HOW TO TELL THE EARTH IS ROUND

Long ago, many people believed the world was flat. They did not
think the Earth was a ball, or a sphere. Today, we can look at
photographs from space. The photographs clearly show that the world
is a round sphere. The ancient Greeks did not have space photographs,
but they figured out that the world was not flat. They figured out
Earth was a round sphere. How did they do it?
More than two thousand years ago, the ancient Greeks wrote down their arguments
for a spherical Earth. Their arguments were based on what they could observe, or see,
with their eyes alone. The Greeks observed ships going out to sea. If the Earth were
would, the ships would appear smaller and smaller. As the ships sailed farther out, they
would appear to be tiny dots. Finally, they would just disappear.
But the ancient Greeks made the observation that ships did not disappear that way.
Instead, first to disappear was the ships hull. The ships hull disappeared first over the
horizon. The horizon is the line where the sky seems to meet the earth. Second, the ships
mast began to disappear. The mast is a tall, upright pole that supports sails. The ship
appeared to sink below the horizon. This could only happen if the sea had a curved surface.
The ancient Greeks made sky observations, too. They observed that the sky looked
different from different places. Different stars appeared as one travelled north or south.
This could only happen if the Earth was curved. If the Earth were flat, the stars would
appear in the same place no matter where one went.
As the Greeks travelled north and south, they also made observations about the
sun. The sun appeared at different heights in the sky at certain times. The height
depended on the time and how far north or south one had travelled. This could only happen
if the Earth was spherical. If the Earth were flat, the sun appear at the same height at
the same times no matter where one went.
