PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY:
A. Work of this Section includes:
1. Exterior freestanding site ID signs

2. Exterior freestanding parking ID signs
3. Exterior parking space ID
4. Exterior building and canopy-mounted dimensional graphics
5. Exterior freestanding, portable poster holder (Windmaster®)
6. Interior suspended area ID
7. Interior wall-mounted dimensional letters
8. Interior freestanding collection ID signs
9. Interior wall-mounted room, office and area ID
10. Interior regulatory and fire/life/safety signs
11. Applied vinyl graphics
12. Fabrication, installation and sign permits for all signs in this package.
13. Costs related to Artwork shall be considered a part of the Work for this Section.
1.2 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
A. Provide all materials and labor necessary to complete this package as specified.
B. Standards:
1. Comply with applicable standards of sign products industry and construction

industry for selection of materials, fabrication of components, assembly, and installation
of the system, except to the extent more explicit or stringent requirements are indicated.
2. Use only personnel thoroughly skilled and experienced with the materials, technologies
and methods for fabrication and installation of signage specified.
3. Work performed and materials furnished shall be of the highest quality in every respect
and, unless otherwise specified, materials and equipment shall be new and of the latest
design.
4. The Owner shall reserve the right to reject any shop drawings, samples or other submittals,
as well as any finished product or installation that does not meet the standard of quality
established. Any such decision will be considered final and not subject to recourse
C. Sign Contractor Qualifications:
1. Sign Contractors must be experienced with the sign types, materials and technologies
specified in this package. Sign Contractor must have completed fabrication and installation
of sign programs similar to this one in terms of project scale and design complexity, and
which have resulted in construction with a record of successful in-service performance.

1.3 SUBMITTALS:
A. Schedule: Sign Contractor is responsible for providing all submittals in a timely manner,
allowing sufficient time for review (by Owner, General Contractor, etc), revisions and re-
submittals without jeopardizing the sign installation schedule set by the Owner. Any delays in
the submittal process will have to be made up by Sign Contractor during fabrication.
B. Order of Submissions:
1. Shop Drawings & Color Samples:

- Must be approved before any samples or signs are fabricated.
2. Sign Samples & Letterspacing Templates

- Production to commence after approval of shop drawings & color samples.
- Submission prior to approval of shop drawings & color samples will be grounds for
rejection without review.
3. Written Warranty & Braille Certification to be submitted to Graphics Consultant prior to

sign installation.
C. Submit the following:
1. Shop Drawings:
a. Submit (4) four hardcopy sets of shop drawings for review by Graphics Consultant.

b. Sign Contractor’s drawings must be at minimum 17” x 11” format to be accepted.
c. Sign Contractor’s drawings must include necessary product data and mounting details
for each sign in this package. Indicate sign layout, sign messages, letter forms, spacing,
dimensions, elevations, and connection details for each sign type. Indicate sign
locations and connection to mounting surface.
d. Because Anderson Krygier’s hardcopy drawings and/or digital files will be used to
produce shop drawings, samples and signs for this project, the selected Sign Contractor
will be required to sign Anderson Krygier’s Drawing Use Areement which includes the
following stipulations:
Intent: Anderson Krygier’s drawings are considered intent drawings; no part has been
engineered. All descriptions of materials and their uses are included only to describe
design intent and best estimate of how to proceed. Some interpretation may be
required of Sign Contractor in order to produce a finished product.
Copyright & Use: Unless otherwise indicated, all images, sign designs, icons and
symbols for this project are copyrighted by Anderson Krygier, Inc. and that copyright
information must remain intact on all Sign Contractor submittals. Images may not be
copied, reproduced, linked-to, distributed, re-formatted, displayed, modified, adapted
or used in any manner, except as a one-time use file for this sign program. Sign
Contractor warrants that the use of such information will not violate any party’s
proprietary rights. Any drawings submitted without the AK copyright intact will be
rejected without review. Any resulting schedule delays must be made up by Sign
Contractor during fabrication.

