ALCATEL-LUCENT

1830 VERSATILE WDM

MODULE

COMPACT WDM EXTENSION SHELF

RELEASE 1.0

The Alcatel-Lucent 1830 Versatile WDM Module (VWM) is a passive, compact add-on shelf
that provides Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) extension to network elements
without built-in WDM capability. It is a managed platform that supports point-to-point and ring
applications in metro access, metro core, data center and enterprise networks. For operators
challenged to meet growing and unpredictable bandwidth demands, the scalability and flexibility
of the 1830 VWM accelerate time-to-revenue generation and reduce total cost of ownership.

The Alcatel-Lucent 1830 VWM is a half-RU

shelf, which houses up to two CWDM
modules (separate for East and West)
and a simple controller module that can
provide inventory and status information
to a collocated host system. The product
complements the Alcatel-Lucent 7210
Service Access Switch (SAS) in business
services, mobile backhaul and triple-play
applications. It also enables a cost-effective
Fixed Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer
(FOADM) solution for data center, storage
area network (SAN) interconnect, and
metro applications.

Up to three drop shelves can be cascaded

in daisy chain, if the USB connector is
used to connect (upstream) the first drop
shelf to the main shelf

FEATURES

Reduces OPEX, passively powered with

a small footprint

Up to eight CWDM wavelengths/channels

in a single line card slot
Support for client signals at any bit rate
(100 Mb/s to 10 Gb/s) up to 8 x 10-Gb/s
CWDM channels
Capability to add/drop one, two or
four channels and pass through other
channels (OADM)
Support for multiple configurations and
multiple network architectures
Configurable as a line terminal and an
OADM to support both point-to-point
and ring network applications
Integral equipment controller manages
the filter units and communication
with the master NE including inventory
information. Common management
and control in Alcatel-Lucent 7210 SAS
solutions

Up to six drop shelves can be cascaded

in daisy chain, if the Optical Management
Communication (OMCx) connector is used
to connect (upstream) the first drop shelf
to the main shelf

BENEFITS
Enables network operators to cost
effectively and quickly meet fluctuating
bandwidth demands

Maximizes revenue opportunities with

support for a wide range of services
and configurations
Enables simplified, cost-effective
operations and deployment with a
common management/control solution
Reduces CAPEX by optimizing fiber
utilization
