Golden Island Film Festival highlights Cyprus cinema

Welcome to the very first Golden Island International Film

Festival (GIIFF), created by UK based charity Balk Arts and
Creditwest Bank. This time last year we were sowing the
seeds for GIIFF, and it gives me great pleasure to now be
introducing the inaugural Festival programme. Over an eight
day period, GIIFF will be screening nearly 30 feature and
more than 35 short films, putting the spotlight on new
cinema from around the world and a selection of new and
old films made in Cyprus. Established directors such as
Dervi Zaim, whose new film Fish opens the Festival, feature
alongside emerging talent such as Stefan Georgiou (Dead Cat)
and Oggi Tomic (Finding Family).
Yet GIIFF is far more than just exposing new films to
Cyprus. Since its formal launch in May, the Festival has
created a great buzz on and off the island. Our patron,
Hollywood actor Tamer Hassan has said the sky is the limit
for the talent in Cyprus and so it should be. GIIFF not only
aims to help grow the profile and skills of Cypriot
filmmakers, but to also serve as a catalyst for new joint
ventures by bringing a host of internationally renowned
producers, directors, writers and actors to the island. We are
also very happy to complement GIIFF with social
responsibility projects. Reel Skills, have enabled us to run
workshops on how to organise film festivals. Film Beyond
Borders, means 25 participants from the UK can travel to
Cyprus to make a short film and also support the Festival
as volunteers. We strongly believe that cultural, social and
artistic interaction overcomes barriers.
That we have travelled so far in such a short space of time
is down to the dedication and positive energy of the GIIFF
team. And of course, GIIFF has been made possible through
the generous support of Creditwest Bank and its parent
company Altnba Holding. I extend to them and the
Festival team, and to all our sponsors and partners, my
heartfelt thanks. I also extend my warmest appreciation to
all the filmmakers for their interest in GIIFF. We had over
100 submissions! Sadly it was not possible to feature you all.
To those that made the cut, congratulations and thank you
for allowing us to share your wonderful films with Cyprus. I
should also add that sadly it was not possible to include Turkish and Greek subtitles in all films, but we have offset this
by including many films in the main languages of the island.

boyunca, GIIFFte 30a yakn uzun metraj ve 35in zerinde

salayarak, yeni ortak giriimlere katalizr de olmak istiyor.
GIIFFi sosyal sorumluluk projeleriyle de desteklemekten
ok mutluyuz. Reel Skills projemiz film festivalleri
organizasyonuna ynelik workshoplar dzenlememizi
salad. Film Beyond Borders (Snrlartesi Film) projemiz
ngiltereden Kbrsa 25 katlmcnn adaya gelerek
Kbrsllarla birlikte ksa bir film yapmasn ayrca da Festivale
gnll olarak destek vermelerini salayacak. Kltrel,
sosyal ve sanatsal iletiimin engelleri yktna byk
inancmz var.
Bu kadar ksa sre iinde bu kadar mesafe alnm olmasnn
nedeni, GIIFF ekibinin kendisini Festivale adam olmas ve
de pozitif enerjisidir. Ve phesiz ki GIIFF, Creditwest

sayesinde hayat bulmutur. Kendilerine, festival ekibimize,

The island of Cyprus has an important history as a

meeting place for numerous ethnic groups from
different periods. Despite the wealth of the island, as
a result of the lack of a strong arts and culture policy
and the fact that arts is placed at a lower scale in the
countrys agenda, very few arts projects are able to
sustain themselves. However arts, especially film
sector are considered vital in the developed world
and it exposes the socio economic level of the country.
As film production requires budget and human
resources, film makers surely need to get support
from international organisations and statutory and
private sectors.

