social, political, and economic issues facing our nation and the world.
w
w

Creative thinking: Engineering is , y its very nature, a creative profession Engineers

have limitless opportunities to be ingenious , inventive and creative. Creativity is
practically an essential ingredient of engineering. Besides the above, Engineers
get job satisfaction, challenging work and prestige.
Major Engineer Disciplines:

Electronics and communications Engineering: This course has a great demand for
students. Apart from jobs in electronic industry, students can easily get absorved
in computer hardware and software industry.

Electronics deal with the design of circuits and electric devices to provide, amplify,
detect or rectify electrical signals. Electronics is rapidly changing and becoming
increasingly important because of new advances in microelectronics important
because of new advances in microelectronics. Our standard of living has

m
significantly improved due to the advent of transistors, semi-conductors and
Integrated Circuits(ICs).

co
Communications involve a broad spectrum of applications from consumer
entertainment to military radar.
g.
ng
Recent advances in personal communication system(e.g., cellular telephones) and
video conferencing along with technological advances in lasers and fibre optics are
bringing about a revolution in the communications field.
ye

Electrical Engineering: There are a number of jobs available for electrical engineers
.m

in the field of electric power generation, transmission and distribution, besides

they are involved in manufacturing industry in the production of electrical and
electronic parts and many types of switchgear and controls. Power engineers are
w

involved with conventional generation systems such as hydroelectric, steam and

w

nuclear as well as alternative generation systems from solar, wind and fuel cells.
w

Controls Engineers design systems that control automated operations and

processes. Control systems generally compare a measured quantity to a desired
standard and make whatever adjustments are needed to bring the measured
quantity as close as possible to the desired standard/Instrumentation. This
involves the use of electronics devise, particularly transducers, to measure
parameters like pressure, temperature, flow rate, speed, acceleration, voltage and
current. Instrumentation engineers not only conduct such measurements
themselves, they also take part in processing, storing and transmitting the data
they collect.

Mechanical Engineering: There is hardly any industry which does not use
Mechanical Engineers. Mechanical Engineering is grouped into the three broad
areas. Energy involves the production and transfer of energy as well as the
conversion of energy from on form to another. Mechanical Engineers in this area
design and operate power plants, study the economical combustion of fuels,
design processes to convert heat energy into mechanical energy and create ways
to put that mechanical energy to work, Mechanical Engineering in energy and
create ways to put that mechanical energy to work, Mechanical Engineers in
energy-related fields also design heating, Ventilation and air-conditioning systems
for our homes, offices, commercial buildings and industrial plants.

Design of structures and Motion of Mechanical Systems: Mechanical Engineering in

these areas contribute to the design of automobiles, trucks, tractors, trains,
airplanes and even interplanetary space vehicles. They design lathes, milling
machines, grinders and drill presses used in the manufacture of goods.

Manufacturing : The third area of Mechnical Engineering study, is the process of

m
converting raw materials into a final product. To take this process from start to
finish, a variety of equipment, machinery and tools is bound to be needed.

co
Designing and building these requisite equipment and machines are what the
manufacturing areas of Mechanical Engineering entails.

g.
Civil Engineering: With the present focus on infrastructure development such as
roads, pots and transport facilities, the Civil Engineering will be most sought after.
ng
Structural Engineers : Design all types of structures, bridges, building, dams,
ye

tunnels, tanks, power plants, tansmission line towers, offshore drilling platforms
and space satellites. Their primary responsibility is to analyze the forces that a
.m

structure would encounter and develop a design to withstand those forces.

Transportation Engineers: are concerned with the safe and efficient movement of
w

both people and goods. They thus play key roles in the design of high ways and
streets, harbours and ports, mass transit systems, airports and railroads.
w
w

Environmental Engineers: are responsible for controlling preventing and elimination

air, water and land pollution. To these ends, they are typically involved in the
design and operation of water distribution systems, water treatment facilities,
sewage treatment plants, garbage disposal systems, air quality control
programmes recycling and reclamation projects, toxic waste clean up projects and
pesticide control programmes.

Water sources: is an engineering specialty focused on water related problems and

issues. The work of engineers in this area includes the operation of water
availability an delivery systems, the evaluation of potential new water sources,
harbor and river development, floor control, irrigation and drainage projects,
coastal protection and the construction and maintenance of hydroelectric power
facilities.

Geo-technical Engineers: analyze the properties of soil and rocks over which
structures and facilities are built. Their work is thus vital to the design and
contraction of earth structures(dams and levees), foundation and buildings,
offshore platforms, tunnels and drams.

Construction Engineers: Use both technical and management skills to plan and
build facilities such as buildings, bridges, tunnels and dams. They are generally
responsible for such projects from start of finish: estimating construction costs,
determining equipment and personnel needs, supervising the construction, and
once completed, operating the facility until the client assumes responsibility.

Computer Engineering : This is arguably the hottest branch with a wide number of

m
opportunities in India and abroad. The only field where A.P. graduates are
accepted as top class globally.

co
On one side is Computer Sciences, primarily concerned with theory, design and
implementation of software. It is a true engineering discipline, even though the
g.
product is a intangible computer programme. On the other side is Computer
Engineering, primarily concerned with firmware (the micro code that controls
ng
processors) and hardware(the processors themselves, as well as entire
computers).
ye

The primary technical areas that Computer Engineers are involved with are: Digital
.m

system ‘s computer architecture, parallel and distributed computing, software

engineering, algorithms, programming languages, compilers, operating systems,
computer networks, artificial intelligence, image processing, natural language
w

processing and bio-metrics.

w

Chemical Engineering: If you are innovative and like processes, there is nothing
w

like this branch for you. Chemical Engineers combine their engineering training
with knowledge of chemistry to transform the laboratory work of chemists into
commercial realities. They are most frequently involved in designing and operating
chemical production and manufacturing facilities that use chemicals. The work of
chemical Engineers can be seen in a wide variety of products that affect our daily
lives, including plastics, building materials, food products, pharmaceuticals,
synthetic rubber, synthetic fibers and petroleum products.

Bio-technology: It is the most happening branch of the new millennium. If you can
go through the hassles of learning any number of new subjects, this branch may
be the most suitable one. While technology generally aims to create tools to
empower man, bio-technology aims to change man himself, to better equip him to
the changing world.

Bio-technology is the application of advances made in the biological sciences,

especially involving the science of genetics. The advent of G.M.(Genetically
Manipulated) seeds has brought a revolution in Agriculture. Bio-technology has
helped improve food quality ,quantity and processing. It also has applications in
manufacturing, where simple cells and proteins can be manipulated to produce
chemicals. But biro-technology is most important for is application sin health and
medicine. Though genetic engineering the controlled alteration of genetic material-
scientists have been able to create new medicines such as synthetic Insulin. Bio-
Informatics helps to create huge genome databases, an example of wide
applications of computers in bio-technology.

Engineering job functions: another way to understand the engineering profession is

m
to examine engineers from the perspective of the work they do or the job
functions they perform .For example , an electrical engineer could also be referred

co
to as a design engineer , a Test Engineer , Test Engineer or a Development
Engineer, depending of the nature of his or her work .
