Application Areas
Supporting triple-play
The FTTX system adopts WDM technology to incorporate CATV signals and subscribers data
and voice service, transmitting through a single fiber by placing a passive optical multiplexer
outside the AN5116-06A, to achieve Triple-play function.
3.2
Supporting FTTH
The AN5116-06A supports Fiber To The Home (FTTH) to deliver high-band service to
subscribers houses.
3.3
The AN5116-06A can guarantee access of voice and data services by introducing optical feeds
to the existent copper LAN network via FTTB, when
3.4
When the AN5116-06A is used together with AN5006-20, it can provide relatively high
bandwidth, ensure access of voice and data services, adapt to the access condition of densely
populated areas, and fully meet current and future communication requirements of rural
subscribers.
3.5
The AN5116-06A provides two kinds of TDM interface cards that provide E1 electrical
interface and STM-1 optical uplink interface respectively. When it is used together with
AN5006-06A-A or AN5006-20 (equipped with TDM card), TDM signal of mobile base station
can be uplinked to transmission equipment to achieve TDM emulation function.

Supports DBA algorithm: The minimum configurable bandwidth of the DBA is no more
than 256 kbit/s; the minimum bandwidth allocation granularity of the DBA is in steps of
4 kbit/s; the accuracy of the DBA is better than 5.
Supports various kinds of ONU, such as SFU, cassette MDU (including LAN type and
XDSL type), shelf-based MDU and HGU ONU.
4.1
Multicast Functions
Supports preview function, including 5 preview parameters: maximum time for a single
preview, preview count allowed, preview interval, auto or manual reset of preview
authority and total preview time.
4.2
The AN5116-06A supports using ITU-T H.248, MGCP and SIP to achieve NGN voice
functions. It uses the ONU to access voice services and uses standard speech encoding
technology to convert voice signals into digital signals which are then transported to an IP
network in IP packets via the OLT. Call control is achieved by a soft-switch or IMS which
provides VoIP access for analog subscribers, meeting the requirements of carrier-class speech
quality, management and operation.
4.2.1
Supports ITU-T H.248, MGCP and SIP protocols to a softswitch to achieve NGN services.

IP CENTERX service.
4.3
Supplementary services, intelligent services and user-defined services assisted by the soft
switch are:
Call waiting.
Immediate hotline.
Distinctive ring.
The AN5116-06A provides E1 circuit emulation based on RFC 5086 (CESoPSN). The
AN5116-06A is equipped with CE1B card and C155A card which respectively provides E1
electrical interface and STM-1 optical interface for uplink connection. The AN5116-06A has a
CES protocol processor built in to translate between TDM format and Ethernet packet format.
Upstream direction: accesses Ethernet packets from the ONU side via EPON / GPON
service card, and after they are processed by core switching card, delivers them to CE1B /
C155A card for protocol translation and transforms them into E1 or STM-1 format to continue
upstream to the SDH network.
BRBRAITT, Jabalpur
Page
Downstream direction: the CE1B / C155A card transforms of E1 / STM-1 TDM traffic
from the SDH network into Ethernet packets and distributes these to the ONUs, which then
restores the original E1 TDM traffic flow. Thus multiple TDM services like mobile base station
backhauling and E1 private line can be realized.
TDM emulation functions supported by the AN5116-06A are as follows:
Supports network management selection of the clock type: clock extracted from E1 line and
clock input on external clock interface of TDM card. There are four clock types to be chosen
via network management system.
4.4
VLAN, also named virtual LAN, is an end-to-end logic network built by network
management software which could go across different network segments and networks based on
switching LAN. The basic VLAN standard is IEEE802.1q. IEEE802.1ad adds VLAN stacking,
also called Q-in-Q VLAN, and is based on IEEE802.1q. Its core concept is to encapsulate the
VLAN tag of users private network in a VLAN tag of public network so that the users traffic
crosses the providers backbone network with two layers of tagging, which provides users with a
relatively simple double-layer VPN tunnel. This achieves transparent VLAN tag transport, i.e.
the users VLAN and the service provider VLAN are independent of each other, effectively
solving VLAN ID addressing space limit of 4k addresses.
Q-in-Q VLAN functions supported by the AN5116-06A are as follows:
Supports VLAN number extension: by adding Q-in-Q VLAN, the number of VLAN is
increased to 40964096 on the basis of existing VLANs.
Supports selected Q-in-Q: the system can add inner, outer VLAN based on the value of
source MAC address, destination MAC address, source IP address, destination IP address,
L4 source port No., L4 destination port No., Ethernet type, inner VLAN ID, outer VLAN
ID, service type, time-to-live, protocol type, L1 CoS, L2 CoS.
Supports selective Q-in-Q for one port, i.e. some services use stacked VLANs, whereas
other services still use single VLAN.
4.5
VLAN translation means access layer equipments transform VLAN tags labeled by users
into unique network-side VLAN tags. This can reduce carriers maintenance workload and
protect convergence layer network and core network.
The VLAN translation function provided by the AN5116-06A can be in one of the
following three forms:
BRBRAITT, Jabalpur
Page
1:1 translation: non-convergence. Under this mode, VLAN translation of upstream and
downstream data traffic is done only by translation of the VID value.
N:1 translation: VLAN convergence function, i.e. converges a number of upstream VLANs
(e.g. VLAN 1, 2,, N) into a unique network-side VLAN ID; and remaps it into
corresponding multiple VLANs in the downstream direction.
Hybrid translation: supports hybrid use of 1:1 VLAN translation and N: 1 VLAN
convergence.
4.6
Supports inter-card protection of the TDM card: the TDM card can be configured to
function independently or support 1:1 protection.
4.7
4.8

