Heroin abuse remains key

concern of Washington County DA
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
Immediate treatment of individuals
experiencing heroin overdoses are
helping those people survive,
Washington County District Attorney
Mark Bensen said during a report to
the Washington County Board April
21.
Every time I hear overdose, I used
to think that meant death. But there are
many overdose cases that do not result
in death because of the quick actions of
law enforcement as well as first responders, as well as the presence of Narcan
thats out there, Bensen said.
Reasonable minds can disagree, I suppose, of whether thats a good or bad
thing to make the Narcan so prevalent.
But it is out there, it is saving lives.
Bensen said barely a week goes
by that were involved in some overdose
case where someone survives, and
then charges are sought to get the individuals into treatment.
Bensen said law enforcement treats
every heroin overdose as a crime.
During 2014, the Washington County
District Attorneys Office charged five
people in connection with the heroin
deaths of four people.
Bensen said there are currently two
active investigations of heroin overdose
deaths where law enforcement agen-

victims obtained the heroin.
During questioning by the board,
Bensen said there are attempts being
made to make the community aware of
the seriousness of the heroin abuse
issue, including heroin summits that
have been held in several communities.
Were doing a reasonably decent
job on getting the awareness out there.
I just think theres more things that need
to fall into place, Bensen said. As I
understand it this heroin addiction is so
hard to kick that once youre on it, its
very, very difficult to get off until youre
restrained for a period of time.
In addition, Bensen said smaller
presentations have been made to community groups throughout the county.
Bensen added that heroin cases
are related to many theft cases. He said
that anecdotally, 80 to 90 percent of
the retail theft cases I see now, those
individuals are related to drug use
theyre stealing to support their drug
habit.
He added that many other cases
are related to drug use, including individuals stealing items from family members, identity theft and robbery incidents.
Bensens comments were part of a
presentation to the board on activities
during 2014. Bensens office is

Bensen mentioned several high profile cases that occurred during 2014,
including the conviction of an individual
who attempted to kill his ex-girlfriend
and an individual who was convicted
of first degree homicide in the death of
a Hartford woman the previous year.
That individual has since been sentenced to life in prison.
In summarizing the overall numbers
from the 2014 report, Bensen said fig-

The history of Mothers Day

By Samm Erickson

middle of the 1800s, there was little recognition of the condition of women in the United
States. They were not allowed to vote and
many lived under tyrannical rule. To combat
this, a homemaker named Anna Jarvis organized a day to raise awareness about the
plight of women. When Jarvis died in 1905,
her daughter, also named Anna, began to
organize and campaign in order to memorialize the work and the life of her mother.
Jarvis lobbied businessman and presidents,
including Taft and Roosevelt. One of the first
organized services took place in 1908 at
Jarvis' church in West Virginia. In 1914,
President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill recognizing Mother's Day as a national holiday.
Anna Jarvis' favorite flower was the
white carnation and it was tradition to give
carnations as a present. In time, the tradition
evolved into more elaborate gifts, cards and
flower arrangements and many became
concerned with the increasing commercialism of Mother's Day, including Jarvis.
Believing that the sentiment was corrupted
by the increasing search for profit, Jarvis is
said to have confessed that she wished she

Despite what some might say, celebrating mothers is not a recent invention of the
greeting card industry. In fact, tributes to
mothers have been made across cultures
throughout history. Mother's Day celebrations typically take place in the spring, associating mothers with a return to life and virility, and have always been closely associated
with religion and spirituality. The ancient
Greeks celebrated Rhea, the mother of the
gods, and the ancient Romans celebrated
Cybele, a mother goddess. The modern celebration of Mother's Day began in England
in the 17th century.
In the 1600s, England celebrated mothers during Mothering Sunday. The holiday
took place on the fourth Sunday of Lent and
was established to honor the mothers of
England. Servants were given the day off
and encouraged to return to their homes to
spend the day with their mothers. As
Christianity spread, the honor applied to
mothers was extended to the Mother Church.
Over time, these festivals blended and both
the church and mothers were celebrated.
Official Mother's Day celebrations in
America started about 150 years ago. In the

Dear Dr. Winter, I would like to inquire about the

cost of mini implants. I actually just learned about
them after finding out I need a partial for 6 missing
teeth in a row on my upper left. I am interested in
finding out your mini implant prices without
extractions, bone grafting, or X-Rays. How much
difference in price is there from a three teeth bridge
to a 6-tooth bridge? Also, are your mini implant
procedures done the same day?
Dear Jean, mini-implants are not used for posterior
bridgework. The narrow diameter of the implant
(1.8mm wide) and the hard chewing would lead to
failure of the mini-implants and the bridgework!
There may be some dentists that are willing to do a
large bridge with mini-implants but that would never
be done at Hampton Dental Associates. Again
making a large bridge and anchoring it to very small
pins would lead to the bridge being pushed left and
right during chewing. That is why the FDA has
approved mini-implants for long-term use for
retaining dentures and partial dentures.
Another complicating factor is that the bone in the
upper jaw is not very dense compared to the lower
arch. Maxillary bone is like Styrofoam or balsa wood
compared to pine or oak in the lower jaw.
Mini--implants are used to retain dentures or
partials or to hold on to a single crown in the lower
front of the mouth. Other than that you would require
a minimum of 3 implants for replacing 6 teeth. I
would be happy to discuss traditional implant
bridges, extractions, grafting and any other treatment
options if you wish to schedule a comprehensive
examination and x-ray visit. Giving fees without
seeing x-rays or examining your bite and adjacent
teeth would be guessing as several factors go into
calculating the best treatment options. If you still
have teeth in the upper arch and there are 6 teeth that
need to be removed it is probable that there are issues

