Whats in a Name?
Sustainable, Organic & Biodynamic Defined
Its a question that can drive even longtime wine and wine-trade
insiders crazy: what really is the difference between the terms
sustainable, organic and biodynamic? And, do the distinctions matter
at all? Whats really being asked, in my opinion, is how much is
marketing magic and how much is winegrowing truth; how much is
it everyone drinking from the same grapeaid versus a reflection of the
realities of commercial wine production? Its a mixture of all of the
above, of course! And given that there any plenty of organic or
biodynamic producers who dont reveal this as part of their marketing
because its easier not to, letting the focus be on the wines themselves,
its a very complicated situation. But what in wine isnt?
Everyone, perhaps, by now understands what organic means in
terms of not using chemicals or ecologically disruptive practices, but
in the context of wine, it gets a lot trickier especially for small
wineries, which is why there are way more wines labeled made with
organic grapes than straight up organic wines. It is considerably
easier to get certification showing that the organic-ness of the
grapes, is preserved through the winemaking, than to get a winery or
wine certified as wholly organic. It is not impossible, but it is costly,
takes multiple years, and leaves little room for error in the cellar.
Among a number of technical issues, there is an absolute limit on
sulfite usage, which knocks out most commercial wines because of
the larger batch process in which they are produced, and the
necessity to have preservation of the wines, once bottled. Because of
all of the regulations and paperwork, some people practice these
ideas without preaching them, intentionally not denoting what
theyve done.
Biodynamic focuses on the land and resulting wines one better.
Based on the writings of Rudolf Steiner, proponents of what is an
agricultural philosophy argue for integrative methods akin to organic
practices but also place those strategies within a system of nature-
Josh Stein has been in the Napa wine business for more than a dozen years, and, in addition
to being owner/winemaker of the Stein Family Wine Group, which produces a nationally and
internationally distributed portfolio of wine brands and donates a percentage of its sales, he
regularly consults for wineries and organizations throughout the North Bay and Coast via
their subsidiaries, Discrete Wine Support Services and Napa Valley Writing Services.

ANDRETTI WINERY
The Perfect Private Party Tasting Experience in Napa Valley!
BY MONICA L. DASHWOOD
22
Are you looking to do something fun? Want to share your love of wine with your friends?
Look no further. Andretti Winery, located in the heart of Napa Valley, offers exquisite private
party tastings for your drinking pleasure. Andretti Winery promises you an experience
immersed in old world European charm, a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere to groups,
large and small. Nestled amongst 42 acres of Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and
Sauvignon Blanc vineyards, Andretti provides gracious hospitality, the Italian way, complete
with stunning views of their Tuscan villa, towering cypress trees and a stone-tiled piazza.
Private party tastings are conducted in the beautiful Tuscan House on property,
overlooking the vineyards, and tastings are customized to fit your schedule and satisfy your
palate. Groups up to 20 will savor a flight of red and white varietals from the tasting menu.
You can also request a tour, taking you through Andrettis estate vineyards, expansive barrel
room and property, all while listening to beautiful Italian music as you stroll the courtyard
and Villa. Cheese and wine pairings are also offered upon request. (Private group tastings are
by appointment only.)
The staff works closely with you to customize the perfect tasting, choosing from an
Impressive portfolio representing more than 10 varietal wines, including the classic Italian
Napa Valley Sangiovese, (their Flagship wine) Napa Valley Pinot Grigio, the delicious Barbera,
and the Super Tuscan, which is 50% Sangiovese and 50% Cab.
You will feel like you are in Tuscany as you taste Andretti wines, and enjoy the history and
ambiance of this beautiful place. A perfect setting for picnics, tours and special events, with
an outdoor event capacity of up to 300 seated guests.
Behind the creation of the Andretti Winery is a great story, about a great friendship that is
worth sharing with your guests at party time. Established in 1996, the Andretti Winery has
been committed to the same high standard of excellence that won founder Mario Andretti his
driving championships. Andretti Winery was modeled after a small Italian village where
Andretti, the legendary race car driver grew up as a boy. In 1994, Mario retired and turned
his attention to making wine in Napa Valley.
He assembled the best team of experts, with Co-Founder Joe Antonini, Former Chairman
and CEO of K-Mart Corporation, and Winemaker Bob Pepi. Together theyve been making
world class wines ever since.
Come get a taste for yourself of the grand Italian lifestyle that is Andretti! For an
appointment, contact Lori Reed at (707) 259-6777, ext. 222.

Carneros legend, Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards will premiere their stunning new facility
this month. Founded in 1986, the winery was designed to be a vibrant blend of the Ferrer
familys cherished Catalan culture and their new California home. The makeover offers a more
updated luxurious space that will expand tasting options for visitors, and will further accentuate
the glorious views of San Pablo Bay from their terrace. Visitors will also be able to see the Ferrer
collection of glassware in a beautiful new display.
24
The history of Gloria Ferrer speaks volumes as to their success in the sparkling business.
Back in the early 1980s there were only a handful of wine growers planting Pinot Noir in
Carneros. And yet, the family knew the key to a world-class mthode champenoise would be
Pinot Noir so they traveled to the Champagne district in France where they managed to acquire
Pinot Noir and Chardonnay clones. Gloria Ferrer is not only the first sparkling wine house in
Carneros, but also the first to plant Champagne clones.
Thirty five years later, with 335 acres under the vine, the estate vineyards at Gloria Ferrer
produce some of the finest Pinot and Chardonnay.