Festival I consider the festival to be an important
opportunity for the countrys cinema sector to achieve
good things, I have fully embraced the festival and I
am both excited and honoured to be a Cypriot. I want
to thank the Altnba family for their generosity and
for everything they have done for the festival. Today
the importance of Turkish cinema is starting to be
recognised and praised all over the world and I firmly
believe that with investment, new talent can be found
in Cyprus so I can stop feeling lonely as one of the few
Cypriots working in the industry and we can begin to

Opening and Closing Galas / Al ve Kapan Galalar
In its first year, Golden Island International Film

Festival (GIIFF) organized in partnership with
Creditwest Bank will hold its opening gala on the
evening of 6 November 2014 at Girne American
University Spectrum Hall. The event will host
over 750 guests for the Cyprus premiere
screening of the film Balk, a touching tale by
award-winning Turkish-Cypriot director Dervi
Zaim. Together with Dervi Zaim, stars of the
movie are expected to attend the Kyrenia
opening gala event.

GIIFF will present Honorary Awards to influential

artists in cinema and TV sectors. During the
first opening gala of GIIFF, Honorary Awards
will be presented to special guests, Director
Dervi Zaim, and actors Demet Akba and Erdal
zyaclar, for their remarkable contribution.
The closing gala and the awards ceremony will
be held on the 13th of November at Mehmet
Altnba Conference Hall in Nicosia Turkish
Lycee. GIIFF is awarding four prestigious awards:
Best Documentary, Best Short Fiction and two
Best Newcomer awards. Award winning films
will be rescreened at the closing gala.

Demet Akba
Akba also starred in the lead in the feature films Vizontele,
Vizontele Tuuba, Organize ler, Neredesin Firuze, O...
ocuklar, Eyyvah Eyvah, Eyyvah Eyvah 2 and Kurtulu
Son Durak, and she was awarded a Golden Orange with
Vizontele as well as receiving the Sadri Alk and Siyad
awards with Neredesin Firuze.
She presented the quiz shows Sper Aile and kizler Geliyor,
and also hosted the talk shows Piti ve Hi Bunlar Kendine Dert Etmeye Deer mi?. Her recent work for television
includes the series Sen Harikasn and stanbulun Altnlar
and the entertainment programme Benzemez Kimse Sana.
She received the Best Actress Award at Sadri Alk
Theatre and Cinema Awards with Hkmet Kadn in 2012,
and in 2014, she starred in the films Hkmet Kadn 2 and
Eyyvah Eyvah 3 and the TV series Sevdaluk.

After graduating from Istanbul University City
Conservatory, Department of Theatre, Demet Akba started
her acting career at Gnl lk Gazanfer zcan Tiyatrosu.
She worked in private theatre groups such as an Tiyatrosu,
Kent Oyuncular, Hadi aman Yedi Tepe Oyuncular,
Devekuu Kabare, Dormen Tiyatrosu, Bostanc Gsteri
Merkezi and Ortaoyuncular, as well as various television
programmes.
She was chosen TV Star of the Year in 1987 by Lifestyle
Journalists Association (Magazin Gazetecileri Dernei)
and was awarded a Golden Orange Prize for her part in Tersine Dnya at Antalya Film Festival in 1993, becoming the
second woman after Suna Pekuysal to receive the smail
Dmbll award in 1995. She then received the Golden
Butterfly Comedy Artist of the Year Award in 1996, 1997
and 1998 as well as the MGD Comedy Artist Award in
1996 and 1997. Demet Akba starred in the leading roles in
the TV series Bir Demet Tiyatro and lmsz Ak, as well
as starring in plays such as Otogargara, Sen Hi
Atebcei Grdn M?, Bana bir eyhler Oluyor and
Haybeden Gerekst Ak, all produced by BKM.

