Background
With the development of the society, people have more requirements on telecommunication services. Besides traditional voice,
TDM and Internet access services, users require more new broadband services such as IPTV, VoD, online game, remote education,
remote medicine, video conference and video phone, etc. These
new broadband services help carriers to attract more users and
get generous profits.
FTTH is the target of the access layer network development. The
network solution based on PON topology meets the network topology characteristics of the access network. As an optimum transmission medium, optical fiber can provide unlimited bandwidth to
support various services access. The passive ODN device is small
and does not need any active apparatus. It has powerful lighteningfroof and anti-interference capability. The long distance between OLT and ONU meets the networking requirement of carriers.
There had been over 12.6 million FTTH subscribers based on PON
technology around the world by the end of 2007, and would be up
to 80 million in the year 2010.
ZXA10 xPON passive optical access network is a comprehensive
optical solution to adapt to various networking scenarios. To meet
the development tendency of telecommunication network from IP
network to NGN network, ZXA10 xPON passive optical access network integrates EPON/GPON, Ethernet and xDSL technologies to
support the access of various services.

test functions:
Environment monitoring interface collecting environment parameters such as temperature, humidity, power, smoke and
entrance control.
Both the main control card and service cards support in-service upgrade and the version rollback operation in case of an
upgrade failure.
Working Principle
This topic includes the following:
Service Flow
Power card
The control and switch card contains the system control module,
data switch module, TDM switch module and clock module.
The system contains clock bus, control bus and data bus.
Control bus: It provides communication channel for the control card and service cards, implementing system management
and control.
Service Flow
This topic introduces ZXA10 C300 unicast data service flow, multicast service flow, TDM service flow and clock signal processing.
Unicast Data
Service
The unicast data service includes VoIP, VPN, VoD and HIS services.
These services are processed as follows at OLT.
Upstream
i.
Downstream
i.
10
11
TDM Service
Upstream
i.
TDM data stream is encapsulated into data packets according to PWE3/MEF/ITU-T standard and added with a time
stamp. Then, Data packets are encapsulated into Ethernet
data packets and added with CVLAN. ONT maps data packets to relevant GEM PORT according to C-VLAN.
ii. Ethernet data packets are added with SVLAN at PON card
and transmitted to the main control card in 1:1 mode. The
main control card sends Ethernet data packets to TDM processing card according to SVLAN + CVLAN in 1:1 mode.
TDM processing card resumes Ethernet data packets to
TDM data stream and maps to E1/T1 interface or E1/T1
time slot of STM1/4. Finally, TDM data stream is transmitted to TDM line interfa in E1/T1 or STM-1/4 format.
Downstream
i.
ii. The main control card sends Ethernet data packets to GPON
card in 1:1 mode according to SVLAN + CVLAN.
iii. GPON card bridges data packets to the relevant GEM PORT
in 1:1 mode and sends to PON port after peeling off SVLAN.
ONT finds CES resumption processing module according to
CVLAN. CES resumption processing module resumes Ethernet data packets to TDM data stream and sends it to
E1/T1/E3/T3 interface
Clock processing:
GPON system supports two TDM data stream clock resumption
modes:
Adaptive
If the public reference clock does not exist, adaptive clock resumption can be used to synchronize clock. The disadvantage
is that the clock is not so accurate or stable because of loss of
packets or transmission delay.
Differential
Differential clock resumption is to put the difference of the
transmitting clock and public reference clock into the time
stamp of data packets. Compared to adaptive clock resumption, differential clock resumption provides more stable and
accurate clock. The disadvantage is that it needs a clock link
between CES gateway devices.

