Bowls Newsletter
Damn – two months as well as Christmas have passed since I wrote the last newsletter and I’ve
got to try and remember everything that’s happened.

I might as well start the way I finished last year, on a sad note. Since the last newsletter our club
and some of our neighbouring clubs have had their fair share of bereavements with members or
their families. Thelma McNay, Gerda Finlayson, Dulcie Powell our Patron, and the latest, Terry
McMahon from our club. Also Robbie Strang, a stalwart of the old Paparoa club and Elaine
Pearce from the Hakaru ladies club. Our thoughts go out to all these families and we hope the rest
of 2010 holds much happier times for them and everybody else.

Now let’s talk about bowls. The second leg of our Big Double, the McCallum 4s was played on De-
cember 18. Winners on the day were John Dunn, Roger Kerr-Davis, Les Payne and Bill Burgess
from Onerahi.
Winners of the Double and $1200 worth of Steven Gillingham House of Travel vouchers were first
leg winners Ian McMurchy, Jim Taylor, Artie Marsh and Bruce Clarkson from Maungatapere. It’s
worth noting though that the team second overall was an all-women team from Hakaru – June Wil-
son, Shirley Devries, Helen Hawkins and Anna Hanna. Never let it be said women can’t foot it with
the men on the bowling green.

Club events completed during this time resulted in wins to:-

Women’s’ Junior Singles: Shirley Bird
Men’s Champ 4s: Ron McCallum, Rex Roadley, John Anderson, Gerald Barnett
Men’s Handicap Pairs: Kevin Robinson and Dave Briggs

Sunday 17 January the club held their annual Fun Day with 38 people playing and quite a few
looking on. The winning team on the day was Helen Nevill, Ray Hines, Tim & Debbie Holt.
Starting at 1pm and three games of about an hour followed by a barbeque at about 5pm, every-
body had a good day with good company. Thanks to the sponsors Kelvin Colthurst (Greenlea
Meats) for a box of tender steak. Terry McCook, (Maungaturoto Auto Painters) Robin Dickens
(Cartage Contractors) RD1, and Carters.

Coming Events, get your entries in:

- Men’s Championship Singles 6/7 February

Paparoa Hotel Triples any combination Wed 24 February
Paton Triples any combination Mon 16 March
The men’s Championship Triples will be rescheduled from 27/28 February due to last year’s win-
ning skip Kevin Robinson being away with the Northland development team and a clash with a
large Rodney Rugby Reunion the same weekend. Everybody will be notified of the new dates.

Don’t forget the Tuesday morning rollups. Names in by 59.15am for a 9.30am start. New and in-
tending members welcome.
