Questions 26-30

When children are sick, most parents turn to doctors for help. They would probably head to the
nearest clinic in the neighbourhood. However, it is helpful if you have some understanding, both
of the health needs of children and of the services which are available to meet those needs.
Firstly, when choosing the doctor, you need a doctor who is easy to get to see. Illness during
childhood is often acute, so you need to make sure that your child does not have to wait a long
time for an appointment and can be seen urgently if necessary.
There are times when you need a doctor to make house calls if your child is too sick to be taken
to the clinic or hospital. The most important thing is you have to be comfortable with your childs
doctor. You need a doctor whom you feel you can talk freely to and discuss your childs health.
If you are uncomfortable with your childs doctor, you should consider a different doctor. You need
to remember that the health and well-being of your child may depend on your doctor, so choose
someone you like and have confidence with.
Parents often wonder when they should consult a doctor. Whenever you are worried about your
childs health, you should see a doctor. Even if the child does not seem ill, unexplained fever, or
persistent systems such as cough and vomiting, maybe reasons for seeking advice. Diarrhoea,
particularly if accompanied by vomiting, may be serious in babies and young children because
they become dehydrated and this demands medical attention.
Many doctors would rather meet their parents in their clinic where all facilities are ready at hand,
than make a home visit. However if your child is too sick to be taken to hospital, you need to ask
your doctor to see your child at home.
It is important for your child to see a doctor when they are ill or when parents are worried about
their health. This is the reason children need to have regular, routine health checks for
assessment of developmental progress, and for early detection of any disabilities. These routine
health checks help to provide an opportunity for the parent to discuss any health queries or
anxieties with the doctor. If a problem is found, it can be dealt with at an early stage. The family
doctor may arrange a child to attend an outpatient consultation or be admitted for treatment. This
way, the doctor could help the child to recover as early intervention is vital to help the child to
progress better and be healthier in life.
We cannot escape from the fact that parents need to seek medical help and care for their
children. Each child is different. Every child has his or her own different health problems. So
routine check-ups are crucial. In Malaysia, there are many clinics that provide health care for
children. The government has built clinics in almost every district and township. There are doctors
who even visit patients in most remote areas. So, there is no excuse for parents not to take better
care of their children.