Changes to Drawings: Any changes made to Anderson Krygier’s original drawings

must be distinctly indicated on each page. Enlarged, bold or unique type and bubbled
areas are acceptable indicators. Indicators must be clearly visible and consistent
throughout the drawings. If submitted shop drawings reflect changes which are not
distinctly indicated, the drawings will be rejected without review. Any resulting
schedule delays must be made up by Sign Contractor during fabrication.
Sign Location Numbers & Sign Type Designations: Sign location numbers and Sign
Type designations shown in Sign Contractor’s submittals must match Anderson
Krygier’s documents. Alterations are not acceptable. Any submittals which include
altered sign location numbers or sign type designations will be rejected without
review. Any resulting schedule delays must be made up by Sign Contractor during
fabrication.
2. Color Samples
Submit for approval a quantity of three (3) 8” wide x 10” high color samples for each
of the specified color matches.
Color samples shall be submitted on the same substrate(s) and with the same method(s)
of application as the final product will be.
3. Sign Samples
Sign Contractor must submit the following to Graphics Consultant for review and approval
prior to producing any signs for this package. All samples to be full size unless otherwise
noted.
a. Sign Type E/A-1 Top 24” of sign showing assembly and at least one letter.
b. Sign Type E/B TBD
c. Sign Type E/G-1 Letter A

The Owner and Graphics Consultant reserve the right to disassemble any submittal and to
subject items to any test necessary to determine strength or character without being
responsible for any damage to the item caused thereby. Samples will be retained by
Graphics Consultant.

4. Letterspacing Templates
Provide a full-size paper output for all messages produced in dimensional letters.
5. Written Warranty
Provide a written warranty indicating all work of this Bid Lot will be free from defects in
material and workmanship for a period of five (5) years after Owner acceptance, and that
for a period of five (5) years after Owner acceptance repairs/replacements of any defects
shall be performed in a timely manner and at no expense to the Owner. Fabricator to
provide all warranty information to Graphics
Consultant upon completion of installation.
6. Braille Certification
a. Sign Contractor must provide written documentation that all Braille translations
included on the signs provided for this project have been evaluated by the American
Foundation for the Blind, and are, in their opinion, correct and compliant with the
current Americans With Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) as published
by the Department Of Justice.
1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE:
A. Typography:
1. Copy on detail drawings attached to these specifications are generic and intended for
layout and spacing only. Actual copy for all signs is listed in the Message Schedule. A shop
drawing submittal is required for approval of alternate letter size or other layout changes
as a result of an exceptionally long message or other special condition.
2. Stated dimensions on the drawings shall take precedence over scaled dimensions.
3. Serious conflicts between stated and scaled dimensions must be resolved with Graphics
Consultant prior to fabrication.
4. Letter spacing shall be as shown on drawings. Special artwork for icons and symbols is
available as a digital file from Graphics Consultant.
5. Sign Contractor is responsible for purchasing all required typefaces.
6. Letterforms are in the typeface Frutiger Roman and Frutiger Bold.
7. Correct use of the apostrophe is required. Any signs displaying a foot mark instead
of an apostrophe will be rejected.

B. Raised letters and Braille:
1. This sign program includes raised letters and Braille produced using a photopolymer
process and with applied letters with rastor Braille. The method required for each sign
is specified under sign type descriptions and in sign drawings.
2. For any exterior applications, raised letters and Braille shall be produced with 1/8” solid
Photopolymer, JET300EX brand (by JET USA).
3. All Braille shall be Grade 2 Braille to meet guidelines established in the Americans with
Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) as adopted by the Department of Justice.
Placement of the Braille shall be located as shown on drawings. The fabricator is
responsible for proper use of Grade 2 Braille in terms of size, placement, and spelling,
including proper contractions.
4. Sign Contractor must provide written documentation that the Braille translations included
on the signs fabricated and installed for this project have been evaluated by the American
Foundation for the Blind, and are, in their opinion, correct and compliant with the ADAAG.
5. Braille on photopolymer signs shall always remain the sign background color. On other
substrates, including 3Form, Braille is clear.
6. If any recent governmental promulgations have altered the use or placement of raised
letters and Braille, so as to impact the accompanying drawings, those new uses shall be
reflected and clearly indicated in fabricator’s shop drawings.
E. Inks and Paints:
1. All inks and paints shall be compatible with the surface on which they are applied and
recommended by the manufacturer of the ink or paint. All inks and paints used shall be of
a type containing ultraviolet inhibitor to protect against fading and discoloration. All inks
and paints shall be evenly applied and without roughness, pinholes, scratches, orange
peeling, dust, application marks, etc.
2. Workmanship in connection with finishes and formation of letters shall conform to the
highest standards of the trade and shall be acceptable to Graphics Consultant. All interior
painted surfaces to have a semi-matte or “Eggshell” finish, unless otherwise indicated.
3. Color Matches: Provide Matthews Brand paint finishes, color matched to the following:
1. “Black” Opaque Bright Black

