How hard is it to assemble a kit?
All of our kits include pre-cut wood parts, complete assembly
instructions, and all of the necessary hardware and strings. You
provide your own woodworking glue, hand tools, sandpaper, and
finishing supplies.
We have given each kit a Hammer Rating as a rough guide to how
difficult the kit is to assemble. All of our kit directions are available for download from our website and we strongly encourage you
to check them out. This is the best way to get an accurate feel for
what is involved in building each particular kit.
A breeze! Two or three evenings time for assembly.
Good for building your woodworking confidence.

What does In-the-white mean?

In-the-white refers to an instrument that has been assembled but
not yet finished and strung. Many of our instruments are now
available in-the-white. This is a nice option if you would like to
customize an instrument with your own decorations but dont want
to assemble the complete kit.
If I buy a kit, do I need blueprints?

No. We do offer blueprints for many of our instruments but these
are intended for serious woodworkers that would like to build from
scratch using their own lumber.
What kind of warranty do you offer?

To ensure your satisfaction, we guarantee our products from the
date of purchase up to:
30 Days - For returning any finished item in perfect condition for
refund or exchange.
One Year - For returning any re-usable kit for refund or exchange,
even if you have started to assemble it. We are also available for
hire to finish what you have started.
Five Years - For repairing or replacing any parts that fail due to
defects in material or factory workmanship.

Building the pre-cut kit is a very rewarding experience. The Voyageur Harp kit brings together all of the lessons we have learned in
over 35 years of designing harp kits. You can assemble this harp in
about 20-30 hours using mostly hand tools. A router is helpful for
rounding corners, but an electric hand sander would do the job as

Pre-cut kit
The pre-cut kit is a 15-20 hour project that has been greatly
simplified because of our easy bolt-together neck configuration. The body can be assembled using mostly hand tools
although a router (optional) does speed up the project.
We offer the Smartwood in-the-white as well. This configuration means the body has been assembled by us. You
will apply the finish, bolt the neck together, and install the
hardware.
This is our only harp we offer finished but unstrung. Order
this version and all you will have to do is bolt the neck together and install the strings.

Our Gothic Harp is a popular model

among music therapists because
it has monofilament nylon strings
throughout, giving it a warm, mellow
tone and light string tension perfectly
suited to healing applications.
Building the pre-cut kit is more

challenging due to the curves built
into the soundboard and back.
Youll want an extra pair of hands to
help install these pieces. You will
also want a large work table, a half
dozen clamps, electric drill, power
sander, and a jig-saw, along with
normal household tools.
We have been building this model for

over 25 years and it has proved to be
our most stable harp, requiring less
tuning than any other model. The
stability comes from a combination
of lower string tension and the slight
curve built into the soundboard and
back piece.
Blueprints for this harp are available for the serious woodworker
looking for a challenge!
Harp is shown with optional levers. Any Musicmakers harp can be fully outfitted with sharping

I built my harp with absolutely no woodworking experience.

I didnt understand at the time what a meaningful project it

Harps are diatonic instruments. This means that,

without help, they will only play the notes of a major scale, confining the harp to just one key. Sharping levers are added to harps so you can quickly
change keys without re-tuning the harp.
Every Musicmakers harp can be completely outfitted
with any of these levers. If you are able to successfully build one of our harps from a kit, you have
the skills to install these levers. We provide excellent
installation instruction for each brand. The Jordan
and Universal levers are the easiest to install but the
Loveland Levers arent much more difficult and offer
a more refined look.

finished harp.

This ingenious music stand-without-the-stand attaches directly to

the pillar of your harp. Completely adjustable in height and tilt,
the Harp Desk grips the pillar with cork padding, so it will not

The Mountain Dulcimer is a true piece

of American Folk Art. The instrument
comes to us from the southern Appalachian Mountains which is where it gets
its other common name, the Appalachian
Dulcimer. Its long history and continued
popularity are due to the fact that the
instrument is relatively easy to build and
simple to play. The sound is pure, sweet,
and as simple as the pastoral pleasures
these instruments evoke.
Learning to play is easy. You can pick out
a tune by ear using just one finger on the
diatonic fingerboard. Or you might try
learning from one of the instruction books
listed below.

Folks have been making these by hand

here in America since the 19th century.
Musicmakers has made it easy for you
to join this rich tradition with two different syles of mountain dulcimers. The
hourglass style is a more traditional shape
and the teardrop style is slightly easier to
build.
Expect to spend between 20-30 hours
building from our pre-cut kit. Adding some decorative inlay banding (page
27) around the edge is great way to
customize this project. Youll need a router
if you want to do that.

The Hammered Dulcimer is a fascinating instrument

to play. You strike the strings with hammers and each
note rings out beautifully. This makes even simple,
unadorned melodies sound rich and full. The rhythmic
possibilites inherent in the striking style of the hammers make this a fun percussive instrument too.
Our pre-cut kit takes about 20-30 hours to build.

Youll want a good supply of clamps, a power sander,
and a drill press for this project. You can order some
rosettes (page 27) for the soundholes or cut out your
own design! Installing all 66 strings is a wonderful way
to cultivate patience.

Strumbly has been one of our most
popular projects since we introduced it in
2006. If you can count to ten, you can
play Strumbly. Weve heard from lots of
people that were frustrated with guitar
but found success on Strumbly. We
have a play-by-number songbook written specifically for this instrument that
includes over 125 songs.

What is Strumbly?
Simply put, Strumbly is the easiest
musical instrument you will ever play.
Our pre-cut kit is about a 10-15 hour project. Youll

glue the frame to the neck which is greatly simplified
thanks to the slots cut into the heel. Glue on the front
and back and then trim and sand. The fret-slots are
pre cut and the holes for the tuners are pre-drilled.
Sand, decorate, apply some varnish, string it up and
start strumming! Download the assembly instructions

Our pre-cut kit is quite easy to assemble. The most challenging

part of this kit is installing the frets and sanding them flush with the
edges of the fingerboard.

Micah is not quite five. He was able to help with the sanding, screwing the
neck to the box (after I drilled the holes), holding one end of the strings
taut while I tied the knots, threading the strings through the holes in the
tuning pins, and turning the tuning key. It was his choice to mount the
neck on the bottom of the box so he can open the secret compartment more
easily. I glued on the toothpicks, broke off the ends and applied the handrubbed (tung oil) finish.

tools and only take between 4-8 hours to assemble. These
are fun weekend projects and all are suitable for kids ages
10+
The best thing about these instruments is that they really

Wipe-on gel urethane is simply the best! No drips, no brushes to
clean up, great looks, excellent protective coating in 5 easy steps:
VARNISH
1) Sand the wood smooth with 180 grit sandpaper.

2) Wipe on first coat of gel varnish to seal the wood, let dry fully.
3) Sand the dried varnish baby-smooth with 600 grit sandpaper.

5) Repeat steps 3 & 4 until it looks professional, the more coats, the better!

I recently bought a smartwood harp kit from you and am extremely pleased at the resulting instrument. Everything turned
out beautifully! The harp sounds great (beautiful, resonant, and
sustained tone)... I wont be using my previous harp anymore! I
love that the smartwood harp is a floor harp - no more harp stools
for me now, either.
I also appreciate the card I received in the mail shortly after my
purchase. Its nice to have this level of customer service! Im definitely going to check you guys out when Im ready to upgrade to
my next harp.
Ive attached a picture of my finished harp (I also restore antique
furniture as a hobby - what a great combination of hobbies this
harp project was!).