Erdal zyaclar
Erdal zyaclar was born in Bursa in 1948. After attending

Bursa High School for Boys, he went on to study at Istanbul
University, School of Law. The same year, he got into Istanbul
City Conservatory, Department of Theatre. After two years, he
quit his law education and started at the Conservatory. In his
second year, he became professional with Sydney Kingsleys
Detective Story, staged by Kent Oyuncular in the 1965-66
season. With companies such as Kent Oyuncular, Dormen
Tiyatrosu, and Dostlar Tiyatrosu as well as Istanbul Municipality
City Theatres, Erdal played in numerous established theatrical
and musical productions including Yer Demir Gk Bakr (Yaar
Kemal), Dmanlar (Maxim Gorki), Sait Of Sait (Aziz Nesin),
Carmen (Bizet), Zengin Mutfa (Vasf ngren), Yolcu (Nazm
Hikmet).
In 1966, he moved on to cinema with lm Tarlas, written by
Yaar Kemal and directed by Atf Ylmaz, and since then he has
starred in numerous renowned films with a wealth of
unforgettable character portrayals. These include: Balatl Arif,
Kozanolu, Kibar Feyzo, Talihli Amele (Atf Ylmaz), Sis (Faruk
Turgut), pler Kral (Zeki kten), Sultan (Kartal Tibet),
Zrt Aa (Nesli lgeen), Ylanlarn c, Beyolunun Arka
Yakas (erif Gren), Postac (Memduh n), Bir Krk Bebek
(Nisan Akman), Yarn Cumartesi (Bilge Olga) In addition to
theatre and cinema, zyaclar further established his success
with various TV projects and brought many unforgettable characters of Turkish television to life. The first TV series he starred in
was Hayatm Roman (5 episodes), a TRT production from 1979.

episode long Bizimkiler, of which 215 episodes aired between

Tango, Baklavac Kahraman in Yabanc Damat, St
Ramiz in Elveda Rumeli and Halit Karada in Karadalar.

Competition Awards
For its first edition, Golden Island International
Film Festival held a competition within the Cyprus
cinema strand. The categories for the competition
are Best Short Fiction and Best Documentary.
There will also be two further awards for Best
Newcomer. The prizes include 2000 EUR each
and will be presented to winners at the closing
awards ceremony at the festival in Cyprus.
The criteria and rules were kept broad, so that
Cypriot film makers had the space for creativity
and had the chance to showcase their films
even if they had been shown before. Any film
maker could have applied for these awards if they
live in Cyprus or if they are Cypriot and living
abroad. We wanted to encourage more film
making in Cyprus and with Cypriot film makers
living abroad.
For the Best Newcomer award the nominees
were chosen by the film makers themselves
and could be of any role from the film crew such
as actor, editor, director or producer etc. Two
juries will determine the winners.

Kaya and Filiz, a fisherman and his wife living in a village by a lake, strive to heal their little daughter Deniz, who is
unable to speak. When the doctors cannot provide much help, Filiz decides on an old folk remedy, hoping that her
daughter would speak if she can feed her a variety of fish believed to possess healing powers. However, the fish she
is looking for is now extinct in the nearby lake, leading her to search other lakes. Finally catching eight of the rare fish in
elsewhere, Filiz begins to feed them to her daughter. Discovering the fish at home, altogether different ideas pop into
Kayas mind, as he ponders whether he can make good money by breeding the fish in a fish farm. The quest to find
the money required to set up the farm drags Kaya into illegal pathways and the fate of the family in a totally different
direction...

Dervi Zaim studied Management and Cultural Studies
(MA) at Bosphorus University and University of Warwick,
respectively. Following his Yunus Nadi Novel Prize
awarded book Ares Harikalar Diyarnda (1994), he
directed his first film Tabutta Rvaata (Somersault in
Coffin) in 1997. This national and international award
winning debut was followed by other feature length films
Filler ve imen (Elephants and Grass, 2000), amur
(Mud, 2003), Cenneti Beklerken (Waiting for Heaven,
2006), Nokta (Dot, 2008), Glgeler ve Suretler (Shadows
and Faces, 2011) and Devir (2012) which similarly enjoyed
a succesful reception at various prestigious national and
international festivals as well as Paralel Yolculuklar (Parallel
Trips, 2003), a doc co-directed with Panicos Chrysanthou.
Zaim continues to teach cinema at various universities.

