ApJUSTING EQUIPMENT
Where practical, valves should be set using an accumulator large
enough to accurately read and set blowdown. For a -4 orifice up
to 4000 psig [27579 KPAG], -6 orifice up to 1410 psig [9722 KPAGJ
and a -a orifice up to 600 psig [4137 KPAG], a four cubic foot
[ 0.113 m3 J accumulator is recommended. The supply pipe to the
valva should be the same size as the inlet or larger and not more
than 10" [254 mm] long.
For all other valves, or if an accumulator is not available for
the sizes listed above, the blowdown may be set using the
following method.
Turn the blowdown adjusting bolt all the way in until it just
touches the guide, then turn it out the number of turns listed in
the table.

SEAT LAKAGB

5.1

GENERAL
If the valve leaks after repair check the following:
5.1.1

Full and even seating of nozzle and guide.

5.1.2

Foreign particles trapped between the seat and nozzle.

If any are found they may have damaged the seat, making
it necessary to replace it.

5.1. 3

Correct seat material for the valve set pressure.

If items l and 2 reveal no evident seat leakage source, the

procedures described in Section 5.2 may be used to eliminate seat
leakage. Section 5.2 applies only to teflon seated -4, -6, or -a
orifice Type 81's with nameplate set pressures that do not exceed
300 psig [2068 KPAGJ.
5.2

SEAT SEALING PROCEOYBES

Heat the valve for 15 to 30 minutes in a oven preheated to 2S03000F [121-1490). A concentrated heat source such as a heat gun
or open flame must not be used.
After the valve has air-cooled to room temperature, retest per

improved, the valve should be disassembled and the seat replaced.

6,0

SET PRESSURE CIIANGE

If the set pressure is changed more than ~ 5% from the nameplate set
pressure, the spring, spring washers, spring bonnet, guide plugs and seat
may also have to be changed. Consult the factory or refer to the soft
goods repair kit, the table in section 3.3 and spring chart 03.0079.

lHLE;/piSCBABQE PIPING

Inlet and Discharge piping is very important for proper valve

performance. The piping to the safety valve should meet the general
requirements set forth in the American Petroleum Institute Recommended
Practice 525, Part II. This document recommends inlet piping pressure
losses not exceed 3\ of the set pressure when the valve is flowing. It
also recommends the discharge piping be properly braced to withstand
reactive thrust forces when the valve relieves and the valve be properly
supported to withstand system vibration.
The discharge pipe for gas valves (Type 81,63) should be large enough
so back pressure is not greater than 10% of set pressure when the valve
is relieving. Higher back pressures may cause the valve to rapid cycle
or chatter.
For liquid service valves (Type 61P), the back pressure may exceed 10'
without affecting valve performance . The liquid relief capacity will be
reduced however, since it is determined by the pressure drop across the
valve.
5.0

PRESSQRIZING THE VALVE

Pressure can .be applied to valve inlet as system pressure increases or

by opening block valve after system has attained operating pressures.
There should be no leakage at any pressure below 95' of the nameplate set
pressure for valves with a set pressure of lOP psig [689 kPa] or greater.
For valves set at 50 psi; [345 kPa] to 99 psi; [663 kPa], there should
be no leakage below 90% of set and for valves set below SO psi; [345
kPa], no leakage below 85% of set.
6.0

SLOWDOWN APJUSTMENT IReseat Pressure>

All Type 81, 83 and 86 gas and steam service valves are factory set for
7% blowdown for set pressures 100 psig and above. For set pressure 50
psig [345 kPa] to 99 psig [663 kPa], the blowdown is 10% ~nd for valves
'set below 50 psig [345 kPa], the blowdown is 20%.
The valve can be adjusted for blowdowns shorter than these values, but
valves may not be tight at reseat.
Very short blowdowns should be
avoided because inlet piping pressure losses may cause valve chatter.
To make the blowdown shorter on Type 81, 83 or 86 valves, turn the
To make the blowdown longer, turn
blowdown adjustment screw l!f
adjustment screw 2:l!.I Adjustments should be made in l/4 turn increments.
The Type 8lP liquid service valves do not have blowdown adjustment.
Blowdown will vary for different relieving conditions.
If a small
portion of the rated flow is relieved, it will close at the same pressure
it opened. If a major portion of the rated flow is relieved, the valve
will go into full lift and have a longer fixed blowdown of about 20%.

BACK PBESSURI
The Type 81, 83 and 86 gas steam service valves are NOT balanced for back
pressure. If the valves are connected to a pressurized discharge header,
the set pressure will change on a one for one basis. For example, if the
pressure in the header is 10 psig [68.9 kPa], the set pressure of the
valve will increase 10 psig [68.9 kPa].
The Type BlP liquid service valve 1 balanced for back pressure.
liquid service valves have a vent hole in the side of the bonnet.

All

In no case will any of the valves open and flow backwards if the pressure
at the valve outlet is greater than at the inlet.
8.0

QTHE~

USES OF A SA[ETX BELIEF VALVE

A safety relief valve should be used only to protect a system from

overpressure during a pressure upset. It should not be used as a control
valve that is required to operate continuously. It should not be used
as a pipe fitting or transition piece in a piping system.
9.0

MAINTENANCE

Maintenance should be performed on a regular basis. Depending on service

conditions, an inspection/maintenance on an annual basis is the
recommended maximum time interval.
Maintenance manuals for these valves are available without charge from
the factory.
