ABSTRACT

THE PROMOTION OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE USAGE OF SOPHOMORE AB ENGLISH LANGUAGE


STUDENTS OF PANGASINAN STATE UNIVERSITY LINGAYEN CAMPUS:
AN ASSESSMENT

English is the language of power and progress. In the Philippines, it is highly valued not only
because it is functional and practical, but more importantly, because it is an affordable item, a skills, that
can be used to increase ones position, respectability and marketability. In most cases, the better ones
ability to understand and use English the better ones chances of career advancement.
Language they say, it is the key to understanding other. It can be made powerful vehicle for
conveying our feelings and emotions for expressing ones hopes, illusions, fears and wisdom. The skillful
speaker or writer can polish it to the clarity of five crystal and use it to mirror his thoughts and to nourish his
mind as stated by Randolp Quirk (3:2002)
The English Language is more likely to be the most competitive weapon for the past changing
world. As it was properly known as the International Language, it would not be misunderstood that only
those competitive and world leading state and countries should be fluent in this language. Filipinos, young
and old, should not be left out by being illiterate with this subject. English now is the most common
language which is used to be part of this vast changing technology.

There is a need to study the English Language in school in order for the students to be globally
competitive and to be prepared in their future job. Therefore, for them to be able to speak English fluently
they must use English as their medium of communication inside and outside the school campus.
The process, the students must go through in developing English Language Proficiency is similar
to the process of young children, becoming fluent in a first language. They listen to and take it a great deal
of speed begins to emerge. They make predictable grammatical errors in which eventually corrected
through exposure and practice.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The descriptive method of research is use in this study. The researcher will use it because it helps
to present and elaborate facts with adequate and accurate interpretation of findings. It describes with
emphasis what actually exists. For instance, the current practices and situations. Since this study is
focused on the promotion of English Language usage in Pangasinan State University, the descriptive
method is the most suitable to use.

RESPONDENTS

The respondents of the study are the sophomore AB English Language students of Pangasinan State
University Lingayen Campus, Academic Year 2015-2016.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM


The study aims to assess the promotion of English Language usage in Pangasinan State
University Lingayen Campus. It also intends to encourage the students to speak English Language and to
know the significance of it.
Specially, it seeks to answer the following sub-problem:
1. What is the profile of the student-respondents in terms of:

age;

gender;
1.3
hobbies;
1.4
course;
1.5
dialect usually used at home?
2. How does the school promote English Language usage to the students in terms of:

course syllabus;
2.2
class interaction;
2.3
social interaction?
3. What are the significance of promoting English Language usage to the students of Pangasinan
State University Lingayen Campus in terms of:
3.1
listening skills;
3.2
speaking skills;
3.3
writing skills;
3.4
reading skills?
4. What are the ways to improve English communication skills?

DATA GATHERING INSTRUMENT


1. A questionnaire will be used by the researchers to be distributed to III students respondents of
whom are students of Pangasinan State University Lingayen Campus. The questionnaire is made
up of four parts; Part I is focus on the profile of the student respondents. Part II presents how the

school promote English Language to the students of Pangasinan State University. Part III contains
the significance of English Language. Part IV contains the ways to improve communication skills
in English.
2. Interview, the researchers will be use interview to follow up and verify some doubtful answer in
the survey questionnaire.