Take in the stunning new tasting room, relish in a tour and tasting with lunch,
challenge your friends to an outdoor game, or simply relax on the patio with a glass
of wine while gazing at the estate buffalo for an enhanced winery experience at Roth
Estate.
Located on Chalk Hill Road in Healdsburg, Roth Estate is a family-owned winery
committed to crafting exceptional quality wines grown in the best vineyards of the
Alexander Valley AVA and Sonoma Coast AVA. The estate vineyards in the Alexander
Valley are gentle, rolling hills with volcanic-based soils that create bold, full-flavored
wines of the classic Bordeaux varietals. With the addition of its cool-climate Sonoma
Coast vineyard sites that produce rich Chardonnays and elegant Pinot Noirs, the
winery offers a variety for both Bordeaux and Burgundian enthusiasts. These
authentic wines are approachable and offer great value while consistently receiving
high acclaims from top publications and competitions. In fact, the 2010 Sonoma
Coast Pinot Noir won the prestigious Pigs and Pinot Competition in 2013.
Whats even more enticing is its newly constructed tasting room. The new tasting
room is just minutes from Healdsburg or Santa Rosa and is open daily from 10 a.m.
to 4 p.m. The blend of natural woods, floor-to-ceiling windows and contemporary
dcor of the interior space provides a feeling of tradition that embraces modernity
much like the wines themselves. This natural and modern blend extends to the large
exterior space, where simple yet sophisticated dcor meets the majestic golden
California rolling hills, on top of which roaming buffalo can be seen. Yes, there are
buffalo on the estate, but dont worry, they are fenced in. In June, we are excited to
announce the opening of the Roth wine cave which is made up of 10,000 feet of
caves, and exclusive rooms where guests will be able to tour, taste and more.
An additional draw that truly adds to the tasting experience is the outdoor games.
Enjoy wine and playing oversized Jenga or corn hole (bean bag toss). Or, if youre a
better bystander than player, relax at one of the outdoor teak tables while taking in
the scenery and excitement with your wine.
There are also a variety of tasting options including winery tours, aromas seminars

SPRINGTIME BONANZA
30
Spring is here and Napas 2015 growing season has officially begun! To kick off the
season and celebrate the vineyards awakening from their winter slumber, one of Napas
most innovative and admired boutique wineries is hosting an event not to be missed.
Mark your calendar for the 9th annual Springtime Bonanza hosted by Judds Hill Winery
and MicroCrush! The party will take place at their Silverado Trail winery on Sunday,
May 17th from 12 to 2:30 p.m.
The Springtime Bonanza is a benefit for the Napa Valley Youth Symphony, and if
youve never attended a party at Judds Hill, we suggest you make plans to be there and
experience their relaxed and friendly hospitality first hand. As with any Judds Hill party,
its a good idea to come ready to eat. Although it is a benefit for the Napa Valley Youth
Symphony, and musicians from the symphony will provide entertainment throughout,
the real star of the show is the food. As in years past, a world-class barbecue lunch will
be prepared and served. Dont expect dainty finger-foods and miserly appetizers here.
The good people of Judds Hill know how to feed their fans. Tri-tip and ribs, beans and
cole slaw are all on the menu. During the event, new release wines such as the Judds
Hill 2014 Ros and 2014 Sauvignon Blanc will also make their public debut. And no
barbecue at Judds Hill would be complete without sampling their most popular 2012
Zinfandel, otherwise known as Burkes Blazing BBQ Zin. This wine is crafted every year
with the express purpose of being the perfect wine to pair with the food served at their
Bonanza. Tickets are $55 per person, but for Judds Hill Wine Club members entry is
absolutely free. Youll enjoy great wine, food, music and people, all for a good cause.
What could be better on a beautiful spring day?
If you happen to miss the party, you should call the winery and make an
appointment to visit their tasting room, open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Their smalllot, hand-crafted wines are affordably priced and produced in a food-friendly style,
making them a popular choice among Napa Valley restaurants. With less than 3,000
cases produced annually, you are not likely to find these wines outside of Napa.
In addition to throwing great parties, the folks at Judds Hill are big fans of wine
education. Guests who attend one of their daily Wine and Food in Balance seminars
build wine and food pairing skills for life. These casual and fun seminars, led by a

BERINGER WINERY
a Napa Valley Legacy 139 Years of History,
Tradition and Fine Winemaking
BY BONNIE ZIMMERMANN
E S TD
18 76
34
The human spirit has the wonderful power to turn mere objects into an obsession,
to transform everyday tasks into art. Beringer has been expressing that passion for
almost fourteen decades. It shows in every aspect of the business and is a must-see
when visiting the Napa Valley.
In 1868, two young brothers Jacob and Frederick Beringer wanted to seek their
fortunes in the new world, America. They sailed from their home in Mainz, Germany
and arrived in New York. However, after hearing that the rocky hillside soil and fertile
valley floor resembled that of vineyards back home in Germany, they made their way
to the Napa Valley. Jacob and his brother Frederick purchased 215 acres of land in
1875, and founded one of the first wineries in the Napa Valley.
And the family legacy continues. This month, Mark Beringer has been brought on
as Chief Winemaker for the Estate. A direct descendant of founding brother Jacob
Beringer, Mark brings a familial passion as well as decades of winemaking experience
to Beringer. Its an honor to step in and continue the legacy of winemaking that
Beringer has long been known for. I am incredibly excited to craft wines that reflect
the best of Napa Valley the very same sentiment that led my great-great-grandfather
to establish Beringer in 1876, said Mark Beringer. Most recently at Artesa with
additional experience at Duckhorn, Mark brings great winemaking skill as well as
years of working across a variety of Napa Valley vineyards and appellations.
Visitors to the Estate have many choices of tours, tastings and food pairings which
will enhance the Beringer experience.
The very popular Taste of Beringer tour includes a one-hour tour exploring the
old winery, tunnels and demonstration vineyard followed by a sit-down tasting in the
Rhine House. This tour is available daily at 10:30 a.m., 1 and 3:30 p.m. and
