The cherry blossoms were in full bloom along Chapel Avenue in Cherry Hill Township last week. The two-mile stretch of cherry trees is
located between Kings Highway and Haddonfield Road. The trees are flanked with American flags and yellow ribbons on a portion of the
stretch near Kennedy Hospital and Cherry Hill High School West to honor military members and victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

2 THE CHERRY HILL SUN MAY 612, 2015

School taxes to increase for residents

By Freeholder Jeffrey Nash

Camden County
BikeShare
is
sponsoring a series of rides along
featured trails
throughout our
park system. This
spring we will be
highlighting the
Blackwood Rail
Trail in the Blackwood section of
Gloucester Township. Bring
your bike or use one of ours for
a great day in the outdoors.
This new program is a great
opportunity to get out of the
house and on a bike with your
fellow riders. Many municipalities are along the Camden
County Multi-Use Trail Network that provides riders with
hundreds of miles of recreational opportunities.
All rides will leave from the
Lakeland BikeShare repair facility located at 508 Lakeland
Road, Blackwood. Individual
rides are limited to 20 participants so pre-registration is required. Register for a ride by
emailing
us
at
ccbikeshare@camdencounty.co
m.
Please list the number of riders you are registering and the
date(s) you will be joining us in
your email. All rides will begin
promptly at 11:00 a.m. on May
10, June 6 and June 14.
The Camden County Freeholders have made advocating
and implementing more bike
trails and alternative means of
transportation throughout the
region a priority. This public
policy initiative is another opportunity for residents to get
out of their cars and onto a
bike in order to traverse
County trails and roadways.
Whether its a daily commute
to work or riding for recreation
this program provides a sustainable two wheel option for
residents.
The Camden County Bicycle

and
Multi-Use
Trail Master Plan
identified both onroad bike routes
and off-road trail
locations that together will create
an interconnected
trail
network
across
Camden
County. The trail
network provides
residents with new recreational opportunities, while
creating an alternative means
of transportation between destinations such as schools, shopping centers, parks and
recreation facilities, and historic sites, both within each
municipality and throughout
the county.
You can help give those who
dont have their own bicycle an
opportunity to ride by becoming a volunteer for Camden
County BikeShare. We are always looking for volunteers
with bicycle repair experience,
those willing to train others
and those willing to learn to repurpose the bikes. In addition
to experienced bicycle mechanics and trainers, BikeShare is
seeking volunteers to staff
their local distribution points.
If you are interested in volunteering your time to the Camden
County
BikeShare
program, or have a bicycle to
donate, please contact the Camden County Division of Environmental Affairs at (856)
858-5241 or email ccbikeshare@camdencounty.com.

budget at last weeks meeting.

Residents with an average assessed home of $223,500 will see
an $85.77 increase in their taxes
this year. This is an increase of
1.85 percent from 2014.
James Devereaux, assistant superintendent for business for
Cherry Hill Public Schools, said
the district was able to save taxpayers $1.2 million through a
bond refinancing in the fall. This
allowed the district to keep the
tax increase below 2 percent even
when the district had to make a
health-care adjustment increase
of $545,000.
The total budget for 2015-16 is
$182.68 million, a 2.51 percent increase over last year. Despite the
increase, Devereaux noted the
budget has increased just 6.85 percent since the 2008-09 school year.
The district did not receive any
additional help in state aid, which
remained flat at $12.95 million.
Thats less than the $16 million that we receive in 2008 and
2009, but more than the $7.9 million we received in 2010 and 2011,
Devereaux said.
The district is carrying over
$6.17 million from the 2014-15
budget to balance the 2015-16
budget. This is the same amount
of money the district carried over
from 2013-14.
The district is using more capital reserve money next year to
help balance the budget. About
$1.98 million of capital reserve is
being used, an increase of about
$900,000 from 2014-15.
Were leaving a little something on the table, just over $1
million, Devereux said. This
will be used to help 16-17 budget,
unless theres a compelling need
for it in the meantime.
There will not be any changes
to educational items or programs
next year. The district is also
adding four new teaching positions. Two are high school
teacher positions, one is an English language learner position
and the fourth is a student assistance counselor for the middle
schools.

Want cheaper health insurance?