ZXA10 GPON passive optical access system provides FTTx solutions to users.
This topic introduces the following networking solutions:
FTTH
FTTB/C
FTTC
FTTO
Video Monitoring
Network Optimization
FTTH
FTTH provides fiber to the home access service. In this scenario,
central office equipment, OLT, is located in central equipment room
or the equipment room in the residential area. It uplinks to the
service network via N*GE and downlinks to ONU via splitters. The
splitter is placed in a fiber cross-connect cabinet in the residential
areas equipment room or in the building. ONU is placed in the
building or at the subscribers home.
Different types of ONU provide different interfaces to support various access services. ONU is connected to a phone via POTS interface or connected to IAD and family gateway via FE interfaces,
providing video, audio and data services such as Internet access,
IPTV, CATV and VoIP.
FTTH is suitable for new buildings, villas, old building with network
equipment rebuilt. Figure 14 shows FTTH networking.
FIGURE 14 FTTH NETWORKING
46
FTTB
FTTB provides fiber to the building access service. In this scenario, central office equipment, OLT, is located in central equipment room. It uplinks to the service network via N*GE and downlinks to ONU via splitters. The splitter is placed in a fiber cross-connect cabinet in the building or in the basement. Multi floors can
share a splitter which is connected to each floor by using one-level
or two-level splitting. ONU is placed in the fiber cross-connect cabinet in the building, the low-voltage shaft or mounted on the wall.
Different types of ONU provide different interfaces to support various access services. ONU is connected to a phone via POTS interface or connected to IAD and family gateway via FE interfaces,
providing video, audio and data services such as Internet access,
IPTV and VoIP.
Figure 15 shows FTTB networking.

FTTB + xDSL
Figure 16 shows FTTB + xDSL networking.
FIGURE 16 FTTB + XDSL NETWORKING
Fiber terminal points are distributed in the building. MDU device is used to provide xDSL interface. The existing network
resources can be fully used.
ZTE provides medium-scale MDU such as ZXDSL 9806H.
ZXDSL 9806H provides 96 ADSL/ADSL2+/SHDSL ports or 64
VDSL2 ports. ZXDSL 9806H is uplinked to OLT via PON port.
47
FTTB+LAN
Figure 17 shows FTTB + LAN networking.
FIGURE 17 FTTB + LAN NETWORKING
Fiber terminal points are distributed in the building. MDU device is used to provide Ethernet interface or VoIP interface.
The distance between ONU and the end user cannot exceed
100 meters.
ZTE provides medium-scale MDU such as ZXA10 F820. ZXA10
F820 provides 24 10 M/100 M Ethernet ports, 16 E1 ports or
32 POTS ports, meeting the requirements of various users.
FTTCab
FTTCab provides fiber to the curb access service. In this scenario,
central office equipment, OLT, is located in central equipment room
or the equipment room in the residential area. It uplinks to the
service network via N*GE and downlinks to ONU via splitters.
MDU is placed in the fiber cross-connect cabinet at the curb. The
upstream data is connected to WAN via GPON. The downstream
data is connected to users via twisted pair cable. Each access device covers 800 to 1000 users. ADSL2+, VDSL2, SHDSL or LAN
access modes are supported. For commercial or information districts which ask for more bandwidth, fiber connection is suggested.
Figure 18 shows FTTCab networking.
48
FTTO
FTTO provides fiber to the office access service. In this scenario,
central office equipment, OLT, is located in central equipment
room. It uplinks to the service network via N*GE and downlinks
to ONU via splitters. ONU is placed on the desk or mounted on
the wall or placed outdoor.
In FTTO scenario, ZXA10 C300 works together with ZXA10
MSAN in networking, supporting various access modes such as
ADSL/ADSL2+, PBX, DDN and E1 dedicated line. The unified
network management system NetNumen N31 is used for management.
Figure 19 shows FTTO networking.
FIGURE 19 FTTO NETWORKING

Dedicated line
In dedicated line scenario, each user use one dedicated fiber.
PTP technology isolates users securely.
Video Monitoring
Compare with general telecommunication services, video monitoring service requires more upstream bandwidth. With the advantages in bandwidth, QoS and security, GPON technology provides
better video monitoring service.
Figure 21 shows video monitoring networking based on PON technology.

Wireless Communication
Base Station Access
In rebuilding 2G base station access node or in establishing 3G
base station access networking, the traditional SDH network has
many disadvantages. By using the IP and TDM core, ZTE GPON
system is capable of providing better TDM and data services.
Figure 22 shows wireless communication base station access networking.

Network Optimization
In the current networks, there are still some old transport systems
in use, such as SDH and PDH, which only support narrowband ser-
