5.22.1.1 Faying Surface. (AWS D1.

1 2000)
The separation between faying surfaces of plug and slot welds, and of butt joints landing on
a backing, shall not exceed 1/16 in. (2 mm). Where irregularities in rolled shapes occur after
straightening do not permit contact within the above limits, the procedure necessary to
bring the material within these limits shall be subject to the approval of the Engineer. The
use of filler plates is prohibited except as specified on the drawings or as specially approved
by the Engineer and made in accordance with 2.13.
4.5.1 Fabrication Panel Tolerance (APP-1208-GEF-199)
General Note Drawing APP-1208-SC-100:
- Table 3.2.1 of the drawing specifies a panel wall thickness of 3-0, +1/4, -0
for the
RC / SC connection panels.
- Table 3.2.2 of the drawing specifies the panel wall thickness of 3- 0 +/- inch
for all other panels.
- Note below Table 3.2.2 that states the targeted panel wall thickness along the
panel edges is 3-0, + , -0 for the panels other than the RC/SC connection
panels. However, the fabricator is not required currently to meet the targeted
values.
Based on the above, assuming that panels are centered on each other, the largest mismatch
between a panel face plates would be inch. Therefore, a inch joint mismatch is
considered for this evaluation.
5.22.3 AWS D1.1 Code Section for Butt Joint Alignment:
An offset not exceeding 10% of the thickness of the thinner part joined, but in no case more
than 1/8 in. (3mm), shall be permitted as a departure from the theoretical alignment. In
correcting misalignment in such cases, the parts shall not be drawn in to a greater slope
than in. (12 mm) in 12 in. (300 mm)
2.20 AWS D1.1, Transitions of Thickness and Widths.
Tension butt joints between axially aligned members of different thickness or widths, or
both, and
subject to tensile stress greater than one-third the allowable design tensile stress shall be
made in such
a manner that the slope in the transition does not exceed 1 in 2 (see Figure 2.6 for
thickness and
Figure 2.7 for width). The transition shall be accomplished by chamfering the thicker part,
tapering the wider part, sloping the weld metal, or by any combination of these.

AWS D1.1 Section 1.1 permits the engineer to specifically modify or exempt
sections:
This code contains the requirements for fabricating and erecting welded steel structure.
When this code is stipulated in contract documents, conformance with all provisions of the
code shall be required, except for those provisions that the Engineer of contract documents
specifically modifies or exempts.
Material
Material is per the panel fabrication specification APP-1208-Z0-001 ASTM A572, Grade 50.
Properties for this material are:
Fy = 50 ksi
Fult = 65 ksi
Minimum Elongation in 8 inch is 18%.
Weld Material
A minimum tensile strength of 70 ksi is required
Tie Bars
The tie bars are ASTM A496-Grade 70, Nelson D2L deformed bars
Minimum yield strength: fry = 70,000 psi
Minimum tensile strength: fru = 80,000 psi
Nominal Diameter: 0.75 in
Nominal Area: 0.41 in2

Drawings
APP-1208-SC-101 depicts the roll-out view of the SC panels. Field weld joints are required
between each of the panels.
The weld requirements for the panel joints are shown on drawing APP- 1208-SC-906
(Reference 7) for perfectly aligned panel plates.
Backing Bar Requirements (SV0-CA00-GEF-000017). Construction aid and no nonstructural
A review of E&DCR SV0-CA20-GEF-000039 finds a technical justification that states Backing
material is non-structural and not considered as part of the overall structures and is a
construction aid. RFI APP-CA20-GF-644 states in the WEC response section that
Westinghouse does not consider backing bar as safety related, it is not credited in structural
calcs, backing bar is not included on BOMs or drawings and allows fabricator to decide on
procurement requirements. With these facts being the case, clarification is needed that since
backing bar is considered non-safety related, backing being a construction aid and backing
not being credited as part of the structural design, that the entire welding process for
backing bar should be considered non-safety related and the general notes for structural
welding do not apply, as such, no NDE would be needed for backing bar welds.
