massacresthroughouttheempiremeanttofrightenArmeniansandsodampentheirexpectations,

amajorityofArmenians.
InresponsetothecrisisintheOttomanEmpire,anewpoliticalgroupcalledtheYoungTurksseized
powerbyrevolutionin1908.FromtheYoungTurks,theCommitteeofUnionandProgress(CUP),
IttihadveTerakkiJemiyeti,emergedattheheadofthegovernmentinacoupstagedin1913.Itwas
ledbyatriumvirate:Enver,MinisterofWarTalaat,MinisteroftheInterior(GrandVizierin1917)
andJemal,MinisteroftheMarine.TheCUPespousedanultranationalisticideologywhichadvocated
theformationofanexclusivelyTurkishstate.Italsosubscribedtoanideologyofaggrandizement
throughconquestdirectedeastwardtowardotherregionsinhabitedbyTurkicpeoples,atthattime
subjecttotheRussianEmpire.TheCUPalsosteeredIstanbultowardcloserdiplomaticandmilitary
relationswithImperialGermany.WhenWorldWarIbrokeoutinAugust1914,theOttomanEmpire
formedpartoftheTripleAlliancewiththeotherCentralPowers,GermanyandAustriaHungary,and
itdeclaredwaronRussiaanditsWesternallies,GreatBritainandFrance.
TheOttomanarmiesinitiallysufferedastringofdefeatswhichtheymadeupwithaseriesofeasy
militaryvictoriesintheCaucasusin1918beforetheCentralPowerscapitulatedlaterthatsameyear.
Whetherretreatingoradvancing,theOttomanarmyusedtheoccasionofwartowageacollateral
campaignofmassacreagainstthecivilianArmenianpopulationintheregionsinwhichwarfarewas
beingconducted.ThesemeasureswerepartofthegenocidalprogramsecretlyadoptedbytheCUP
andimplementedunderthecoverofwar.TheycoincidedwiththeCUP'slargerprogramtoeradicate
theArmeniansfromTurkeyandneighboringcountriesforthepurposeofcreatinganewPan
Turanianempire.Throughthespringandsummerof1915,inallareasoutsidethewarzones,the
Armenianpopulationwasordereddeportedfromtheirhomes.Convoysconsistingoftensof
thousandsincludingmen,women,andchildrenweredrivenhundredsofmilestowardtheSyrian
desert.
Thedeportationsweredisguisedasaresettlementprogram.Thebrutaltreatmentofthedeportees,
mostofwhomweremadetowalktotheirdestinations,madeitapparentthatthedeportationswere
mainlyintendedasdeathmarches.Moreover,thepolicyofdeportationsurgicallyremovedthe
Armeniansfromtherestofsocietyanddisposedofgreatmassesofpeoplewithlittleorno
destructionofproperty.Thedisplacementprocess,therefore,alsoservedasamajoropportunity
orchestratedbytheCUPfortheplunderingofthematerialwealthoftheArmeniansandprovedan
effortlessmethodofexpropriatingalloftheirimmovableproperties.
ThegenocidalintentoftheCUPmeasureswasalsoevidencedbythemasskillingsthataccompanied
thedeportations.Earlier,ArmeniansoldiersintheOttomanforceshadbeendisarmedandeither
workedtodeathinlaborbattalionsoroutrightexecutedinsmallbatches.Withtheeliminationofthe
ablebodiedmenfromtheArmenianpopulation,thedeportationsproceededwithlittleresistance.
Theconvoyswerefrequentlyattackedbybandsofkillersspecificallyorganizedforthepurposeof
slaughteringtheArmenians.Asitsinstrumentofextermination,thegovernmenthadauthorizedthe
formationofgangsofbutchersmostlyconvictsreleasedfromprisonexpresslyenlistedintheunits
ofthesocalledSpecialOrganization,TeshkiltiMahsusa.Thissecretoutfitwasheadedbythemost
ferociouspartisansoftheCUPwhotookituponthemselvestocarryouttheordersofthecentral
governmentwiththecovertinstructionsoftheirpartyleaders.Asizableportionofthedeportees,
includingwomenandchildren,wereindisciminatelykilledinmassacresalongthedeportationroutes.
Thecrueltycharacterizingthekillingprocesswasheightenedbythefactthatitwasfrequentlycarried
outbytheswordinterrifyingepisodesofbloodshed.Furthermore,forthesurvivors,theirwitnessing
ofthemurderoffriendsandrelativeswiththemassofinnocentpersonswasthesourceofserious
trauma.Manyyoungerwomenandsomeorphanedchildrenwerealsoabductedandplacedin
bondageinTurkishandMuslimhomesresultinginanothertypeoftraumacharacterizedbytheshock
oflosingbothfamilyandone'ssenseofidentity.Thesewomenandchildrenwerefrequently
forbiddentogrieve,wereemployedasunpaidlaborers,andwererequiredtoassimilatethelanguage
andreligionoftheircaptors.
Thegovernmenthadmadenoprovisionsforthefeedingofthedeportedpopulation.Starvationtook
anenormoustollmuchasexhaustionfelledtheelderly,theweakerandtheinfirm.Deporteeswere
deniedfoodandwaterinadeliberateefforttohastendeath.Thesurvivorswhoreachednorthern
Syriawerecollectedatanumberofconcentrationcampswhencetheyweresentfurthersouthtodie
underthescorchingsunofthedesert.Throughmethodicallyorganizeddeportation,systematic
massacre,deliberatestarvationanddehydration,andcontinuousbrutalization,theOttoman
governmentreduceditsArmenianpopulationtoafrightenedmassoffamishedindividualswhose
familiesandcommunitieshadbeendestroyedinasinglestroke.
Resistancetothedeportationswasinfrequent.Onlyinoneinstancedidtheentirepopulationofan
Armeniansettlementmanagetoevadedeath.ThemountaineersofMusaDaghdefendedthemselves
intheheightsabovetheirvillagesuntilFrenchnavalvesselsintheeasternMediterraneandetected
themandtransportedthemtosafety.TheinhabitantsofthecityofVanineasternArmeniadefended
themselvesuntilrelievedbyadvancingRussianforces.TheyabandonedthecityinMay1915,amonth
afterthesiegewaslifted,whentheRussianArmywithdrew.Thefleeingpopulationwashunteddown
mercilesslybyTurkishirregularforces.Inlandtownsthatresisted,suchasUrfa(Edessa),were
reducedtorubblebyartillery.ThesurvivaloftheArmeniansinlargepartiscreditednottoactsof
resistance,buttothehumanitarianinterventionledbyAmericanAmbassadorHenryMorgenthau.
AlthoughtheAlliedPowersexpresslywarnedtheOttomangovernmentaboutitspolicyofgenocide,

GreekarmythathadoccupiedIzmir(Smyrna)wherethelastintactArmeniancommunityinAnatolia
