Introduction
English is a borrowed language for Rwandans. Yet, it is considered our
primary business language. This presents a challenge for people in the
workplace. Communicating is not merely a matter of sending messages. It is
also about being able to use a borrowed language proficiently, whether one
is writing or speaking. Grammar correctness ensures clarity, facilitates
understanding, communicates competence, and enhances the companys
and the employees professional images. It can also improve your customer
service because you are able to clearly and effectively communicate with
clients, internal parties, and the public. The Institute of Capacity Building, Mt.
Kenya University offers various short courses, among them English
proficiency course.
Setting
This course is designed to enhance staff competence in the usage of English
as a medium of communication at the work place bearing in mind that a lot
of official and routine work and documentation in the work place is in the
English language.
The English proficiency short course offered at the Institute of Capacity
Building comprises of the following topics
The proficiency training will be offered in three modules covering the
following areas:
Level 1

Workplace communication
-asking and answering simple questions in English
-etiquette
-personal information (bio data)
-nomenclature
-inter personal communication
-levels of language use
-choosing language in everyday communication
Fluency enhancement
-speech techniques
-proper pronunciation

-sentence construction in speech performance


-phone etiquette
Level 2

English for daily use


-giving directions
-communication at work place
-naming of items at place of work
-metacommunication (communication about communication)
-characteristics of communication
-making introductions
-making requests
-making apologies
English functional skills
-sales and public relation skills
-persuasive request letter writing skills
-Social- business correspondence
-work place document preparation
-report writing
-proposal writing

Level 3

Business English
-reading and proofreading
-correctness of expression and content
-editing for professional results
-informational and analytical reports
-tailoring memos for special purposes
-situation and persuasion
-purpose and persuasion

Speech therapy
-factors of voice quality
-saying words correctly and distinctly
-enunciation
-pronunciation therapy
-guides to effective delivery
-communication management-mnemonics and logical order
-organizational principles applied to a speech

Design and Development Methodology

The course is divided into three modules where each module takes a total
of 30 contact hours. A proficiency certificate is issued upon successful
completion of the short course
Participating individuals are exposed to rigorous and well tailored tasks to
ensure that at the completion of the short course the client has gained the
requisite English proficiency skills that helps the individual communicate
better in the English Language.
The skills acquired after the short course are also designed to help those
wishing to become global citizens to acquire important integration skills.
The institute exposes the clients taking the English proficiency course to
audio and visual teaching aids for ease of acquiring the enhanced
fluency at an accelerated rate. Proper pronunciation is emphasized in the
enhancement course to help the client attain confidence while interacting
with people of all walks of life.
English trainers at the Institute have a wide experience teaching English as a
second language and quality of course material is guaranteed.
The training is offered at Mt. Kenya University plaza, Avenue de la Paux in
Kigali. Arrangements can also be made to train at the convenience of the
client work place on request.
The Institute of Capacity Building would be happy to partner with your
