No joke: Matarese
bringing comedy
back to Cherry Hill

An Earth Day ladybug

Professional stand-up comedian

and township native Joe Matarese
is main act at Comedy Night May 9
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun

MIKE MONOSTRA/The Sun

Julia Feldman, 5, chose a ladybug for her face paint design at last weeks Sustainable Cherry Hill
Earth Festival. All face paint designs were Earth Festival-themed. For more photos, please see page
17.

On May 9, stand-up comedian

Joe Matarese is returning home.
Matarese will perform at Cherry Hill Townships inaugural
Comedy Night on Saturday, May 9
at Croft Farm. The show will
begin at 7 p.m. with opening act
Paul Spratt. Matarese will take
the stage shortly after.
Matarese grew up in Cherry
Hill and graduated from Cherry
Hill East in 1985. While he hasnt
lived in Cherry Hill since 1995, he
still has a lot of family living in
town.
Matarese said he wasnt much
of a comic as a Cherry Hill East
student. He describes himself as
shy and quiet in school and
thinks many of his former classmates would be surprised to see
him doing comedy. However, he
added he hopes to see some of his
old peers at the May 9 show.

Hopefully,
some of my
high
school
alumni
and
even
those
who graduated in other
classes
will
come out, he
said.
Matarese
MATARESE
jumped into
stand-up comedy at the age of 19. For a number
of years, his performances involved being observational about
everyday issues and topics. He described his style as similar to
Jerry Seinfeld, saying it was a
style most comedians were using
at the time.
I was doing what I thought
you were supposed to do,
Matarese said. I thought you had
to do what everyone else was

Community members take lead

in fight against scleroderma
Delaware Valley Chapter of Scleroderma Foundation seeks volunteers
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
A little more than three years
ago, Cherry Hill resident Bill
Cowan was taking part in a
friendly trivia contest with his coworkers at Merrill Lynch in Mt.
Laurel. The contest was a
fundraiser, where the winning
team would receive $3,500 to donate toward a nonprofit.
Our team won the trivia contest all because one of the partners knew a lot about music,
Cowan said.
After winning, Cowan convinced his team to donate the
money to the Delaware Valley
Chapter of the Scleroderma
Foundation. Cowan had participated in events with his brother
Bruce in North Jersey after
Bruces wife died from scleroderma in 2000.
The group used the money to
become a sponsor at the foundations Philadelphia walk. Cowan
attended the walk and has been
an active member of the foundation ever since.
The Delaware Valley Chapter
of the Scleroderma Foundation is
preparing to kick off its 2015 walk
schedule. The first walk the chapter hosts will be in Ventnor City
on May 2. There will also be
walks at Allaire State Park in
Howell on June 6, York Pa. on
Aug. 8 and Philadelphia on Oct. 4.
Cowan has known about scleroderma for many years and supported the cause. However, he didnt become an active volunteer
until the 2011 walk. The chapters
headquarters are located on
Kings Highway in Cherry Hill,
very close to Cowans home.
For many years, I knew of the
Scleroderma Foundation and
knew of the disease, he said. I
realized I could do more, right
here in my own backyard.
Scleroderma is an autoimmune disease where a persons
organs become hardened. While
the disease is known to harden a

persons skin visibly, it can also

affect a persons internal organs,
such as the heart or lungs.
The biggest challenge for the
foundation community has been
raising awareness in the medical
community. Cowan said many
doctors struggle to recognize scleroderma immediately.
Largely, the medical community doesnt recognize it at first,
he said. The typical story from
almost every case is the family or
patient struggled for four or five
years before the disease is identi-

fied.
The Delaware Valley Chapter
of the Scleroderma Foundation
was founded in 1988 and serves
eastern Pennsylvania, southern
and central New Jersey and
Delaware. Though the organization covers a large area, its community is dedicated and tightknit.

Enough regulation already!

