As we continue to think about
the Christian home, we are going
to focus on husbands and wives
for the next two weeks (weather
permitting!). It is so easy to just
talk about mothers and fathers,
but fail to speak about the hus-
band-wife relationship.
Many families do not have chil-
dren, some by choice, others due
to difficulties. However, a hus-
band and wife still have a great
deal of work to do in order to
have a home as God would have
it. When they are willing to work
at being the right kind of hus-
band and wife, though, the rela-
tionship will be truly fulfilling.
Husbands, today, we are going to

study our God-given role. We are
commanded to love our wives, “as
Christ loved the
church” (Ephesians 5:25). While
there is no way we, in our human-
ity, can fully measure up to that
perfect standard, that does not
give us the right to avoid the effort
to do so. Christ loved the church
in every way possible, and hus-
bands are to do the same for their
wives.
While Paul goes on to state that
Christ even died for the church,
that is not the only way in which
He loved her. The cross provides
the most obvious expression of
the love Christ had for the church,
but Christ loved the church in His
life, too. He was never embar-

is His desire that the church be the
very best it can be. The same should
be true of husbands toward their
wives.
Far too many treat their spouse as
nothing more than a punch line, but
we should never be embarrassed to
speak proudly about our spouse. We
should always seek her best, and
want her to be the very best she can
be.
Those are but two examples, but
they show the depth of the love of
Christ for the church. Husbands, do
we love our wives that deeply?
