IthinkLiteracyallowsustoparticipateinsocietyinmanyways.Ratherthanjust
"understandinglanguage",Literacyisatoolwhichallowsustouseourunderstandingof
languagetomakeconnections,reflectionsandarguments,holddiscussionsinvarious
contextsandwithdifferentagesandstages,makeconsciousandinformeddecisionsabout
ourhealthandourlivelihoods,engageinsocialcontextsandconnecttoindividuals,
communityandthewiderworld,bothinreallife(IRL)facetofacesituations,written
communication(readingandwriting)andelectronically(throughimages,links,written
word,videos,mediaandsocialmediaetcetera).
Oneexamplewhichcomestomymindisumpiring.Iumpirenetballatthelocaland
TerritoryLevel,andhavedonesoonandoffsinceIhurtmykneeduringanetballtraining
whenIwasinschool.CurrentlyIamanationallyrecognisedBbadgeumpire,which
meansIamhigherthanaCbadge,butalongwayoffbeinganAorAAbadged
internationalumpire.Thedifferencebetweentheselevelsareexpectationofrules
knowledge,interpretationandapplication.
Newumpiresreadtherules,andrememberthem,takeanonlinewrittentestandattenda
shortpracticlesessionwhichgivesthempracticeinpositioning,whistleblowingandbeing
oncourtwithplayers.Anewumpiremay,intheearlystagesofumpiringbeoutof
position,speaktoosoftly,applytherulesdifferentlyindifferentcourtareas(e.g.thegoal
ring),blowthewhistleintheotherumpire'sareaandmayuseincorrectterminology,
withoutunderstandingtheissuesthatallofthesemaycause.
Amoreexperiencedumpireunderstandswhypositioningisimportant,howandwhereto
beatanygiventime,theneedforspeed,volumeandappropriatedress.Thisumpirewill,
onanincreasinglyinformedbasis,addappropriateandefficientsignalling,ensurecorrect
terminologyisusedandapplytherulesallthewaydownthecourt.Thisumpirewillalso
addanelementofcommonsensewhenapplyingtherules,andwillunderstandthenature
ofcauseandeffectwheninterpretingplay.Whilstthisumpirewillbecomemoreand
moreconfidentinagamesituation,andathigherlevelsofplay,thisumpiremayalso
becomelessofficiousandoverlyconfidentintheirownimportanceandincreasingly
recognisethattheumpireistheretosupporttheplayers.
Ithinktheaboveparagraphsdemostratesthatthejobofliteracyistoallowpeopletoapply
knowledgecritically,andalongsideotherknowledgetoincreasethevalueoftheir
participationinagivencontext.

Iforgottomentiontheseskills(netballliteracy)haveallowedmetotravelandtomeet
peoplefromaroundthecountry,andindeedtheworld,andbuildnetworksfromwhichI
drawinformationwhenneeded.Also,Ihavebeenprivilegedtobeabletosharemy
knowledgewithothers(trainandmentorjuniorandnewumpires)aswellasbeingableto
engageindiscussionaboutumpiring.TheconfidenceIhavegainedfromUmpiring
netballhasallowedmetoputmyself"outthere"toumpiretennisaswell,andconsidering
IhavenowumpiredatthreeAustralianOpens,IwouldsuggestthatIhaveafairlliteracy
levelintennisumpiringtoo!

Thankyou(again)fortheonlinesession,itwasgreattobeabletointeractwithyou,and
myfellowstudents.
Iusedanexampleearliertoday,whichrelatedtomyexperiencesasanetballumpire.
Whenconsideringthisexamplefurther,withrelationtotheaboveframeworkseveral
thingscometomindimmediately.Onasociallevel,thisinteresthasallowedmetojoin
networkswithpeopleofsimilarinterests,butfrommanywalksoflifelocally,andata
stateandNationallevel,onlineandinperson.Ethically,Iunderstandthattherearesome
ruleswhichmaybedifferentforpeoplefromdifferentcultures(e.g.uniformvariations)
andvariationsorruleswhichconsiderpeoplewithspecialneeds(e.g.wheelchairnetball
orglasseswhilstnecessaryforsome,couldalsobedangerousinagameofnetballsothey
mustbeattachedusingasportsbandnotjusttuckedbehindyourears!)andIknowhow
toenforcetheserulesand/orvarianceswithconsiderationofthefeelingsofallinvolved.I
amabletocriticallyandsometimescreativelyinterperettherules(andmy
signals!)inwayswhichbenefittheflowofthegame,whilstconsideringthesafetyof
players.Iunderstandthatrulesmustbeenforcedfairly,forthebenefitbothteamsandthe
spectatorsandthatImustkeepabreastofanychangestothevalidityofmy
interpretations,orchangestotherules.
Irecognisethatumpiresmustalsoconsiderotherofficialsandshouldalwaysact
appropriatelyandprofessionallyforexamplenottalkingaboutotherofficialsunlessthey
specificallyaskabouttheirownwork,andbeingawareofprivacyconsiderationsinany
givensituation.

overtheyears,butalwaysatalevelwhichissuitabletotheperson'sunderstanding.I
welcomefeedbackonmyownumpiringskillsandlooktoimprovemyselfthrough
implentationofthefeedbackandotherlearningopportunitiessuchasparticipatingin
onlinediscussionboardsdedicatedtoumpiresand/ortherules.Irecognisethatasa
literatepersonImustconsiderthedifferentliteraciesrequiredforparticipationina'real
world'interraction,ascomparedtoan'online'interraction,whilstacknowledgingthatthere
aremanysimilarconsiderationsastoaudience,languageuseandfairness.
Iamoftenaskedtoclarifyrules,andtomentornewumpires,therebyincreasingmy
confidenceinmyselfandmyabilities.Iunderstandthatmyqualificationssupportthe
valueofmyknowledgesharing,andthatmycredentialsarerecognisedasevidenceofmy
knowledge.However,IalsorecognisethatIcanalwayslearnmore.
Meanwhile,IfullyrecognisethattheconfidenceandinterpersonalskillsIhavelearnedas
anetballumpirehaveallowedmetobranchoutintodifferentsportingareas,bothwithin
netball(ScoringBenchOfficial,CoachandManager)andothersports.
IamcurrentlybuildingonmyliteracyasaTennisOfficial,havingstartedasaplayerIam
nowaLevelOTenniscoach,LevelBReferee,LevelCChairUmpire,CourtSupervisorand
anInternationalLevelLineUmpirewhohasumpiredat3AustralianOpens,2Brisbane
Internationalsand1FederationCup.
Asaliterateperson,Iunderstandthatthismaybeinterestingandthoughtprovoking
eveninspiringtosomepeople,buttoadifferentaudienceofpeople,whohavenointerest
insportortennisthismaysoundcompletelyuninteresting!InwhichcaseIwouldneedto
findsomethingdifferenttotalkaboutwiththem!
Asyoucansee....
AlargechunckofmylifeoutsideofuniversityisSportRelated,soIwill
seriouslyneedtoconsidersomeoftheotherareasofmylifesuchaswork,
familyanduniversity.
