Pre-Service Modules
Discussion
Overview:
Pre-service reflection provides an opportunity for you to being to think about
what you want to get out of our service-learning experience in a meaningful
way. The concepts of power and privilege are dynamics that underlie all
social relationships. This module will focus on these concepts and task you
with connecting them with your previous experiences. Focused reflection of
your current and/or past perspectives and viewpoints can aid in the

Power and Privilege Module

development of a critical lens in which you will continually examine your

service-learning experience. Ideally, through this practice you will begin the
process of asking questions and making connections two factors that will
assist you in deepening your service-learning experience.
In addition to preparing you for your service-learning experience, this preservice discussion module will provide you the opportunity to begin to
collaborate with your peers. Everyone will bring different perspectives and
worldviews to your service-learning experience. This module will assist you in
initiating the these conversations and how these will intersect with the
service-learning experience
Resources:
-Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack
- Social Identities
- What is Privilege?
-Taxonomy of Power
During this reflection exercise, you will:
describe your current understanding of power and privilege
explore the similarities and differences of your understanding of power and
privilege compared to your peers
articulate new insights about power and privilege
Discussion Instructions:
For this discussion, you are to engage with others by posting comments in a
discussion forum. Start your participation in the discussion by posting your
response to Part 1. After your classmates have posted their responses,
please to respond to them using the questions posed in Part 2 as guide. Be
sure to consult the grading rubric attached to guide your efforts.
Begin your participation in this discussion by posting your response
to the following prompt. There are materials posted in the resource
section to aid you in your reflection:
Part 1
What is your current understanding of power and privilege? Please provide
personal examples of instances or situations where you were conscious of
the presence or absence of power and privilege.

Power and Privilege Module

After reading all of the posts submitted by your peers, please post a
response with the following prompt as guide:
Part 2
After reviewing your peers understanding of power and privilege, how are
they similar and different from yours? Were there any personal examples
that resonated with your own? Were there any that seemed the opposite?
What factors do you think contribute to this? Please provide examples that
directly connect to your peer's responses.
Based on your exploration of the similarities and differences between your
response and your peers, please articulate some insights about the nature of
power and privilege that you have discovered.

In addition to preparing you for your service-learning experience, this preservice blog module will provide you with the opportunity to deeply reflect on
your past experiences. Your past experiences may intersect in various ways
with this service-learning opportunity. This module will assist you in making
these initial connections.
Resources:
-Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack
- Social Identities
- What is Privilege?
-Taxonomy of Power

During this reflection exercise, you will:

describe personal examples of privilege associated with your various social
identities
examine how these examples relate to course content
explore ways that privilege may arise in your service-learning experience
Blog Instructions:
For this blog post, you will begin to reflect more personally on your personal
experiences with power and privilege. Be sure to consult the grading rubric
attached to guide your efforts.
Begin your blog entry by responding to the following prompt. There
are materials posted in the resource section to aid you in your
reflection:

Part 1
After reviewing Peggy McIntosh's "White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible
Backpack" (see resource section), please generate a list of 5 privileges that
are associated with your various social identities. As a reminder, these
identities can include race, gender, sex, economic status, religious affiliation,

Power and Privilege Module

and sexual orientation as well as things as being a college student and

education level.
After generating a list of 5 privileges that are associated with your
various identities, address the following prompt:

Part 2
How does the concept of privilege connect with course content? Are there
any tensions? Why or why not? If it is difficult to make this connection, try to
widen your reflection by thinking about how various social identities intersect
with the academic discipline (for example, being a woman in STEM). How do
you anticipate these privileges intersecting with your service learning
experience?

Mid Service Discussion Module

Overview:
Mid service reflection provides an opportunity for you to consider the service
learning experience you have had thus far, and how you wish to continue
this experience or perhaps improve it in a meaningful way. A focused
consideration of your learning thus far and the progress you can make in the
future weeks can lead to interesting insights and can deepen your
understanding and appreciation of your learning experience while you are
still in the midst of the experience itself.
A mid service module, in addition to allowing you to think about the potential
the rest of your service learning experience, can also help call into focus the
learning and growth that has already occurred. This can also give you an

opportunity to think about how what you are learning can relate to your

During this discussion reflection exercise you will you will:
Articulate questions which will prompt classmates to name their personal
privilege
Respond to classmates discussion points in a thoughtful way which
challenges their peers to think critically about their own power and privilege
Create a plan for how such discussions and conversation could facilitated in
a face to face context
Discussion Instructions:
This assignment is intended to prompt students to interact with and have
productive, respectful conversations with their classmates around the
concepts of power and privilege. The first part of this assignment is to write
a brief (two paragraph) summary of your service learning assignment and
what your responsibilities are there. Within this summary please include
your experience with privilege on site.
Each student is then to respond to two of their classmates (assigned) twice.
This should result in a conversation that looks like this: Summary, response
from classmate, response to classmate, response from classmate, response
to classmate. Thus in total each student will write one summary, two
responses to classmates and three responses from classmates.
The third part of this assignment is to plan a discussion with questions and
anticipated situations which could be instituted in the classroom, rather than
on-line. Two students will be selected at random to execute their plan in a
classroom setting.

