MOLD WIDTH SETUP GAUGE

ST150 MoldCALIPER

The operator can quickly measure the top or bottom width by

sliding the Sensor Head from one side of the mold to the other,
viewing the distance on an LCD display mounted on the top of
the gauge. The digital display operates with an integrated
magnetoresistive sensor head which records pulse signals
generated from movement over a magnetic tape. The tape,
fastened to the underside of the caliper with high temperature
adhesive, is protected by a stainless steel jacket.
The ST150 is capable of measuring mold widths up to 120
inches, as well as checking mold taper by measuring the top
and bottom narrow face positions. Additionally, the position of
the foot rolls can be measured to make sure they are not in the
passline and also to verify the size of the dummy bar.

The ST150 uses a laser and a magnetoresistive digital encoder to measure

the width of the mold. The highly visible beam of the laser indicates when
the Sensor Head is moved into position against the narrow face. The digital
encoder is reset and moved to the other narrow face for measurement.

Narrow Face

The ST150 MoldCALIPER is a portable gauge that

is placed on top of the mold to measure the distance
between the narrow faces with precise accuracy
(0.004in). A laser sensor is used to cast a highly
visible beam of light down into the mold for a measurement
reference for determining the position of the narrow faces.

Measurement Principle

Narrow Face

Quickly and accurately measure caster mold width using the

ST150 Mold CALIPER from Sequence Technologies.
Accurate mold setup width is an important parameter in the
production process, typically obtained by reaching down and
stretching a tape measure between the narrow faces, which
can be unsafe and error prone. Sequence Technologies has
solved this by developing a laser based non-contact method
for measuring mold width.

Operational Overview
Sensor Head is moved into position near first narrow face (START)
The Display is Zeroed and moved across the mold
The Sensor Head may be stopped at the mold center for half width value
Sensor Head is moved the rest of the way to the other narrow face (END)
The mold width is displayed on the LCD screen and logged.
