From the various plots above, it can be easily seen that series connected solar cell panel
produces less current compared to parallel connected solar cell panel but its voltage is also large
compared with the others. Figure 3 shows that the individual voltage of the panel adds up when
connected in series. In figure 5 also, it shows that the effect of changing the connections to
parallel makes the individual panel current to add up. From figure 7 on the other hand, both the
voltage and current change because series and parallel connection is combined. This is in accord
in the theory that series connection adds up its voltage while maintaining its current whereas
parallel connection adds up its current while maintaining its voltage.
The effect of changing the load resistance on voltage and current for the various cases
can be analyzed by this equation and the graph below:
V = I R (Ohms Law)
R = V / I or 1 / R = I / V
Can be written to,
I/V = 1 / R = slope of the line from the origin to a point in the I-V curve. (Figure 8)
Vertical line = infinite slope, this means that the load resistance is almost zero.
Horizontal line = 0 slope, this means that the load resistance is very large.
From the plot below (Figure 8), as the load resistance increases (slope decreases, line
slope from 1/R1 to 1/R2), the current slowly decreases and the voltage increases. But as the load
resistance increases more, a large current drop occurs with just a small increase in voltage until
it becomes zero at open circuit voltage. The net effect is as the load resistance increases, the
voltage increases and the current will decrease, just as stated in Ohms law.

The effect on shading of the composite array is when connected in series, the total current
could drop because the shaded cell is not producing current anymore and may become forward
biased if other unshaded modules are connected in parallel, resulting in heating of the cell. This can
lead to degradation of the cell performance and more worst to premature cell failure. But this can
be avoided by installing a bypass diode (shown in figure 9), which acts as a bypass for current when
it cant flow through a solar cell being shaded.

The purpose of the blocking diode is to not to allow the passage of current in reverse
direction to the panel, in cases where there is no sun and a battery bank will have a greater voltage
compared to the panels, current could flow in reverse direction if blocking diode is not installed and
it will cause to heat up the panels.