Two power supply cards work in dual-power input and protect against reverse polarity
connection. The power supply cards support a distributed power-fed mode and all powered
cards are fed with power independently. Any fault in one card doesnt influence other cards.
This greatly improves equipment reliability and stability.
Fan protection
The system uses fans for cooling. There are indicators on the fan units which indicate the
fan running status and the fan speed is adjusted automatically. The three fans are installed
independently, achieving easy maintenance.

The networking figure for the AN5116-06A application to Q-in-Q VLAN is shown in
Figure .
VLAN translation is also named VLAN mapping. When various service flow of subscriber
side goes through terminal equipments supporting 802.1q (take HG as the example through the
BRBRAITT, Jabalpur

whole document), supposing HG label subscriber services with fixed tags, for the tags labeled by
HG could be out of the valid range defined by operators, the ONU will strip the default tags
labeled by HG and label valid tags when services are uplinked to the ONU. Then the VLAN
translation is finished.
VLAN translation includes two types of translation which are 1:1 VLAN translation and
N:1 VLAN translation. N:1 VLAN translation can converges several VLAN into one valid
VLAN.

500, and the Customer-VLAN tags of voice service are 600. When the services are uplinked to
the AN5116-06A, they are labeled with Service-VLAN tags which are 3000 on the AN5116-06A.
When the labeling of Q-in-Q VLAN is finished, those subscriber services with double VLAN
encapsulation are uplinked to upper network.
6.3
On Internet, such multimedia services as stream media, video meeting and digital TV, are
becoming an important constituent part of information transmission. However, point-to-point
unicast is not suitable for them because of their transmission feature which is point-to-multipoint.
If point-to-point unicast mode is used, servers must provide each receiver with an IP message
duplicate copy and the same messages will be repeatedly transmitted in the network. It will
occupy lots of network resource. Although IP broadcast allows one host to send one IP message
to all hosts in the same network, yet not all hosts need this message. Therefore, much network
resource is wasted. Multicast technology is born under such a circumstance. It allows one host to
send one copy of a multicast frame to multiple dedicated receivers.
The AN5116-06A transmits multicast service in SCB+IGMP mode, and performs
multicast service control and management via multicast control message. See figure 8 for the
AN5116-06A application to multicast service.

request to multicast server and create this group in its table; if the group has already existed in its
table, OLT will directly add the subscriber to its table and set correspondence relationship
between multicast service and the subscriber.
Users can choose to disable the AN5116-06As IGMP Proxy function. In this case,
multicast messages will be broadcast to all EPON interfaces and all ONUs.
The AN5116-06A also supports controllable multicast function. Because IGMP Proxy /
Snooping doesnt include subscriber authentication, subscribers can join or leave a multicast
group at will. And the operators cannot charge subscribers. To solve these problems, the
AN5116-06A controls and manages the access of subscriber multicast service, and performs
subscriber multicast information recording and statistics, and controls and manages multicast
program sources. This could effectively prevent protocol attack, illegal multicast sources, illegal
rebroadcasting, and illegal receivers, so as to guarantee operators benefits.
6.4
The AN5116-06A supports VoIP function. First connect a plain telephone to RJ-11 port of
an ONU. After the voice service is accessed, perform compression encoding to voice signals via
speech compression algorithm to achieve analog-digital translation. Then transform voice data in
packet to IP network in real time via OLT. The call control is realized by soft-switch equipments.
At meantime when the receiving end receives IP data, these IP data are restored to original voice
signals through corresponding decoding and decompression.
The AN5116-06A supports MGCP, H.248 and SIP, and its soft-switch interface is perfectly
connected to MGC gateways produced by various mainstream manufacturers. See figure 9 for
the AN5116-06A application to VoIP voice service.
The CATV signal source produces CATV signals independent of the AN5116-06A.
According to the density of CATV signal source, the signals are amplified and split to different