3. “Silver” Matthews #MP18076
4. “Charcoal” Matthews #MP18213
5. “Yellow” PMS 389C
6. “Shaw Blue” PMS 3005C

PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 MATERIALS AND FABRICATION:
A. General:
1. All materials shall be new stock, free from defects impairing strength, durability and
appearance. All fabrication and installation shall be in accordance with the highest
standards of the trade. All signs and components shall be complete and free from visual
and structural/mechanical flaws.
2. Sign material laminates shall utilize proper adhesives. Sign Contractor is responsible for
considering the surfaces being adhered as well as the environmental conditions the sign
will be placed in when determining appropriate adhesives. Lamination must be smooth,
consistent and free of bubbles, bulging and foreign matter, and guaranteed not to
delaminate nor cause discoloration or deterioration of sign materials. Adhesives shall
never be visible on completed, installed signs.
B. LEED / Sustainability Considerations:
1. Where possible, select products that are extracted, manufactured and assembled within a
500 mile radius of the project site.
2. Where possible, select products that contain recycled content. Products with post-
consumer recycled content are preferred.
C. Vinyl Graphics:
1. All vinyl is pressure sensitive vinyl, 3M Brand Scotchcal or Gerber. Vinyl cutting shall be
executed in such a manner that all edges and corners of finished forms are true and clean.
Cut vinyl forms with rounded positive or negative corners, nicked, cut or ragged edges, etc.
will not be accepted.
2. Vinyl application shall be smooth, consistent and free of bubbles, bulging and foreign
matter.
3. Align letter forms to maintain a base line parallel to the sign format. Margins must be
maintained as specified by sign type diagrams.
4. All edges of letter forms shall be sharp and clean with no edge buildup or bleeding. All
surfaces or letter forms shall be without pinholes.
D. Hardware:
1. Provide hardware in sizes, types and finishes shown and specified. Where hardware is
indicated but not explicitly specified, submit hardware sizes, types and finishes to Graphics
Consultant for review and selection.

E. Dimensional Letters:
1. All dimensional letter forms shall be accurately laser cut, water jet cut or precision cast;
materials and finishes as specified. Letters shall have square corners; letter face and edges
shall be straight, smooth and free of cutting marks and other imperfections. If painted,
apply a clear coat of semi-matte lacquer to protect finish.
2. Unless otherwise noted, dimensional letters shall be flush mounted as recommended by

the manufacturer for the specific installation conditions. Letter spacing shall be as shown
on drawing. Submit full size letter spacing template to Graphics Consultant for approval
prior to fabrication.
F. Metal Finishes:
1. Standard metal finishes in this package include: clear anodized aluminum.

2. Metal shall not be clear coated.

G. Acrylic Signs:
1. Unless otherwise indicated, acrylic surfaces shall be “non-glare.”
2. Where “non-glare” acrylic is indicated, use ACRYCAST cell cast acrylic manufactured by
Calsak Plastics.
3. Sign construction shall be as indicated on attached construction drawings.
4. Sign finish to be semi-matte. All sign surfaces (including edges) must be smooth and free
of scratches, gouges, cutting marks or other imperfections. Incorporate ultraviolet
inhibitor into sign materials to produce maximum color stability.
5. Sign material laminates shall utilize proper adhesives. Sign fabricator is responsible for
considering the surfaces being adhered as well as the environmental conditions the sign
will be placed in when determining appropriate adhesives. Lamination must be smooth,
consistent and free of bubbles, bulging, and foreign matter, and guaranteed not to
delaminate nor cause discoloration or deterioration of any materials used in fabrication.
Adhesives must never be visible on completed, installed signs.
6. Align letter forms to maintain a base line parallel to the sign format. Margins must be
maintained as described and/or illustrated on sign type drawings.
7. All edges of letter forms shall be sharp and clean with no edge buildup or bleeding.
All surfaces of letter forms shall be without pinholes.
H. Wrisco®:
1. Material shall be Wrisco® brand clear satin anodized finish aluminum laminate material;
call 415.784.0700 for product and ordering information.