Power and Privilege Module

During this blog reflection exercise you will:

Discuss power and privilege in a way that is easily understood by many
types of audiences who might access this online forum.
Articulate the ways in which this post acknowledges your own power and
privilege and the way this makes you feel.
Recognize the way in which other online media acknowledge and apply the
concepts of power and privilege.
Blog Instructions:
This blog intends to be an experience where a student can be creative. The
blog should be intentionally designed to convey the overall theme of the post
and should include at least three creative design elements. This could be a
cartoon, a drawing, computer generated art etc.
The blog should consist of four posts total. The first three posts should
respond to the prompts below, and the artistic aspects should be
incorporated into all three of these posts. The fourth and final post should be
a brief discussion of the design elements of the blog, and how the student
intentionally picked each piece to complement his or her writing.
The three blog posts should respond to each of the following questions:
1. What was your initial impression of the site where you are doing your
service learning? What do you think this reaction says about your
understanding of power and privilege in that moment?
2. Mid-way through your service learning project how has your impression
and understanding of the site where you are working changed? How does
this change of understanding reflect your changes in understanding of power
and privilege? What do you think this means for your own privilege?
3. How do you see this experience changing your experience on other
learning experiences you are currently engaged in? This could relate to your
classroom experiences, your extra-curricular activities etc.

learning experience
Identify implications of the privilege that has been witnessed as they relate
to the students understanding of self.
Essay Instructions:
The words power and privilege can mean many different things to many
different people at many different times in their lives. Please take a moment
at this point in your life to discuss your understanding of power and privilege
and how it plays out in your life, as well as how you have seen them play out
on your service site. This is meant to be a current snapshot of what you're
thinking and feeling right now. This essay should be no less than 5 pages
long, and it should show evidence of thoughtful reflection about where the
students mind is at this point. Please be sure to include specific instances
which have brought you to your current conclusions.

Mid Service Multimedia Module

Power and Privilege Module

understanding and appreciation of your learning experience while you are

still in the midst of the experience itself.
A mid service module, in addition to allowing you to think about the potential
the rest of your service learning experience, can also help call into focus the
learning and growth that has already occurred. This can also give you an
opportunity to think about how what you are learning can relate to your
other current learning experiences, both in and outside the classroom.

Post-Service Modules

Post-Service Essay
Module Overview:
The post-service reflection essay provides a space for you to thread your
service-learning experiences together in a purposeful way. A focused study

privilege in your future workplace.
During this reflection exercise, you will be able to:

Power and Privilege Module

- Express changes of understanding of power and privilege as it developed

over the semester
- Articulate how power and privilege surfaced during your service-learning
experience
- Brainstorm ways to actively name power and privilege in daily life

experiences together in a purposeful way.
Include in your essay the following two parts:
1. One definition of power is, the capacity or ability to direct or influence
the behavior of others or the course of events. Unpack this definition by
articulating a moment in your experiential learning where you held the
power or were subjected to it.
Part 2:
What was your role in relation to that specific moment in regards to power
and privilege? What is your responsibility in the future? How can you name
power and privilege in your daily life now that the semester is over?

Power and Privilege Module

Post-service blogging provides an opportunity for you to collectively

gather your posts from over the semester and make connections between
your experiences. A focused lens on power and privilege enables you to
consider your own power and privilege and how it interacts within the world
around you.
In addition to providing closure of your experience, this post-service
blog will provide a space for you to explore what this service has taught you
about power and privilege moving forward in your future service and
professional endeavors.
During this blogging exercise, you will be able to:
- Describe their experiences with power and privilege using imagery words
- Articulate experiences after their service-learning experience in relation to
power and privilege
- Apply experiences of power and privilege to other areas outside of servicelearning

Post- Service Discussion

Overview:
A post-service discussion allows for your reflection to be shared with
others. In addition, the reflection and comments from your classmates allow
you to compare and contrast your experience with theirs. This helps you
further define power and privilege and how they operate in your daily life.
Keep in mind that each one of your classmates comes to the
conversation with different experiences. A conversation on power and
privilege is meant to be challenging as they function as a challenge within
our greater society. Please be respectful when commenting and replying to
your classmates. These discussions are meant to benefit each of you as they
provide a safe space to participate in mindful conversation.
In this discussion you will:
-Articulate what power and privilege mean to you
-Relate your definition to your classmates definition
-Identify similarities and differences in your definition of power and privilege
in relation to your classmates
- Reflect on constant change within personal definition of power and privilege

Discussion Directions:
Choose two words that relate to your personal definition of power and
privilege. Write a description of each of these words and how they relate to
power or privilege within your learning experience.
Then, take one of your classmates words and compare and contrast it
within your definition of power and privilege. Are your words similar? How is
their approach different than yours? In what way do you see your definition
change as you continue to notice privilege and power in other areas of your
life?

Power and Privilege Module

A post-service multi-media project allows for your reflection and

experiences to be highlighted through images. By constructing a visual,
students can show others what power and privilege means to them as well
as develop a different dimension of their critical thinking of its complexity.
In this Presentation you will:
-gather images that reflect your experience with power and privilege this
semester
-apply a learning progression through images of how your definition of power
and privilege has changed over the semester
-Reflect on the progression of your understanding of power and privilege and
name what moments in the semester challenged your idea of power and
privilege.

Directions:
Using PicMonkey (http://www.picmonkey.com/collage) create a collage that
uses photography from your learning experience, images that reflect on what
power and privilege mean to you, and words that communicate your
conception of this theme. Arrange the images so they reflect your critical
thinking progression; how has your idea of power and privilege changed over
time?