Every day trucks thunder through Barskoon village. They carry a deadly freight filled with cyanide, used for extracting
gold from the nearby Kumtor goldmine. In 1998 a truck full of cyanide crashed into the river that runs through the
village. Many villagers died and hundreds became ill. After seven years in which the Kyrgyz government does
nothing a handful of courageous women begin to fight for the rights of the victims. When a revolution topples the
government of President Bakiev in 2010, the women are at the forefront of the protests. After the first democratic
election, Erkingul, the leader of the village protesters, manages to secure a seat in parliament and continues to lead
the fight against the gold mine as a politician. Staying very close to the activists, this humorous film describes not
only the political commitment displayed by these women in their struggle for justice, but also how people manage to
survive in a Kyrgyz village.

Mirjam Leuze
Director | Writer
Born 1964 in Nrtingen. Leuze holds a Masters in Cultural
Anthropology and Theatre, Film and Television Studies
from the University of Cologne. During a year long
research scholarship in Kyrgyzstan she began
transforming medical systems after the breakdown of
the Soviet Union and also learning Kyrgyz, a language she
is now fluent in. Her work as a journalist is related to
socio-political and development issues. She has produced
short docs on the environmental and socio-economic
impact of goldmines in Northern Peru and in the US, also
on the Millennium Development Goals in Rwanda and
Burundi and on the impact of globalization following the
life cycle of a mobile phone. In 2010, she founded the
film production company TOPOS to independently
produce her first feature length doc, Flowers of Freedom
which she shot during her four years in Kyrgyzstan. The
film had its premiere at the 64. Berlinale. Besides her
own filmmaking she works as a facilitator in Participatory
Video, empowering people to make their own films about
their views of the world.

Ali lives with his mother Nigar in Istanbuls Tarlaba district; home to many Kurdish immigrants. When the ongoing
gentrification of the old city forces them to move for a second time, they end up in the soulless concrete desert of the
citys furthest outskirts. Nigar is convinced that her old neighbours have all moved back to their village in Eastern
Turkey. Every morning she packs her belongings and sets out to return to her village. She roams the city, in search of her
village and in search of the song that keeps returning in her dreams. All Ali can do is be kind to her; he buys her gifts,
feeds her sweets, takes her on motorcycle rides and tries to help his mother find that song. Meanwhile Ali discovers
that his girlfriend is pregnant. Torn between the two women in his life, Ali has to choose his own path.

Director
Born in Kars, Turkey. Graduated from Marmara University
with a thesis about the cinema of Tarkovsky. While he
was still a student, Minta worked in numerous short
films as 1st AD and DoP. His debut feature Song of My
Mother (2014) is a co-production between Turkey, France,
and Germany. It was supported by Turkish Ministry of
Culture and CNC Cinema du Monde.

This beautifully told and stylish road movie, follows Roma radio reporter Orhan Galjus, born in Kosovo, along with
filmmaker Bob Entrop through Germany, Poland and Kosovo. As they try to discover why the Sinti and Roma people
kept silent about the genocide committed on their people during World War II after nearly half a million of them were
murderded. Through wonderful images we as the audience experience their unique encounters with Roma communities
across Europe. We witness interviews with German Sinti that survived the horrors of Auschwitz. We see unknown
commemorative sites in Poland. As the story evolves, the inner drama of the protagonist Orhan develops. His engaging
personality makes him a compelling narrator, who is able to continue to captivate the viewer. Step by step, Orhan
finds that this part of history of the Sinti and Roma has become somewhat a hidden treasure. He discovers fears that
future generations may become alienated from their roots.