Get healthy and start at a local farmers market
ts no secret that health insurance
is expensive. Thanks to Obamacare, health insurance is more
obtainable for Americans, but for most
of us, the cost of health insurance
especially through employer-sponsored plans continues to rise.
Theres nothing that we, or our employers, can do about it, unfortunately.
Now that we are required to have
health insurance, we cant just say,
screw it, Ill take a chance and have
no insurance. We are required to pay
up...and up and up and up.
So what can we do? What is in our
control? The obvious answer: Our
health.
The healthier we are, the less likely
we will need to use our health insurance. And the less we need to use our
health insurance, the more likely the
cost of our health insurance will go

down in the future.

Take a look at your health insurance plan, and at others that those
around you have. Most likely, there are
incentives for living a healthy lifestyle.
Join a gym, go three times a week, and
you get a discount on said gym membership. Why? Because the healthier
we are, the less it costs to insure us.
Getting healthier starts at home,
with the food we eat. And the food that
is available for us to eat is getting better all around us.
A great place to start for healthier
options is a local farmers market.

Dan McDonough Jr.

Theyre popping up everywhere, if

you havent noticed.
There are farm markets everywhere, and there are also countless
farm stands and farmers market special events that take place from spring
through fall.
Never been to a farmers market? Its
worth the trip. Not only can you buy
fresh, local produce that is often
cheaper than the supermarkets, you
can also get great ideas and lessons on
how to use the products you buy.
In addition to learning more about a
healthy lifestyle, and purchasing
goods that can help you do so, visiting
a local farmers market is also a nice
change-of-pace for the summer.
So get up, go out and support local
farmers and stores by visiting your
local farmers market. It will be well
worth the trip, now and in the future.

Strides with sustainability

Beck Middle School only New Jersey school to receive
SCA environmental education grant due to green initiatives
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
In 2010, one book served as the
springboard for sustainability at
Cherry Hills Beck Middle School.
That year, the school did a
Whole School Read program
where the entire school read a
book called Seedfolks. In the
book, a diverse urban community
gathers together to plant a community garden. The book inspired students to start their own
community garden at Beck.
Every year, were reading a
book and trying to tie these projects to our garden, said Ramona
Bregatta, a media specialist and
Cherry Hill Public Schools
Green Team liaison.
Six years later, Becks sustainability initiatives have been no-

ticed outside the Cherry Hill community.

The school has received a
$4,820 environmental education
grant from hygiene and forest
products company SCA. The
grant was awarded thanks to the
school-wide Working Together
to Save the Planet sustainability
initiative.
SCA awarded grants to only 15
schools nationwide this year.
Beck was the only school in New
Jersey to receive one. The grant
money is being used to enhance
sustainability projects each grade
level is working on at Beck this
year.
Bregatta was instrumental in
orchestrating the sustainability
projects each grade worked on
this year. She felt each of these
projects could have a long-term

benefit in the school community.

Last year, I proposed this plan
to our faculty at our end-of-the
year meeting, Bregatta said. Its
really something we started before we applied for the grant.
This year, the sixth grade at
Beck participated in an assignment named Plastic Police. The
assignment focused on reducing
one-time plastic use. The seventhgrade class project was named
Bugging Out, and looked at saving and preserving insects. The
eighth-grade
class
project,
named Air Ambassadors, focused on improving outdoor air
quality.
Within each grade level, the
students were divided into three
teams, each of which focused on a

group for kids ages 12 to 16.

From May 2 through May 4, the
group was scheduled to have a
three-day rehearsal with master
classes in vocal performance,
dancing and acting under the direction of Broadway artistic director Tony Parise. The rehearsal
prepared the group to perform
76 Trombones from The Music
Man as well as a performance in
the finale of the show with the entire cast of
the musical
Cabaret.
Reeves has loved theater and
dancing for most her life. She
began dancing at the age of 3 and
dipped into theater at 6 years old.
When she found out about Camp
Broadway, she was determined to
get one of the 62 available spots.
I had to go up to New York and

