News and Prayer Letter May 2015

Well, we are full swing into summeror is it spring? The weather here in Pittsburgh has been very hot for being
only May. We have been in the upper 80s to low 90s!
New birth
In John 3, Jesus tells Nicodemus that unless someone is born of water and the Spirit they cannot see the
kingdom of God. Jesus then says that we must be born again. Jesus speaks of 2 births: one that is physical and
one that is spiritual. As we look forward to meeting our new little girl in just a couple of weeks, we were
reminded that this is the first birth that Jesus was talking about. It is such an exciting time as a new life enters
into a new family. Everyone celebrates and rejoices! Its a wonderful time.
It is equally exciting when we get to witness and be a part of a spiritual birth. Two days ago, while I (Dennis) was
talking on the phone with the man who had come to me for help with an alcohol addiction, I witnessed just
that! I have already decided that the next time we talked I was going to challenge him on some things to see
where he really was spiritually. He has been coming regularly and was in agreement with what we have been
teaching, but I kept getting the sense that it wasnt personal to him. So, when I called him Thursday morning, he
was not in good shape. He had stumbled with alcohol and was broken up over it. I shared with him much
Scripture and walked through his need for the Gospel. He said, I agree with everything you said. The Lord
brought to mind James chapter 2: the devils believe and tremble. I shared that with him. As we ended our
conversation, he said before you go, can I say a prayer. I had not pushed him towards a prayer so I wasnt sure
what to expect. As he sobbed through his prayer, he confessed his sin (not just his alcohol, but that he was
really a sinner), asked for forgiveness, and said I dont want to go to hell. Im all in, but I need your help to do
this. I met with him the next day and asked him what happened on Thursday. He said that he is done trusting
in his righteousness and is trusting in the righteousness of Jesus! What an amazing testimony! Please pray for
him as he begins life in a new family, the family of God. Pray for the salvation of his family (especially his
Buddhist wife).
Outreach events
Over the last couple of weeks, we were able to bring in a couple different treats for the teachers at 4 local
schools. They were very appreciative and couldnt believe that a church was recognizing them in this way. We
also thanked them in an ad we started running in the neighborhood paper. Dennis was able to speak to the
teachers at one of the schools just yesterday. We are praying that God would use this open door for His glory.
Each Memorial Day, Brookline and two other communities have a parade. We have decided to set up on the
parade route and distribute water and a connection card to the spectators. If you are available that morning for
a couple hours, we could certainly use your help. Just let us know!
Our Family
Avalon and Emily are both having a blast in T-ball this year (somehow dad ended up coaching their team). It is
hard to believe that Avalon will be graduating kindergarten within the month! She is already reading and writing
very well. It is wonderful to hear her teachers talk about what a blessing she is to them. Val thought she would
escape the summer heat during this pregnancy, but that isnt the case. She is doing well, but not doing as much
as she had been. Pray for a healthy delivery.
This picture to the left is of us washing windows for businesses. It was a lot of fun and a help to the business
owners. We are now meeting in the Rec building across the street from our house (see top photo). This is great
exposure as the park has been packed with people as the weather has warmed up. Pray that God would use this
change of venue to grow our Sunday gathering.