Producer, director Bob Entrop (1946). After graduating
the film department of the St. Joost Academy of Art in
Breda in 1972 he produced and directed more than 220
film titles. He was one of the founders of the first film
collective in the Netherlands: De Kritiese Filmers and
in 1975 the founder of the theatre group: Het Volksteater,
where he worked as a director but also as an actor. Since
1979 he is the owner of SOL FILMprodukties. The company
produces for several networks, docs, talk shows, feature
films and drama-series. Several productions received
awards at national and int. festivals. Well known

Hitlers Children is a film about the descendants of the most powerful figures in the Nazi regime, men and women who
were left a legacy that permanently associates them with one of the greatest crimes in history. Their family names
alone evoke horror: Himmler, Frank, Goering, Hoess. What is it like for them to have grown up with a name that
immediately raises images of murder and genocide? For more then sixty years, they have lived in the shadows, trying
to rebuild their lives without the constant reminders of what their fathers and grandfathers once did. Only now are
they willing to bare the scars of their awful legacy. Only now are they ready to tell their story. How can they protect
their families, even as they pass their name down to future generations? In Hitlers Children we not only hear their

Chanoch Zeevi is a director and producer of
documentary films. In fifteen years of filmmaking, Zeevi
has addressed issues of conflict, reconciliation, and the
social and political circumstances that define identity.
His films are intended to forge paths and build bridges
between opposing groups and cultures. Zeevi is founder
and owner of Maya Productions, an Israeli production
company that specializes in documentary films for local
and foreign audiences. Many of the companys projects

Champ of the Camp is the first feature-length documentary filmed in the controversial labour camps of the United
Arab Emirates. The film follows a Bollywood style singing and trivia competition that searches across more than 70
camps throughout the country to find and crown the champ of all camps. Narrated (and sung) entirely in the voices
of the labourers. The film displays intimate scenes of their daily routines and emotional reflections on their life as
labourers in Dubai. Brought in by the millions to fuel the construction requirements of a booming Arab economy, these
workers live eight men to a room in industrial-sized living facilities far removed from the glistening skyline of fantastical
towers they build and from the luxurious lifestyle of the rest of the city. Champ of the Camp presents both a tribute
and parody to Bollywood by presenting its most famous songs against the backdrop of a life of manual labour.

Mahmoud Kaabour is a multi award-winning director,
writer, and lecturer from Lebanon, based in the United
Arab Emirates. With the record-setting successes of
his work, he has emerged as the most distinguished documentary filmmaker in the region. His ground-breaking
film Teta, Alf Marra (Grandma, a Thousand Times)
winning seven major Audience awards and Best Film
awards in London, Mumbai, Mexico City, Qatar, Syria,
and China. Kaabour graduated with distinction from
the Mel Oppenheim School of Cinema in Montreal. His
first film Being Osama, the documentary on the lives and
times of six men sharing Bin Ladens first name in the
post 9/11 world, received four international awards.
Kaabour is the founder and managing director of Veritas Films, the UAEs leading production company for
non-fiction films. His commercial work includes directing
dozens of tailormade documentaries for the UAEs top governmental and corporate entities.

mother leaves him with full responsibility. Their plan is to try and make their way through to Lithuania, where some
farmers are well inclined towards tending for German children. Being on the run to find a new home, the two brothers
are attacked and have to go their separate ways to escape. An odyssey begins when Hans, driven by the search
for his brother, joins a group of children. Together they fight against starvation, weather and diseases in a foreign
country for survival.

All over todays world we can witness acts of civil disobedience against ruling powers. The protesters often consist
of a wide range of people. At times these alliances are able to bridge together conflicts in order to unite for a common
cause. One such alliance formed out of the most unlikely parties during the Turkish protests against the ruling AK
party and Prime Minister Erdogan in June 2013. For years fans of the three main football clubs in Istanbul (Beikta,
Fenerbahe and Galatasaray) have been known for their unconditional support of their teams and their mutual rivalry
that often resulted in extremely violent clashes against each other or the police, with countless injuries and even
deaths. Then something remarkable happened, during the demonstrations, fans of the competing football teams
united for a common cause for the first time. People notorious for their mutual hate stood side by side. Soon a name
for their alliance was found: Istanbul United.

Chris Leslie is a BAFTA Scotland award winning Doc
Filmmaker, Photographer and Visual Artist located in
Glasgow. He has a Masters in Doc Photography with a
focus on Hope, memories, loss and community telling
stories of regeneration, he continues that work today
with his multimedia project The Glasgow Renaissance. He documents social and healthcare issues for
NGOs and charities as well as TV and news, including
documenting the post earthquake Haiti for CNN. In 2014
he received two BAFTA Scotland awards Best Factual
and Best New Work for his first doc Finding Family.