I went to an open call audition. I

sang Over the Rainbow, and we
had to do a dance number.
Following the audition, Reeves
had to wait for about two weeks to
find out if she made it. She said
the waiting period felt a lot
longer, though.
It was so nerve-wracking because I wanted to get in, she
said. But you had to wait for so
long.
The day Reeves got the news
about being selected was something she will never forget.
I was jumping up and down,
she said. I was really excited.
Reeves feels the most exciting
part of the trip is working with
professionals who work on Broadway.
I really love theater, she said.
I want to be on Broadway and become a big star.
Reeves has performed in multiple shows around South Jersey.
She was in the cast of Beck Mid-

dle Schools performance of

Alice in Wonderland in March
and also performed in the Haddonfield Plays and Players production of Number the Stars.
She has also previously performed in Les Miserables at the
Levoy Theater in Vineland.
Reeves said she shines when
under the bright theater lights.
She cant recall a time when she
was ever nervous about performing.
Im never nervous, she said.
My mom always thinks, Oh my
gosh, youre going to be nervous,
but I always tell her I got this.
Carnegie Hall is easily the
largest stage on which Reeves has
performed. She sees it as a large
step in her young theater career.
Im really excited to perform
on the same stage with some of
the most talented people alive and
perform in front of so many faces
and at Carnegie Hall in New York
City, she said.

Grammy-winning Julie Gold proud to play

for childhood piano teacher Rae Goldberg
A huge crowd came to hear
Grammy Award-winning composer Julie Gold perform at Congregation Mkor Shalom in Cherry Hill. It was especially significant for Gold, whose piano
teacher, Rae Goldberg, was in the
audience and came to sit by her,
once again, on her piano bench.
Gold says that Goldberg, who resides at Lions Gate in Voorhees,
is always in her heart and on
her piano bench. When Gold lived
in the Philadelphia area, Goldberg was her piano teacher from
ages 6 to 16.
Gold is proud to have four CDs
documenting her work over the
years titled Dream Loud, Try
Love, The Girl I Found and
Love is Love is Love. Currently
she is writing songs for the Oxford University Press for a series
that teaches English to elementary school children all over the
world. As the daughter of an im-

Grant will replace sewers at Kingston

GRANT
Continued from page 2
The district is using School Development Authority grants to
fund approximately $2 million
worth of capital improvements.
Most of the projects are fire
alarm and HVAC replacements at

multiple school buildings. Most of

the money for the projects will be
coming from capital reserve.
All but $24,000 of this $2 million will be offset by the use of
capital reserve funds, Devereaux
said.
The district has three SDA
grants remaining after 2015-16.
These grants will be used for
sewer replacement at Kingston

Elementary School and a large

storm water infiltration masonry
wall project at Cherry Hill East.
The school district also plans
to pay off both of its lease purchase agreements and a capital
improvement bond no later than
2018-19.
The lease purchase agreement
payments make up half of the
capital budget for the district.

specific aspect of the project.
Each team came up with an
idea of what they were going to
focus on, Bregatta said. In sixth
grade, one team focused on single-use water bottles, one focused
on plastic shopping bags and another focused on plastic packaging.
The money received from the
grant is being used in relation to
each of the three projects. For example, in connection with the
sixth-grade project, the school is
purchasing refillable water bottles and reusable shopping bags
to decrease the amount of plastic
used at the school.
To help with the seventh-grade
project, grant money is being allocated to purchase milkweed seed
and make Becks outdoor garden
friendlier for insects.
The school also plans to purchase new skateboard and bicycle
racks in connection with the
eighth-grade project in hopes
more kids will use those modes of
transportation in lieu of cars and
buses to get to school.
This years sustainability projects are just the tip of the iceberg
for Becks initiative. The school

recently received donations from

the Cherry Hill Education Foundation for larger recycle bins
after the school had a large increase in recycling.
We were finding the recycling
buckets were overflowing, Bregatta said. So we tripled the size
of the recycle bins.
CHEF also donated plastic baskets for the school to use during
lunch in hopes of eventually replacing Styrofoam trays.
The SCA grant is not the only
one Beck has received this year.
Beck was one of a few Cherry Hill
Schools receiving a Recyclebank
grant, where residents could donate Recyclebank points toward
their school. Beck received a
$3,000 grant from Recyclebank
and is using it to install a sculpture in the middle of the schools
garden.
Bregatta is impressed with
how much the students have embraced sustainability.
Every year, the kids are learning more about making our planet sustainable, Bregatta said.
With the students getting so involved in sustainability, the
school is hoping to get the community more involved as well.
Beck is looking for community
members and families to care for
the schools garden during the upcoming summer break. Those