paths at transmission end and then incorporated with the AN5116-06As EPON signals in a
single fiber for transmission by adding a multiplexer outside using WDM theory. Then CATV
signals are demultiplexed by demultiplexer on remote end ONU. Users can connect TV set to RF
interface of ONU to get accessed to CATV service. See figure 10 for the AN5116-06A
application to CATV service.
Users in business buildings have relatively higher ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) and
more concentrated locations. They occupy an important position in operators competition.
Incorporating voice, data, TDM service and video service, the AN5116-06A is the best
choice for business building users. It can provide users with the following services.
1. Broadband data access: Ethernet interface based;
2. Voice service access: plain old telephone service based, also via some intelligent
terminals (with Ethernet interfaces);
3. Video service access: coaxial cable interface based CATV service or Ethernet
interface based IPTV service;
4. Private line service access: TDM based E1 private line access.
In the application to business buildings, the AN5116-06A can connect SBU (Single
Business Unit) ONU and MDU ONU. MDU ONU can be further subdivided into types such as
LAN, xDSL and card types. See figure 11 for more information about application to business
buildings networking.

via broadband access network. The information service is diversified, becoming more and more
comprehensive and layered. Currently, the information services mainly include family
information service, residence house automation, public service and property management
service, such as remote meter reading, building interphone, public facilities management, exit
and entry control, public broadcast, resident archives management, fee charging and automatic
accounting of three meters (i.e. water, kilowatt hour and gas meters). All these services are
accessed to property management servers by the AN5116-06A and performed by service
providers of the property company.
Newly built residence communities can use FTTH mode. For old communities or the
communities not supporting FTTH, ONU can be placed in the aisles or in the equipment room.
That is to adopt LAN, xDSL or shelf-based MDU for networking to save costs. AN5006 /
AN5506-07 / 09 / 10 is recommended as ONU for LAN MDU; AN5006-20 is recommended as
ONU for shelf-based MDU. See figure 12 for the AN5116-06A application to intelligent
residence communities in FTTH mode.
In Internet bars, the access rates are typically 10 Mbit/s, 20 Mbit/s and 100 Mbit/s, and the
service types are simple, based on high-rate Internet private line access, plus some possible voice
service. Internet bars usually spread around. They require a network system with strong covering
capability. Therefore, fiber access becomes the first choice for most Internet bars.
With data and voice access, as well as excellent OAM features, the AN5116-06A fully
meets the requirements of one network, two bars (Internet bar + phone bar). It satisfies the
requirement to obtain high-rate Internet private line service and voice service through a single

fiber, and performs uniform management by the same network platform. See Figure for the
AN5116-06A application to Internet bars.
City security monitoring project is a huge and comprehensive management system. It not
only meets public security management, city management, traffic management and emergency
management requirements, but also meets video monitor requirements of disastrous accident
early warning and safety production. Furthermore, it takes into account the integration of alarmreporting and door-entry control system, as well as the interconnection with broadcast system.
During the safety city construction, digital monitoring is a key factor. Because lots of
digital video recorders are spread around the city, longer distance transmission and line resource
saving are required. The video signals from video recorders to monitoring center need 1Mbit/s or
more bandwidth. If EPON system is used to access digital monitoring service, the above
requirements can be well satisfied. See Figure for the AN5116-06A application to city security
monitoring project.
As shown in the figure, ONU is placed in the monitor point; the encoder and hard-disk
video recorder are connected to ONU via Ethernet interface and they perform compression
encoding to the collected real-time images which is then uplinked to the AN5116-06A. The
AN5116-06A is placed in supervision center room and connected to network matrix host in
supervision center via uplink interface. It views the uplinked images in real time and meanwhile
performs video recording 24 hours a day, which keeps data information for functional
departments for city management, in case of information processing and application afterwards.
Besides, because of the access of alarm-reporting supervision system, when there is an alarm, the
corresponding alarm information will be transported to alarm-reporting command centers of