Oggi is a Cambridge based, double BAFTA awardwinning freelance filmmaker and cinematographer. He
has a degree from the International Film School of Wales.

University, KRAFT Foods, Clinique Cosmetics, MTV and
awards from SFF, Sheffield Doc Fest, the Irish

in Busan IFF, and was awarded the Grand Prix in Dieppe, France, the Prize of the Best Fiction Film in Bogota,

Nurbek Egen
Director
Nurbek Egen was born in Kyrghyzstan in 1975. He
graduated from the Directors Department of the Moscow
State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in 2000. He
now lives in Moscow. In 1997, he made the short film A
Day Older which won a diploma in Russias St.Anne
Competition, a prize at the Tokyo International Film
Festival and a number of other awards. In 2001 he made
the short film Sanzhyra, which won 15 international prizes.
His first full-length feature film was The Wedding Chest
(2006), which was Kyrghyzstans entry for the Academy
Award for Best Foreign-Language Film in 2007, and won
many international prizes. His subsequent work includes
the feature documentary Manas Children (2010), Kalachi
(Rolls) (2011), and the feature films The Empty Home
(2012) and The Mine (2013).

September 12th, 1980, was a very dark day for the people of Turkey. The military coup of September 12th, extended its
effects to the present day. Seeds of darker days and cruelty were being thrown into society. The days full of separation
and sorrow were about to begin. Constituting nearly half of the society, the women were naturally affected. They were
the mothers, daughters, wives and relatives. They were ready to play their part in creating a better world, but they had
to pay for it. They learned to resist and to unite. They created the first political movement for women after September
12th. After 34 years every aspect of the September 12th regime was being questioned, argued and sentenced. In the
doc film The September Women, the camera is turned onto the women who have things to tell of those days. The film
is based on the interviews taken from 32 women who lived through this movement.

Director
Born on October 10th 1972 in stanbul. Altun graduated
from Kadky Kz Lisesi in 1989 and Mimar Sinan
University Faculty of Arts Cinema-TV Section on June
2001. She has worked together with Duygu Sarolu
and Professor Tevfik smailov during her film studies.
She attended courses from Ltfi Akad and Halit Refi.
She has taken part in creating more than 20 short films as
director, directors assistant, art director etc. She has
given lectures on art direction in Film Collective. She
has prepared and directed a TV program named Emin

In 1986 a cancerous wind blew towards Trabzon from Chernobyl. It was followed by a wind of Natashas a few years
later. Battered by these gales, Trabzon would never be the same again. Cemal (30) and his wife Ayse (25) live happily
in Trabzon. With the break-up of the Soviet Union, Russian women immigrated to Trabzon to work. Among them is
Olga, who falls in love with Cemal, when he rescues her from the hand of mobsters. Olga tells Cemal thar her great
grandfather immigrated fron the nearby town of Santa to Yalta. She shows him photo of her great grandfathers
house which happens to be close to Cemals own house.Astonished they fall in love. Ayse begins to suspect Cemal.
One day she goes to visit Arif Usta (70), Cemals so-called master and here she runs into Olga. Cemal is shocked to
see them together.

Born in Trabzon. In 1983 he graduated from RadioTelevision Department of Gazi University and worked in
Anadolu News Agency, Sabah and Milliyet for 25 years.
He established Medya Ton with his wife Nurdan
Tekeolu and made the documentary fakat, which
highlighted the fight of Eastern Blacksea women against
the wild nature. In 2013 he completed his first feature
film I Loved You So Much after 3 years. The film was
screened at several festivals and received awards. He
is a lecturer at Okan University.

