ADAPTABILITY

Adaptability: Service-Learning Reflection Modules & Rubric

Adaptability Module Summary
Adaptability is an individual process through which students effectively engage with new
learning contexts. The process is fluid and requires ongoing effort to expand ones personal
frame of reference. A frame of reference is a set of collective assumptions that allows one to
make meaning of personal experiences (Mesirow, 1997). They are the mental models used daily
through which one understands the world and the people in it. Adaptability is the result of a
perspective change developed through reflection (Mesirow, 1978). Students must actively
process their experiences in order to become more adaptable.
Kiely (2005) examined personal growth and transformation through the experience of
service-learning. Through instances of cognitive dissonance, challenges to ones frame of
reference brought about by new experience, students participating in service-learning discover
new things about themselves and others. Cognitive dissonance is an opportunity for students to
reflect upon their service-learning and connect their frames of reference with the lived realities of
others (Kiely, 2005). Adaptability is an extension of this learning, adjusting ones personal
approach to act with greater empathy, respect, and effectiveness. Ultimately, these traits increase
the self-efficacy of the service-learning participant to adapt to new situations.
To promote adaptability within the service-learning setting, students will be challenged to:
Embrace cognitive dissonance
Reflect upon their assumptions (frames of reference) and experiences (theirs and others)
Connect their frames of reference with the lived realities of others
Build self efficacy for operating in new situations

PRE-SERVICE ADAPTABILITY MODULE SUMMARY

Module Overview:
Pre-service reflection provides an opportunity for you to take a moment to think about why you
chose your service-learning site. Once you immerse yourself in the experience, your time will be
spent adapting to the new environment, the people you work with, and the impact you have on
the community. This is a chance for you to collect your initial thoughts, feelings, and
expectations prior to your service-learning experience. Through your reflection this semester,
you will undergo growth before, during, and after your service-learning experience. As you
prepare your pre-service reflection, think about what you hope it will teach you about yourself
and others.
During this reflection exercise, you will:
Foundational Knowledge
o Students will be able to articulate reasons for choosing their site
o Students will state their understanding of adaptability
Application
o Students will be able to identify their assumptions regarding their sites
Integration/Human Dimension
o Students will be able to describe the knowledge, skills, and abilities they bring to
their sites
Learning How to Learn
o Students will be able to discern their initials thoughts and expectations prior to
their service-learning experience

MID-SERVICE ADAPTABILITY MODULE SUMMARY

21

Mid-Service Reflection Module

Module Overview:
Mid-Service reflection provides an opportunity for you to pause during your servicelearning experience and make meaning of the service you are engaging in. While you are
immersed in this experience be sure to attend to the various ways in which you adapt and
grow. This reflection is a chance for you to engage in critical thought about how this
experience has developed your own personal adaptability in a variety of contexts.

Adaptability:
Is the process through which students effectively engage with new learning contexts.
Students are challenged to:
Embrace cognitive dissonance
Reflect upon their assumptions (frames of reference) and experiences (theirs and others)
Connect their frames of reference with the lived realities of others
Build self-efficacy for operating in new situations

During this reflection exercise, you will:

Foundational Knowledge
o Students will be able to explore the dissonance around their initial perceptions of
the experience and their lived reality.
Application
o Students will reflect on experiences and relate them to course readings
Integration/Human Dimension/Caring
o Students will analyze their frames of reference in conjunction with the lived
realities of others
Learning How to Learn
o Students will be able to identify personal areas in which they are able to further
develop and build their personal adaptability
o Students will begin to explore their own perceived self-efficacy

MID-SERVICE ADAPTABILITY DISCUSSION REFLECTION

Discussion Instructions
For this discussion, you will begin by responding to the following questions, which are
structured in two parts. Once you have posted your response, you can start engaging with
your peers by reading and responding to at least two posts. To ensure everyone has the
opportunity to engage, post your response by Wednesday and respond to two of your
peers post by Saturday. Please reference the grading rubric attached below to guide
your efforts.

Part One
How is this experience different than you thought it would be?
Does what you are experiencing at your site that connects what we are discussing in
class?
How has this experience shaped your idea of community?

Part Two
In what ways do your values coincide with your experience?
What are areas you would like to grow in?
How will you find opportunities at your site to support this growth?
What does self-efficacy look like to you? How has your experience shaped that?

POST-SERVICE ADAPTABILITY MODULE SUMMARY

43

Post-Service Reflection Module

Adaptability:
Is the process through which students effectively engage with new learning contexts.
Students are challenged to:
Embrace cognitive dissonance
Reflect upon assumptions (frames of reference) & experiences (theirs and others)
Connect ways of thinking (frames of reference) with the lived realities of others
Build self-efficacy for operating in new situations

Module Overview:
Post-service reflection provides the opportunity for you to reflect upon your personal
adaptability. During the reflection process, your experiences have led you to develop a
deeper understanding and appreciation of others. Utilizing empathy and increased
personal efficacy, you are able to be adaptable in a variety of contexts. This reflection
provides an opportunity for you to connect your own perceived self-efficacy and personal
adaptability with your personal and professional goals.

During this reflection exercise, you will:

Foundational Knowledge
Students will be able to define self-efficacy in their own words
Application
Insights are drawn making connections between course content and practiced adaptability skills.
Students will describe the process of moving through cognitive dissonance to adaptable action
Integration/Human Dimension
Students will construct frames of reference inclusive of the needs of others.
Students will be able to articulate how their personal adaptability affects the community and
society at large
Caring
Students will be able to make meaning of decision in choosing their particular site.
Learning How to Learn
Students will evaluate their ability to adapt to the needs of others.

POST-SERVICE ADAPTABILITY DISCUSSION REFLECTION

45

Discussion Instructions
For this discussion, you will begin by responding to the following questions, which are
structured in two parts. Once you have posted your response, you can start engaging with
your peers by reading and responding to at least two posts. To ensure everyone has the
opportunity to effectively engage, post your response by Wednesday and respond to
two of your peers post by Saturday. Please reference the grading rubric attached
below to guide your efforts.

Part One
What has been your role in perpetuating social justice?
How have your personal values changed as a result of your practiced adaptability skills?
Describe how your personal adaptability affects the community and society at large.
What barriers have you faced? How do you overcome these barriers?

Part Two
What have you learned about what it means to be adaptable from this experience that you
simply could not learn from reading a textbook or sitting in class?
Describe what insights you have drawn from the connections made in relation to
adaptability. How do those connections inform your understanding of course material and
class discussions in relation to adaptability?
Describe the different ways you have shown the ability to adapt to the needs of others.
What have you done differently? How has this experience been challenging? How has
this experience been rewarding?

Multimedia Project Instructions

For this multimedia project, use any of the tools listed below to address the questions
below. You have the choice to focus on all the questions or pick a minimum of three to
address. Be creative with this approach and please include a written explanation that
describes the meaning you intend to convey through your symbolism.

There are many multimedia tools you may use to complete this project, such as:
Animoto
Instagram
Painting
Poem
Powerpoint
Prezi
Powtoon
Song
Video (posted on YouTube)
