Paper 2: Analytical essay

Choose one of the following questions and write a five-page, double-spaced essay. Your
paper should offer a coherent, original argument and back that argument with evidence from
the texts and lectures. The completed assignment is due electronically, via the course
website, to your TF by the start of lecture on Wednesday, October 29.
1. Compare the arguments of participants in the Scopes Trial with the arguments of
participants in the late-nineteenth-century debates over Darwinisms impact on religion and
conceptions of truth. How did these arguments resemble one another and how did they
differ? Cite the trial transcript and at least two of the following: Agassiz, Gray, Peirce,
James (The Will to Believe).
2. Religions role in both American higher education and the American public schools
changed substantially in the late nineteenth century. How did those changes resemble one
another and how did they differ? Was either or both an example of secularization? (Be
sure to spell out carefully how you are defining that term.) Cite the Eliot reading and at least
two of the following: Harpers Weekly, Zions Herald, Brownson (The School Question).
3. Compare the arguments of the defense team in the Scopes Trial with the arguments of the
late-nineteenth-century freethinkers Ingersoll and Stanton. How did these arguments
resemble one another and how did they differ? Cite the trial transcript and the Ingersoll and
Stanton readings.
4. Were the views of Mary Baker Eddy and Alfred Russel Wallace scientific or unscientific?
(Be sure to spell out carefully how you are defining the terms science and scientific.)
Cite the Eddy and Wallace readings as well as lecture material.
5. We have seen two examples in recent lectures where reformers hoped to apply science
directly to social policy. Compare the project of the ethical economists with that of the
eugenicists. How did these endeavors resemble one another and how did they differ? Were
these initiatives scientific or religious or both? (Be sure to spell out carefully how you are
defining the terms scientific and religious.) Cite the Ely reading and at least two of the
following: Davenport, Wiggam, Donaldson.