When her family were killed in Dersim, 5 year old Emo survived the massacre by chance. A military officer who took
part in the operation took Emo from her home, and 75 years later she begins a journey back to her roots with her

also survived the massacre. Emos daughter experiences the whole process with her mother, meeting her relatives
for the first time. The film explores the opinions, feelings and excitement the mother and daughter feel before and
after their journey to Dersim, and the changes they go through during it.

Director
Born in 1968, She began to her architectural design
education in 1987. However she had to suspend her
education because of her political opinion and was kept
in jail until 2001. After her release she completed her
university education and attended a film making course
organized by Human Rights Foundation of Turkey. She
wrote a book with Kazm Gndoan, The Missing Girls
of Dersim-Terteleeneku.

Winner of the 2006 Oscar for Best Foreign Language
Film for Tsotsi, the director penned dialogue for Secret
Sharer in Mandarin, as well as Polish and English. Secret
Sharer is Peters first feature film as director. Peter
started writing screenplays in 1994 and has developed
many feature film projects, including Secret Sharer. Peter
has a Masters degree in Economics from Cambridge
University and an MBA from The European Institute for
Business Administration (INSEAD) Fontainebleau. Peter
set up his own production company with his wife, Premiere
Productions Ltd, and celebrate its 20th year in the film
business with their Academy Award winning film Tsotsi
Peter was also nominated for the Carl Foreman Award
for Most Promising Newcomer (Producer) at the 2006
BAFTA Awards.

Tchernakova has worked as a writer, director and producer
since 1993. Her films have participated in international

She left Russia in 1994 and since then taught at McGill
University, Montreal, Canada and University of Lincoln,
UK, and worked as an independent filmmaker in Victoria,
British Columbia (Canada). Now Anna shares her time
between Canada and England where she continues

Tamer Garip

Tamer Garip has written, directed and produced the film
Code Name Venus which premiered at Cannes Film
Festival and cinemas throughout Turkey and Cyprus in
2012. Tamer was born next to a cinema in Nicosia, Cyprus
and emigrated to England to live and study in 1976. He
graduated from Brighton University with a BA (Hons)
Business Studies degree and few years later studied at
Panico Film School in London UK. With the assistance
of BBC and Sky TV, Tamer set up the School of Creative
Technologies in London, teaching filmmaking techniques
to over 100 students. He was the Trustee of Cyprus
International University from 2006 until 2011. He is currently
the head of Communication and Innovation at Near East
University as well as being the co-founder of the
universitys Filmmaking Department with Assoc. Prof
Dr Gke Keeci.

As a teenager, Chris abruptly abandoned his
dream of becoming a fighter pilot in the US
Navy to join a colourful yet reclusive Sufi sect
led by the mysterious Turkish-Cypriot Sheikh
Nazim. He then harbours a new dream of
becoming an Islamic scholar. But the Sheikh
has other, maybe grander, plans for him. A
decade and half later, Chris, now known as
Alauddin, lives in Germany, happily married
to Fatima, the wife the Sheikh advised him to
marry when he was 17, and working as a cook
in the Sheikhs restaurant. But despite his
apparently problem-free lifestyle, Alauddin has
begun to question whether the destiny alluded
to by the Sheikh will ever materialize. He travels
to Cyprus, to the Shiekhs home and spiritual
headquarters, to find out.

In 2008, the author Panikos Neokleous

published his book IGNORED 1974. In this
book are the stories of 50 Greek Cypriot
soldiers who in 1974 were at the front. One
of the stories in the book was that of Yiannis
Maratheftis who was shot in his head in Lefka
village on the 21st of July 1974. One year later,
after the book was translated in Turkish, on
the 26th of July 2009, Fethi Akintzi called the
author and told him that he is the man
who shot Yiannis. A few days after Fethis call,
Panikos arranged the meeting of the two men.

International Short Film Festival Detmold (ISFF) will screen a large number of short films from around
the world in its 11th edition in 2015. Screening programme is accompanied by video installations,
concerts and workshops. The festival is organised by Kultur & Art Initiative, an intercultural and
intergenerational non-profit association. The Initiative works with young people in Detmold as well as
other countries via transnational projects in media production and education.
