Service Description
Instron performs two types of temperature
verifications in the field. Type 1 is referred to as
In-situ and is performed by comparing a
calibrated thermocouple's reading to either the set
temperature or the readout of the system being
verified. The calibrated thermocouple is placed as
close as possible to the transducer being verified,
or in an alternate location specified by the
customer. For a chamber uniformity survey,
multiple calibrated thermocouples are used to
measure the temperature at multiple locations
within a chamber. Type 2 is Sensor substitution
and is done by injecting calibrated signals into the
instrument being verified. This simulates
a correctly performing thermocouple (mV)
or RTD (ohms).

TEMPERATURE CALIBRATION
Instron ensures you are operating at the
proper temperature.

Type 1 is preferred because the entire system is

verified. Type 2 verifies the electronics only and is
used when Type 1 is not possible or practical.
Often an in-situ (Type 1) verification will be done
at one temperature (e.g. the current temperature
of a process), then a sensor substitution
verification (Type 2) will be performed on the
electronics to ensure they are operating properly
throughout their range. Many calibration vendors
only perform Type 2 verifications.
The basic in-situ calibration is for one data point,
and the basic sensor substitution calibration is for
five data points. Additional points are optional.

When Do You Need to

Verify Temperature?

Types of Equipment Verified

Performing a test or running a process at the

incorrect temperature is a frequent source of bad
results or poor quality. Many material properties
are temperature dependent, so ensuring that your
temperature measurement is accurate is often
critical for achieving good results. Variability of
temperature either in accuracy or uniformity is
a significant, and often unrecognized, contributor
to reduced product quality and inconsistent
test data. Verification of temperature
measuring systems is often not performed
frequently enough or with appropriate procedures
and methodologies.

other brands

Temperature data loggers, circular or strip

chart recorders

Temperature indicators of all types

Heat treating and finishing equipment

All types of testing equipment that utilize

temperature control

Temperature controls for various

manufacturing processes

To address these challenges, Instron has

developed a number of temperature verification
procedures that meet the most common
requirements of laboratories and related
manufacturing processes. These procedures are
compliant with ISO/IEC 17025 methodology,
providing assurance that your test data is valid
and processes are properly controlled.

We can also determine temperature profiles used

to characterize gradients, including oven and
chamber uniformity surveys.

Effects of Temperature on Results

Standard in-situ pricing assumes that temperature

change rate is 10 C per minute or faster.

84 MPa

PLASTIC SAMPLE

Material properties can be affected by small

changes in temperature. Errors in temperature
mean errors in results.