on the other side of the mouth as well that need to

be diagnosed and addressed. Sometimes implant
options can be discussed to address all of your
problems at one time. I am sorry you are having
problems and are faced with tooth loss. Please take
the time to read my articles and view our
testimonials at www.hamptondentalassociates.com
I put a lot of information on these pages to

Play it safe on prom night

Prom is a memorable and enjoyable
event for high school students. A chance
for teenagers to insert some glamour into
their lives, prom also provides an opportunity to make lasting memories with friends
before high school ends and college
begins.
While prom should be fun, that revelry
should not come at the expense of safety.
Prom night is most enjoyable when it is safe
and memorable for all the right reasons,
and teens and parents can take the following steps to ensure prom night goes safely.
Attend prom with trusted friends.
Plan to arrive to and depart from the party
together. Each friend should do their best
to look out for each member of their
group's well-being.
Establish an itinerary. Teens should
work with their friends to plan an itinerary
for prom night and share that itinerary with
parents and guardians who will want to
know where their kids will be before, during and after the prom. In addition to
establishing an itinerary, accept curfews
established by parents and make sure
mobile phones are turned on to accept
calls from parents who may need reassurance. Choose activities that do not involve
drinking or irresponsible behavior. Once
prom has ended, enjoy a movie together
as a group or play a round of mini golf. Or
go for a late night meal at a nearby diner.
Choose wardrobe wisely. Long
gowns and high heels can increase the risk
of falls. Keep fashion a priority but also
maximize comfort and safety. Be sure you
can walk around comfortably in your
shoes and that your gown does not make
it difficult to walk up and down staircases.
Do not carry large sums of money
with you to prom. It's best to avoid taking
a lot of cash to prom, as young ladies can't
keep watchful eyes on their handbags as

they cut a rug, and young men might leave

their wallets in their unattended sports
coats.
Do not take offerings of drinks from
unsealed containers, even if they look
innocuous. Teens should be wary of
accepting drinks offered in unsealed containers, especially if those drinks are
offered by strangers. If a drink tastes funny,
stop drinking it and report it to a faculty
member or chaperone.
Don't feel pressured to drink alcohol
or do drugs. The majority of promgoers
want to have clean fun as they listen and
dance to music and share laughs with their
friends, so students should not feel pressured to engage in risky behavior involving drugs and alcohol. If someone is pressuring you and/or your friends, walk away
and encourage your friends to do the
same.
Be aware of your surroundings at
night, especially when you leave the prom.
Ask the limousine driver to pick you up in a
well-lit area of the parking lot so you are
not vulnerable to people with ill intentions.
Do not feel pressured to engage in
sexual behavior. Teens should never feel
pressured to engage in sexual behavior.
Such pressure might be especially prevalent on prom night, but students should not
feel obligated to engage in any behavior
they prefer to avoid. If pressure arises, call
a parent to come pick you up immediately.
Ensure that after-prom parties will be
adult-supervised and are in a safe location. Parents should chaperone any after
parties to prevent teens from engaging in
risky, unsafe behavior.
Take host laws seriously. Parents
hosting an after-party must keep in mind
that they may be responsible for the
actions of their guests. Teens should never
be served alcohol, so keep careful tabs on
party activities and have zero-tolerance for
alcohol or poor behavior. Prom night can
be a great experience for teens. By playing it smart and safe, teens can enjoy a
night they will remember for years to
come.

The standing of women has come a long

When you celebrate Mother's Day year,

international tradition to honor the devotion

WB Parks Archery Range gets addition

and springtime updates
The West Bend Parks, Recreation and Forestry
Department staff is currently updating the targets and
adding a new Crossbow butt at the city Archery Range
located at 512 Municipal Drive, across the street from
the Wastewater Treatment plant on the east side of
West Bend.
According to Parks Superintendent, Mike Jentsch,
"Improvements to the range were made possible by a
donation from Whitetails Unlimiteda national conservation organization, dedicated to conservation, education and the preservation of the hunting traditionwho recently donated $500 to help offset the
cost of the new targets.
As part of the range update, the Parks staff will be

discarding several wood fiber bales, re-stuffing and

bagging some of the existing targets and installing
new targets. A very special addition this year will be
the brand new crossbow target which is the first of its
kind at the range. Jentsch noted that "crossbow shooters will be asked to refrain from using broadheads as
they can cause excessive damage to the targets.
Jentsch also emphasized that "funding for the
development, maintenance and improvements of the
Archery Range has been supported by generous
donations from many organizations in our community
and a big thank you goes out to each and every one
of them."
