PCC, Your Perfect Cycling Companion

Batu Dam(ned), January 17th, 2010 By The English Nose

Preparing for the unexpected and expecting the worst as Batu Dam can be ravaged by the jungle in no time, we were quite
surprised to see how intact the trails are at Batu Dam. I’m not talking about the lake-side trail but the loop into the jungle.

Our motley crew of old-timers and new-timers had a good blast through all the single track Batu Dam has to offer. It’s pretty
much 100% single track.
The little rain had made the trails perfect and we took the anti-clockwise loop up to the 3rd river crossing before turning back.

I didn't expect to get in that far as at the start of that section, it was so overgrown, it's clear no bikers had been in there for
months. But once we go into the jungle, with the canopy, there the trail was, still intact and ride-able.

We pushed on (pushing and riding) all the way to the 3rd river, encountering many dead falls, (expected) but nothing
impassable.

During our R&R we decided to return the way we came and not risk the unknown of the complete loop. Past experiences with
wasps and dead falls full of rattan on that section put us off.

Perhaps it was these memories of rattan and wasps that prompted Patrick to leave after only a few km and not due to the fact
he was riding without helmet and gloves. They were having a weekend off.

2 of our riders did the "other section" after the river R&R and were out before us, so guess it was a clear run. Next time….

Good ride all in all. Usual leeches and grass cuts from passing undergrowth but fantastic single track and an absolute blast on
the way back out.

Kencana-SIC Bikeathon 2010

Come Sunday January 24th, Motor racing promoter Sepang International Circuit (SIC) will be organising an event of criterium for road and
mountain bikes.

Officially called Kencana-SIC Bikeathon 2010 and sponsored by Kencana Petroleum, the criterium race will run on the race track in the morning
while the mountain bike challenge will venture the rugged terrain around the circuit facility in the afternoon.

SIC wants to show it can organize sports and recreational events of any nature … be it motor racing, cycling, jogathon, cross country running,
orienteering and even futsal or even wedding ceremonies. In fact, they organized a world-class Concert just last year at the Sepang Circuit.

They are offering cash prizes up to RM5,000 as incentive for the competitors.
There are a few categories:
Open (19 above): 60km,
Junior (18 & below): 30km and
Veteran (Above 45): 25km

Unlike previous years, I couldn’t see any events for ladies though. From what I understand, forms & payment can be handed in one race day
itself.

Forms and details can be downloaded at:

http://www.sepangcircuit.com/files/u1/pdf/KSIC10-Bikeathon-Registration-Form.pdf

As such, there will no Sunday ride as most of PCC cyclists will be headed to Sepang to have a taste of what F1 drivers like Schumacher, Hamilton
and Button do on a daily basis…. let’s go riding on a World-class race track. If you haven’t raced a crit before, maybe you might want to give it a
try. For the rest of you who aren’t interested, head on to Sepang F1, please read on:

Bike Trail Etiquette

FROM VARIOUS SOURCES IN RELATION TO SHARED TRAILS AND NON BIKE

SPECIFIC TRAILS.

PERSONAL SAFETY
- Wear a brain bucket (yes..that’s a helmet) whenever you ride.
- Do not travel into remote areas without informing others
- Ride within your capabilities. Ensure that if you want to push your
limits, your buddies are around to support you.
- Know your bike and bring the necessary/essential spares.

RIGHT OF WAY IN RELATION TO OTHERS (NON RIDERS)

- Give way to non motorised trail users, i.e. hikers, horse riders, because
people judge all cyclist by my actions.
- Give way to motorised trail users, i.e. motor cross bikes etc, because
generally we will end up worse off in a an accident.
- Alert others when approaching. Get a bell, or “Excuse me” works quite
well.

RIGHT OF WAY IN RELATION TO OTHER RIDERS.

- Riders have the right of way. If you are pushing your bike, leave the
riding line open for others to go past.
- Rider up hill has the right of way.
- Allow faster riders to past

SPEED
- Approach turns and bends in anticipation that there’s someone there.
- Make your presence know when approaching someone or any turns.

IMPACT ON THE TRAIL

- Leave the wildlife and fauna alone. Magic mushrooms are bad for you.
- Stay on designated trails and avoid destroying vegetation if possible
- Don’t take short cuts over/around technical sections. If you can’t ride
it, walk it.
- Learn how to use your front brakes so that you minimise skidding your
rear wheel. If you refuse to learn, then ride only in bike parks where
people are paid to maintain the trails.
- Do not litter. Take out whatever you take in.
- Practise minimal impact riding, take only photos and memories with
you.

FUN
- You are to have loads of fun, talk lots of cog, and make good friends on
your ride.
- Develop of sense of humour. Some people say it’s good for the soul.
