or hardware
failure has been detected.

Replace the module.

No LEDs are lit.

A hardware failure has been

detected.

Turn the switch power off and then

turn it on again.

If a module failure occurs, check for possible backplane connection

problems. Make sure that the module is correctly seated in the backplane
connector and that the retaining screws are securely tightened.
If a module fails during module initialization and the replacement module is
the same module type, in rare cases, the new module may not initialize.
To work around this issue, follow the steps in either workaround 1 or 2.

Troubleshooting

Port connection problems are usually traced to a poor cable connection or

to an improper connection of the port cables at either end of the link. To
remedy such problems, make sure that the cable connections are secure
and that the cables are connected to the correct ports at both ends of the
link.

Cabling for 10BASE-T networks can consist of two-pair Category 3, 4, or

5 unshielded twisted pair (UTP) wiring. However, to prepare for future
upgrades to Fast Ethernet, Nortel strongly recommends that you use all
Category 5 cable in your network.
Ethernet 10BASE-T network installations use cables consisting of two pairs
of twisted pair wiresone pair to send data and one to receive data. These
wires must connect to another 10BASE-T station that has the sending pair
attached to its receiving pair and vice versa. If the two nodes are wired
alike, they both attempt to send data out on the same RJ-45 pins. In such a
case, a straight-through cable does not work. However, a crossover cable
operates normally.
The 8648TXE, 8648TXM, and 8632TXE modules are designed to have
Ethernet network interface cards (NICs) connect directly to their RJ-45 ports
using straight-through cables. NICs port types are MDI. However, if an
8648TXE, 8648TXM, or 8632TXE module must connect to a hub or another
switch that follows usual conventions, a crossover cable is required because
the port types are MDI-X. You only need crossover cables when connecting
cables to devices that have the same port type.

Cable connection problems

The 100 Mbit/s ports and 1 Gbit/s ports are designed to operate using
Category 5 UTP cabling only. To minimize crosstalk noise, maintain the twist
ratio of the cable up to the point of termination; untwist at any termination
cannot exceed 0.5 in. (1.27 cm).

Cables for the GBICs vary depending on the specific GBIC type. For
information about the cable requirements for GBICs, see
(NN46205-305; 318034-D).
