Public Consultation
- help us decide the future of the Vales most popular park

Introduction
Situated on the banks of the River Thames in Abingdon, Abbey Meadow
is a great place to spend time with friends and family.
Vale of White Horse District Council wants to make it even better so that
it attracts more visitors to the area throughout the year.
Last year we talked to local community groups and school students
about how Abbey Meadow could be improved. We have used their
ideas, along with results from previous studies, to identify three possible
scenarios for the future of the site.
To help us decide the future of Abbey Meadow please read through
the three scenarios in this leaflet then tell us which one you prefer by
completing our online survey or by returning the attached form.
Please note - we need to hear back from you by 7 April 2015.

About Abbey Meadow

Particularly popular during spring and summer, Abbey Meadow is the
most-visited park in the Vale of White Horse district. The site boasts
an attractive riverside location, just a few minutes walk from Abingdons
historic town centre.
The park currently offers a range of sports and leisure facilities, including:

outdoor swimming pool

play park

childrens splash pad

tennis courts

crazy golf

pitch and putt

kiosk selling coffee and ice cream during the summer
holidays
Some facilities are well used and some are in need of repair.

Scenario A
- a place to swim and play
Scenario A would see the outdoor pool refurbished to ensure that it can
continue to remain in operation over the summer months for years to
come.
We would aim to carry out essential repairs to the swimming pool and
changing rooms as well as extensive redecoration. We expect this work
to be expensive so this limits other improvements that can be made to
the rest of Abbey Meadow.
Improvements we can make

repair the outdoor swimming pool

improve the public toilets

Additional improvements we will consider

refurbish the changing rooms

improving the existing coffee kiosk
new picnic tables and seating
enhance the splash pad
improve the under tens play area
install adventure play equipment for over tens
provide outdoor gym equipment
electricity supply to allow temporary mobile ice rink
refurbish the tennis courts

Scenario B
- a place to relax and unwind
Scenario B would see creation of a brand new riverside caf or restaurant
providing a great picturesque location in which to dine, stop for a snack
or enjoy a drink.
We would also look to provide a number of other improvements that
would improve the possibilities for people to relax and unwind in Abbey
Meadow.
Please note, under this scenario the splash pad area and childrens
playground would remain on-site, however the outdoor pool would need
to be removed.

Scenario C
- a flexible outdoor space
Scenario C aims to give the local community much more freedom in
how they use the area. It would see much of Abbey Meadow being
transformed to flexible green space that would allow different activities,
public events, exhibitions and performances to take place. This scenario
would allow us to deliver a greater number of additional improvements
than either A or B.
Please note the outdoor pool would need to be removed.

The results of this public consultation will be published in the Summer
2015. The Vale councils cabinet will consider which scenario and
facilities are taken forward for development, subject to planning and other
constraints.