We should promote innovation, not curb it

Dan McDonough Jr.

ix years ago, in 2009, a man had

a vision of changing the way a
long-standing industry operated. He felt the way the industry was
run wasnt the most efficient, wasnt
the most effective, hadnt adapted with
the times and didnt provide consumers with the best experience at the
best price.
Today, that mans company, Uber, is
well known and is in cities across the
country.
The company uses the person-to-person model to offer taxi-like services to
people through a mobile app. Users
download the app, select a car in their
area they want to use for the ride and
pay for the fare. The fare is listed based
on the trips length, and no cash is
needed while taking the trip.
Uber is catching on like wildfire
from users, who enjoy its accessibility selecting a ride with a few taps on
the phone instead of calling a taxi
company and waiting long times for

the drivers arrival and also its

cheaper price.
Uber also provides jobs to drivers
who are looking to earn extra money.
But this could all come crashing to a
halt, Uber says, if a New Jersey bill is
passed that would put onerous regulations on the company.
The legislation would require ridehailing companies such as Uber to display a Motor Vehicle Commission
marker when drivers are searching for
fares and would require background
checks for drivers, safety inspections
for vehicles and higher insurance regulations.
An Uber spokesman said the company already provides more insurance

than taxi companies do, and said if the

bill is passed, the company might be
forced out of New Jersey, resulting in
the loss of more than 5,000 jobs.
A similar bill in Kansas was struck
down by Gov. Sam Brownbacks veto,
and we couldnt agree more with his
reasoning:
Kansas should be known as a state
that embraces economic growth and
innovation. The jobs created by this
new industry can bring opportunity to
many Kansas families. An open and
free marketplace often results in higher quality products at a more affordable price.
New Jersey, similarly, should be a
state that embraces economic growth
and innovation. Uber found a way to
compete in the transportation market.
Good for them. They should be praised
for that, not overregulated to the point
of extinction.
If taxi companies cant compete, too
bad. Thats called business.

Camden County Bridge Loans Help

Disabled Children
By Freeholder Deputy Director Edward McDonnell

There is no
way a Mom and
Dad or a family
can ever prepare for a childs
catastrophic illness or severe
disability. In addition to the
devastating
emotional toll
on parents and
siblings, the economic impact in medical bills and
other costs can bring the
family to its financial knees.
To help families deal with
the financial consequences
of life-altering illness or disability. The Camden County
Board of Freeholders has established a ground breaking
program to help parents access the funds they need for
their children, without destroying the familys financial future.
Heres how it works. We
discovered last year that the
State of New Jersey has a
very substantial fund called
The Catastrophic Illness in
Children Relief Fund
(CICRF). Financed by New
Jersey businesses, the fund
was created to help middle
class families deal with the
costs associated with caring
for seriously ill or disabled
children.
For qualified applicants,
the fund will often pay the
entire cost of such things as
modifications to a bathroom
in the home, so that the doorway is wide enough, and the
sink low enough to accommodate a wheelchair. The
fund can also pay to add a
ramp or a chair lift in a
home, or to purchase or modify a van that can be used to
transport a child in a wheelchair.
The only problem is that a
family can only access
CICRF money as a reim-

bursement. In
their words, the
family must first
pay out of its
own pocket for
the home or van
modifications, or
other costs, and
then present the
receipts, before
the
CICRF
money will pay
for the entire cost of the project. For many middle class
families, that requirement is
a deal breaker; they just
dont have enough cash to
make the original purchase
or down payment.
To provide relief for families facing this dilemma, the
Camden County Freeholder
Board has become the first
in the state to offer bridge
loans that families can use
to make the initial purchase
or down payment on equipment and services, while
they await reimbursement.
Bridge loans of up to $5,000
are available from the
county, and the county is
later repaid by CICRF.
If a Camden County Catastrophic Illness in Children
Bridge Loan can help you
care for your child, and enhance your familys quality
of life, I hope you will call
the Camden County improvement Authority for
more information. (856)-7512242

