A Critical Analysis of the Given Article

In the article, Spirit of Volunteerism, the author, deals with the spirit of volunteerism among
the non-governmental organization (NGOs). He agreed that the spirit of volunteerism have to be
built in the society to help others improve their living environment. The words such as effects,
important and lofty goals describe that the authors does approve that he agreed with the spirit of
volunteerism.
The first point of view that the he come out with is, many of them, who was involved in the
volunteerism were not directly involved in politics but, by involving themselves in the
volunteerism they actually being a good citizen. Majority of people around the world wake up
each morning in a poor conditions and they need to survive that day with a hard work that was
not worth fully paid.
In Malaysia, we used to formal education or schooling because we have a set of academic
curriculum and our education generally prepares us for urban life. But in many other country,
they do not have those type of system. That is why we must be one of the volunteer to help to set
up non-formal education for those who need it. There are no fund needed to do it and it will
drawing up a curriculum that is relevant to the needs of that community rather than of city folk in
the urban First World. The author also said that, achieving all of this is as much a learning
process as it is helping.
Volunteer needs to be a helpful person and helping the needs to become a self-reliant. According
to the author, therefore, a volunteer it is not the provision of technical assistance, but it requires
empathy to understand the plight of people. The unfortunate personnel only need to be help to
learn about their own capacity to improve their lives.
The supporting detail that been present by the author is expert opinion, Syed Farid Alatas
(Associate Professor at the Departments of Sociology and Malay Studies, Faculty of Art &
Social Science in the National University of Singapore) said that the democracy of Islam is based
on two important elements which is unity of human race and the freedom of belief. According to
the fundamentals, people should be free in expressing their different way of life.
The type of reasoning in this text including a deductive reasoning. The author mentioned that
many people around the world, do not have a comfortable lifestyle compared to the Malaysian

lifestyle. It is because, in Malaysia we have a set of academic curriculum and it prepares us for
urban life. For the inductive reasoning, the author states that the strength of civil society depends
on the vibrancy of the spirits of volunteerism. A strong civil society is vital for the proper
functioning of a free society presided over by an accountable government. Civil society refers to
the intermediate sphere of society between the private realm of the family and the political
relations of the state.
The purpose of this text is, the author try to convince the reader to join the volunteer by
expressing out many kind of points that can change the mind set of others. One of the point is,
volunteering does not involve just extending physical but cognitive and emotional help as well.
From this point, we can analyze that he try to attract the reader to join the volunteering group
among the NGOs.
From the first paragraph, the author said that All concerned citizen need be involved as private
citizen or members of NGOs. Therefore, the intended audience were clearly stated in the quoted
sentence. The author targeted this text to all concerned citizen and he also hoped that all citizen
of this country involve in the NGOs as a volunteer.
We may conclude, the author agree with the topic that been discuss. He personally tell us to
increase the spirit of volunteerism in ourselves. He believe that volunteerism play a major role in
the development of lively society.
