Week 3- Directions for Completing Keyboarding Assignment

Assignment for weeks 3-10, Due week 10


This Typing Assignment is OPTIONALBUT REQUIRED FOR HEALTH TECH STUDENTS. You will be
working on this assignment during Weeks 3 through 10. You must upload your report (as shown below) when you
are able to type net 35wpm on a 3-minute timed writing with 3 or less errors.
Note to Health Tech Students ONLY: Your department
requires you to type 45 wpm on a 3-minute timed writing with
3 errors or less (without looking at the keyboard and with your
hands in the correct home row position). If you do not complete
this REQURIRED assignment, you may have to enroll and
complete a keyboarding course at another school.

To complete this assignment, perform the following steps:

Go to www.typingweb.com/tutor (this is a free program).


When the login dialog box pops-up on your screen, fill in the information under the Already have an
account section as shown below:
a. (IMPORTANT: We have already created a username and password for you)
Type your username which will be DA followed by your De Anza ID (no spaces) as shown
below. Example: DA12345678. DO NOT CREATE A NEW ACCOUNT.
b. Your password will be the same as your user ID (i.e. DA12345678)

Complete ONE of the following two options depending on your CURRENT typing skill level:
(Note: If you can already type more than net 35 wpm with 3 or less errors, skip to steps step 5 and 6
below).
a. If you CANT type without looking at the keyboard, you should start with the BEGINNER
course as shown in the steps below:
i. Click on START to the right of BEGINNER COURSE as shown below.

ii. After completing all the Beginner Course lessons, if you can't type net 35 wpm with 3 or
less errors, complete YOUR PROBLEM KEYS (as shown below).

iii. Keep working on YOUR PROBLEM KEYS until you can reach your goal. At the end
of the YOUR PROBLEM KEYS if you still can't type net 35 wpm with 3 or less errors,
complete the INTERMEDIATE course, and if necessary the ADVANCED course.

b.

iv. When have achieved net 35wpm with 3 or less errors, be sure to continue with
REQUIRED step 5 and 6 below to demonstrate proficiency.
If you CAN type without looking at the keyboard (with your hands in the proper home row
position) but CANNOT type net 35 wpm with 3 errors or less, complete the following steps to
improve your speed.
i. Complete the first 2 lessons of the Beginner course (The Home Row Keys and the Top
Row Keys) to make sure you are using the proper finger positions. Click on START to
the right of BEGINNER course and complete the first 2 lessons.

ii. Next, click on START to the right of INTERMEDIATE COURSE as shown below.
Complete all the lessons in the Intermediate course.

iii. Start your TYPING TEST by clicking TEST (as shown below). This will assess your
problem areas.

iv. Complete YOUR PROBLEM KEYS by clicking on the link as shown below.

v. If you havent reached net 35 wpm with 3 or less errors, start the INTERMEDIATE
course. (This goal applies only to health tech students)

vi. At the end of the INTERMEDIATE course, if you can't type net 35 wpm with 3 or less
errors, complete YOUR PROBLEM KEYS again if necessary.

vii. If necessary to complete your goal, complete the ADVANCED course.


viii. When have achieved net 35wpm with 3 or less errors, be sure to continue with
REQUIRED step 5 and 6 below to demonstrate proficiency.

FOR HEALTH TECH STUDENTS ONLY: ONCE YOU HAVE ACHIEVED net 35 wpm with 3 or
less errors, you will need to complete a timed writing to show that you have achieved your goal and then
upload your certification form by completing the following steps: (For this exercise to qualify as a
replacement for a keyboarding course, you may also need to present the Certificate to your Health Tech
Advisor.)
a. Click on Certifications and then click General Certification as shown below.

Take the typing test (note: space only once after a period while taking this test.) The test will take
at least 15 to 20 minutes. You will be completing at least 5 timed writings! (Dont stop after
one or two typing screens) When you get to the end of the test, you will see a dialog box similar
to what is shown below. Click RETURN TO COURSE.

Under Recently Completed Certificates, click General CertificationCertify Score.

d.

After answering Yes to Certify Score, a Certificate will appear, Type your name, Click Update
and Print your Certificate (see graphics below).

At the Opening Certificate Dialog box (shown below), click Open With and then click OK.

f.

Click File, Save As, and browse to save the file on your desktop. Once it has been saved to
your Desktop, you can submit this certificate into Simnet as described below. You can close the
pdf file once saved. There is no need to print the certificate.

SUMBIT YOUR CERTIFCATE TO YOUR INSTRUCTOR IF YOUR A HEALTH TECH


STUDENT,
a. Log into simnetonline.com,
i. In Simnetonline, click on the RESOURCES button then click on the Week 3
DROPBOX assignment as shown below.

ii. When prompted as shown below, click Upload and Save. Navigate to your desktop
where you have saved your homework assignment and then click Open. Next, click the
Submit button to submit your assignment as shown below. Note: once you have made a
submission, the item will no longer appear in your dropbox.

You have completed this exercise. Go into simnetonline, and complete the rest of your assignments.