SCLERODERMA
Continued from page 5
er this year. Her daughter Lauren
is a Cherry Hill resident who was
diagnosed with scleroderma in
January at the age of 27.
Shortly after her diagnosis, I
spent hours and days and weeks
researching, Lucente said. She
got herself hooked into a couple
of online support groups and
began seeing a lot of postings for
events.
Lucente had a friend who died
from scleroderma a number of
years ago, but never really
learned a lot about the disease
until this year. She attended a
couple of educational events with
Lauren and is now becoming actively involved with the organization.
Its sort of like a group of people united in a war, she said.
This is a war against a disease
that theres still not a whole lot
known about.
Formerly an attorney, Lucente
is now retired and is dedicating
much of her free time to the foundation.
This is where my passion now
lies, she said.
The foundation is looking to
get as many volunteers involved
as possible, even those whom the
disease has not directly impacted.
Fee Sepahi, executive director
for the Delaware Valley Chapter
of the Scleroderma Foundation,
said the organization is trying to
reach out to all areas of the community to find more volunteers.
To help reach out to the public,
the organization hosts events
across its region, including
walks, runs and other fundraising endeavors.

We added a 5K run in Hershey

last year called Race for Linda,
Sepahi said. I would love to put
on more events if we grow the
volunteer base.
Cowan said the organization is
looking to get more general public members involved on the
board.
We want people who are looking to join a board and join a nonprofit because of their experience, Cowan said. It would be
one of the things were really trying to do to make our group more
effective.
The public is encouraged to get
involved with the Scleroderma
Foundation, whether it be
through financial contributions
or volunteering.
If you have hands and motivation to help us out, we could always use you at the walks, Sepahi said. Whatever is we need, we

can certainly use (volunteer)

services.
Cowan invites members of the
public to attend one of the foundations walks, even if the disease
does not directly impact them.
When you go to the walks,
theyre fundraisers, but they are
also spirited events, he said.
You meet people and you get to
build rapport and bonds with the
families.

doing, and I found out you had to
be your own artist.
A number of years later, he
met a fellow stand-up comic
named Juston McKinney, whom
Matarese credits with helping
him find his style.
He just moved to New York,
Matarese said. He was coming
from Maine and he quit being a
police officer to become a comedian. He had a lot of material about
being a dad and being a cop. He
started getting all of this attention as soon as he got to New
York.
Matarese used a similar approach, talking about his life experiences and molding them into
a comedy show. Immediately, he

began getting more attention, and

the number of shows and career
opportunities began to multiply.
In the last decade, Matarese
has appeared on television and
radio shows such as Chelsea
Lately, The Late Show with
David Letterman, The Late
Late Show with Craig Ferguson,
The Late Late Show with Craig
Kilborn, his own half-hour
Comedy Central Presents special and The Howard Stern
Show. He also has a weekly podcast called Fixing Joe and is a
regular guest on fellow comedian
Artie Langes podcast. This is on
top of the many stand-up shows
he performs in the New York and
Philadelphia areas.
Lately, Matareses shows focus
on his family. In 2005, he married
his wife, Stephanie Cosentino.
The couple has two children, 7year-old Luke and 3-year-old

Willa.
It's very overwhelming when
you have your first kid,
Matarese said. My therapy is always to talk about it on stage with
strangers.
The Matarese family was the
subject of one of the biggest highlights of Matareses career. In
2014, he appeared on the ninth
season of the television show
Americas Got Talent and performed his act in front of judges
Howard Stern, Heidi Klum,
Melanie Brown and Howie Mandel. Matarese got a standing ovation following the act and advanced to the second round.
What made the moment special
was Matareses wife and kids
were present at the show. It was
the first time Matareses kids had
ever seen him perform.
When Howard Stern said
amazing things, you can tell I seriously almost cried, Matarese
said. It was emotional. My kids
were in my arms when I was on
stage. It was seriously my best career moment.
Matarese said he rarely gets to
come back to Cherry Hill and perform because of the lack of venues in the area. That makes the
May 9 performance at Croft Farm
extra special.
There aren't many places to
perform near Cherry Hill, he
said. I would love for them to
happen more in South Jersey.
Tickets for Comedy Night are
$25 in advance and $30 at the door.
The ticket price includes light
food from Kaminskis, including
sliders, chicken kabobs, bruschetta, grilled veggies and penne
vodka and two alcoholic drinks.
To purchase tickets, visit room
