Write and edit press releases


Media database management
Work directly with media to coordinate interviews and story opportunities
Media tracking
Plan special events, coordinate promotions and learn the day-to-day workings of a PR
firm
Participate in publicity planning and strategy sessions
Prepare, organize and distribute press clippings and other press materials
Pitch local media
Write additional press materials, publication pieces, etc.
Other projects as assigned, based on department needs and interns interests

Description of compensation including amount, how and when paid and treatment of taxes, as
well as, facilities, and supervision to be provided by the worksite organization to the student:
** Unpaid internship
Units of credit to be earned: 3 (require a minimum of 45 hours of work per credit)
Time frame of internship: 13 weeks
Start date: Monday, Jan. 26, 2015
End date: Wednesday, April 29, 2015
Weekly schedule: Monday & Wednesday, 10 a.m. 5 p.m.
Grading
Intern: The student should follow the syllabus provided by the instructor.

Supervisor: The supervisor should write an evaluation of the student and send it to the
instructor by semesters end. It should be signed and on company letterhead. This letter should
verify the number hours the student has worked and give a descriptive evaluation of the quality
of work provided by the student during the internship. A copy of the evaluation should be
provided to the student. Please note that students will be allowed to view the evaluation.
Instructors access to evaluate the student
Early in the internship the student should coordinate and the organization should welcome an
onsite visit at the worksite for the instructor. The onsite visit should include a tour of the facility
and the students workspace, and an opportunity to meet and talk briefly with the supervisor.
Student Interns Goals and Objectives (including project plan)
Goal: Learn the daily functions of a PR firm
Objective: Attend 7+ client meetings and participate on phone calls
Objective: Track media daily and create media clippings of any mention of clients
Goal: Improve ability to write press releases
Objective: Write 5+ press releases for various clients to practice writing format
Objective: Read/ edit 10+ press releases written by other employees to receive direction on
formatting and word choice
Project plan:
Intern will work mainly on the Spring Beer Festival event held by Capitol City Brewing
Company in April. To plan and gain attention for the event she will:
Draft media advisories
o Send out to various publications and media outlets
Write and pitch blogs about the event
Invite media to the Spring Beer Festival
Attend the event, take pictures
After the event:
o Track media coverage
o Write press release for any media that could not attend the event
Weather emergency plan and absenteeism policy
If the government is closed due to weather, the office will be closed as well.
Intern must contact the office as soon as possible by email or phone if she cannot come in due to
sickness or emergency. As she will be interning for 182 hours (26 days, 7 hours per day), 47
hours more than the required 135 hours, she will not need to make up the hours if she is absent.
If her absences exceed the number of days needed to meet 135 hours, she will make them up
another day during the workweek.
Rights of the worksite in supervising the student
The supervisor has the right to direct the students work, hours, discipline, and termination.
Process of termination
Student and supervisor should share concerns with the instructor before taking action to
terminate the internship. The student should have permission of the instructor before
terminating participation in the internship. The instructor may remove the intern from the
placement.
