DAILY WRITING FLUENCY PROMPTS


Lesson 1
Description
Have students think of a family member that they have a quality in common with. This
quality may be a physical trait, personality, or a talent. Ask students to write about how
they are similar to this family member.
SAY: Identify a family member that you have traits in common with. Write about
how you and this person are similar.

Lesson 2
Accessing Prior Knowledge
Have students look at the map of Asia on page 102 of the Student Book. Ask students to
list things they know about countries in Asia.
SAY: Look at the map of Asia on page 102. List things you already know about
countries in Asia.

Lesson 3
Description
Ask students to think of someone they know who is clever. Have their write a description
that shows how this person is smart.
SAY: Write a description of someone you know who is clever. Explain why you
think this person is smart.

Lesson 4
Captions
Ask students to look at the illustrations in the story The Clever Daughter-in-Law. Have
them write a caption for one of the illustrations.

Lesson 5
Metacognition
After students perform the play, ask them to write about what they learned from either
being in the audience or performing.

Riddles
Review the riddles in the folktale. The wind wrapped in paper was a fan and the fire
wrapped in paper was a lantern. Ask students to make up a riddle about a common
object.
SAY: Make up a riddle about an object you use in daily life.

Lesson 7
Description
Ask students to think of a special food they like to eat for a holiday or important family
occasion. Have them write about why they like this food.
SAY: Describe a special food you like to eat for a holiday or important family
occasion.

Lesson 8
Narrative
Have students make up a story about one of the photographs on pages 110111 of the
Student Book.
SAY: Choose one of the photographs on pages 110111. Write a story about this
photograph.

Lesson 9
Family Story
Ask students to think of a family story they have heard. Have them write the story.
SAY: Write a family story that your have heard from an older member of your
family.

Lesson 10
Possessives
Review how to make possessives of a single noun by adding an apostrophe s. Have
students write a sentence about an object that belongs to a family member, such as: My
brothers bike is red.
SAY: Write a sentence about an object that belongs to a family member.

Lesson 11
Exposition
Have students write an explanation of family traits, based on what they have read so far.
SAY: Write what you know about family traits.

Interview
Have students work in pairs. One student will write three interview questions and the
other will respond as Gregor Mendel.
SAY: Work with a partner. One of you will write three interview questions. The
other will write responses as Gregor Mendel.

Lesson 13
Exposition
Ask students to think about the different generations in their family. They may have
parents, aunts, and uncles in one generation and children, such as brothers, sisters, and
cousins, in another. They may also have grandparents. Have students identify the
generations they know about in their family.
SAY: Write about the generations in your family.

Lesson 14
Family Tree
Remind students of the family in The Clever Daughter-in-Law. Ask them how they
could create a family tree to include the father, sons, and daughters-in-law.
SAY: Create a family tree for the family in The Clever Daughter-in-Law.

Lesson 15
Homophones
Write the following words on the board: hear, here; right, write; sea, see; tail, tale.
Review the meaning of each word with students. Have them chose a pair and write two
sentences.
SAY: Choose a pair of homophones and write two sentences using the words.

Sequence Words
Review words that express sequence with students: first, next, then, finally. Have
students write sentences explaining the order of an event.
SAY: Write sentences showing the order of an event. Use the words first, next,
then, and finally.

Personal Letter
Have students write a letter to a friend or family member. Ask them to tell about
something they did. Remind students to use sequence words.

Lesson 18
Compare and Contrast
Remind students of the princess in The Jewel in the Sand, the Arab folktale from
Unit 1. Ask students to compare the farm girl in The Clever Daughter-in-Law with the
princess.
SAY: Compare and contrast the princess in The Jewel in the Sand with the
farm girl in The Clever Daughter-in-Law. How are these characters alike?
How are they different?
