IwouldliketoreopenanissuerelatedtoPreEngineeredBuildings,withtheavailabilityofLatestIS
8002007.
WhiletheAnalysisofanyStructurewouldbeuniversal,designsneedtobedoneasperthelocal/
regionalcodes.OtherwisewhydifferentcountrieshavedifferentcodesofPractice?Forexample,Ifa
PEBisbuiltinIndia,TheloadcalculationsneedtobeasperthelatestIS875,thedesignsneedtobe
asperIS800formainframemembers,asperIS801forthinrolledsecondarymembers(ZandC
purlinsandGirts).Ifacountrydoesnothaveacode,thebuildingmayfollowtheUBC,orthecodeof
acountrynearbyIFsuitable.

Tomakethesuperstructuremosteconomicalandverycompetitive,mostofthePEBvendorsselect
thecodesasperTHEIRrequirement.Forexample,forastructurebuiltinIndia,theymightcalculate
theloadsasperIS875,butdothedesignasperAISCorAISI,MBMAanduseweldsasperAWS.If
theyfeelthattheSteelSectionislighterasperonecode,theywilladoptTHATclauseofthecodeand
selectanotherclauseofanothercodeofanothercountryforthedesignofsomeotherpartofthe
samebuilding.SomePEBvendorsselectsomeclausesofPreviousversionsoftheCodeandother
clausesoftheLatestVersions!Thisstyleisnotthesameeverytime.PEBDesignteamsareon
constantresearchintheSelectionofCodalprovisionsofVariouscountriesandareontrialswith
differentclauses.
Thiswayofvarieddesignisnotlegallyvalid.IftheloadsandCodesarenotspecifiedbythebuyer,It
isbindingonthePEBsuppliertousetheLocal/RegionalCodesofpractice.
TheevolutionofaCodeofPracticeisbasedontheWeather&otherclimaticconditions,Material,Local
Practices,Skilllevelsatmanufacturing,Transporting,Assembling,erecting,finishingandmaintaining.
HenceitisridiculoustouseIndianSteelplateofanyyieldstress,CutandmanufacturedinIndia,
Loaded&transportedinIndianStyle,UnloadedandstackedinIndianStyle,Assembled&erectedby
Indian(skilled)Labour,FinishedbyIndianPaintersusingIndianpaints,MaintainedbyIndianClientin
anIndianTownorvillageBUTDESIGNEDUSINGAMERICANCODE!Mostoftheclients,Architects

IS800:2007doesnotcontainprovisionsforthedesignofcoldformedsections.Thereisnoharmin
usingIS801fordesigningcoldformedsections.OnlythingisthatitusesAllowablestressmethod
andusestheeffectivewidthconcept,proposedbyProf.Winterin1950s(Theapplicabilityofthe
effectivewidthconcepttounstiffenedelementsunderuniformcompressionwasstudiedindetailby
Prof.Kalyanaramanetal.(1977),whotestedalargenumberofbeamsandshortcolumnsthat
containedwebelementsthatwerefullyeffective.Testsofasimilarnaturepreviouslyreportedby
Winter(1947,1970)andtheexperimentalandanalyticalresearchbyKalyanaramanetal.(1977),
ledtotheadoptionoftheeffectivewidthapproachforuniformlycompressedunstiffenedelementsin
the1986editionoftheAISISpecificationandsubsequentlyinIS801.

PEBvendorintime.ThePEBvendorishappytoshareonlytheanalysisinputfileandtheoutputfiles
anditisnexttoimpossibletodiscussthedesignoftheweld,weldthickness,connectiondetailssuch
asrafterrafter,raftercolumn,baseplatedesign,boltsdesignetc.
TheclientgoesforPEBtosavetimeandthevendortakesadvantageofthesamebyalwaystaking
shelterbehindthetimelines.
Theloadcombinationusedinanalysisanddesignalsovaryfromvendortovendor.Itisverydifficult(
notimpossible)tochecktheweldthicknessesatsiteandtheywillalwaysasktheconsultanttocheck
thesameinfactory.
ThemainconsultantissharingtheresponibilitywiththePEBvendorsanditishightimethatthey

IhopeyouareawarethatalmostallthePEBsuppliersinIndia(andevenabroad)areonlyPEB
vendorsandnotequippedwithanyRCCorCivilworkstafforequipmentsorexperiencetothat
effect.So,muchaswewouldlikethemtoquotefortheotherwork,theyareneitheradequately
equippedtohandlethatworknorareinterestedintakinguptheadditionalheadacheorburden(andit
alsogivesthemascapegoattoblameincaseofdelays!!)

Andinmostcases,theyonlyquotepersqmofcoveredarea,withoutgivinganydetailsaboutthe
designsbeingfollowedorwhetherIndian/AmericanCodesarebeingfollowed,unlesscompelledtodo
that.
OnehastousethePEBproducts,withawordofcaution,andframethecontractprovisions
accordingly.Wearefairlyclosetoadaywhensteelbuildingsshouldbetherule,ratherthanbeingthe
exception,ifweworktogethertogivetheClient,bestvalueforhismoney.

NextstepistodesigntheFieldjoints(Wherethepartsareassembledatthesite).Theresultant
forcesareknownatthejoints,designaboltedconnection,preferablyperpandiculartotheplaneof