I. Painting and Finishing
1. All inks and paints shall be evenly applied in a clean environment. Finished products must
not have roughness, pinholes, scratches, orange peeling, dust, application marks, etc.
Workmanship in connection with finishes and formation of letters shall conform to the
highest standards of the trade and shall be acceptable to the owner.
2. All etched materials shall be paint filled or left as uncolored metal as specified. Graphic
images shall be etched into the substrate using a photochemical process.
All fills shall be of durable paint fill. Fills shall not chip nor lose paint.
J. Screen Printing:
1. Disposition of color shall be even and opaque.
2. There shall be 100% fidelity between film positives and screen. Provide 100% film positive,
emulsion side up and clean.
3. Double strikes of screened artwork which show as double images, faint or fuzzy line and
edge quality shall not be accepted if visible when viewed from 5 feet or the normal
viewing distance, whichever is closer.

4. Screen artwork shall not noticeably deviate from the film positives in line weight.
5. The fabricator shall determine the optimum mesh size for screen printing.
K. Adhesives:
1. 3M clear VHB is the approved adhesive for laminating sign panels to offset panels.

2. For all applications, adhesive layers shall be as thin as reasonably possible.
3. Adhesives shall be clear unless otherwise indicated.
4. Adhesive products shall never be visible on finished, installed signs.
5. For adhesives which are to be applied at the project site (interior), select products that
meet or exceed VOC limits of South Coast Air Quality District Rule #1168.

L. Typography

the end of this Section. A shop drawing submittal is required for approval of alternate
letter size or other layout changes as a result of an exceptionally long message or other
special condition.
2. Stated dimensions on drawings shall take precedence over scaled dimensions. In case of
gross contradictions or ambiguities, seek clarification from Graphics Consultant.
3. There is one family of typefaces used in this sign program. Alternate letter forms will
be unacceptable. Letter spacing shall be as shown on drawings.

a. Sign Materials: Sign cabinet and base structure each have a .125” thick
aluminum “skin” over a skeletal matrix of extruded and
fabricated aluminum channels, angles and square tubes.
Cabinet faces (2) have waterjet cut letterforms with
translucent white acrylic lasercut letters placed into forms
from behind.
Letters are secured with silicone adhesive from back
surface and fastened as necessary to prevent letters from
being pushed into cabinet.
Sign cabinet has internal LED illumination.
Concrete base and all required fastening provisions for
base-to-ground and sign-to-base interface.

b. Size: Sign Type E/A-1: 1’-10” wide x 10’-0” high, O.A.
Sign Type E/A-2: 5’-11” wide x 3’-0” high, O.A.
c. Graphics: Typeface is Frutiger Black.

7. Sign Type E/G-1: Exterior Dimensional Letters and Rail: Anacostia
a. Sign Materials: Letters are laserjet cut from 1” thick acrylic,

faced with .032” Wrisco® clear anodized aluminum
veneer; letter edges and backs are painted.

PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 INSTALLATION
A. General:
1. All sign installations shall attempt to meet the established guidelines of the Americans
with Disabilities Act as well as any other relevant guidelines adopted into State or local
code, such as ANSI, UBC or IBC.
2. The supplier is responsible for staking all sign locations and field verifying with
contracting officer before installing signs.
3. The supplier is responsible for securely installing all signs. When the type of mounting
is not otherwise specified, all signs shall be permanently mounted.
4. Install all items as described in specifications and shown in elevation drawings provided.
If site conditions do not allow for sign placement as described herein, seek advice from
Graphics Consultant. Check all items for correct placement.
5. Make all provisions necessary and take special precautions to protect and prevent
damage to Owner’s property. Any items damaged shall be restored to the original
condition and the supplier charged with the expense thereof.
6. All wall-mounted sign panels are to be installed in such a way that wall surfaces are not
damaged. Use 3M pressure sensitive double-sided vinyl tape and/or screws as specified.
7. Installers shall maintain a clean work area and keep walkways clear of debris. All
crating materials must be removed from project site at the end of each work day and
when installation is complete.
3.2 CLEANING AND PROTECTION
A. General:
1. Clean signs after installation. Remove any fingerprints and ensure that installation
adhesives are not be visible on any exposed sign surfaces. Signs may be cleaned with
soap, detergents and other similar cleaners without damage to the sign surface. Touch
up any scratched surfaces as necessary.
