From the Pastors Desk

we can see ourselves as being on the same side.

Dear Parish Family,

And with that in mind RCIA is about to get under way.

The preparation team will meet this coming week to
begin planning. If you know someone, maybe even
you are that someone, who might feel they are being
called to live as a Catholic person, you might begin
having that conversation which would see the first
step being taken. When it is advertised, plan on
attending an information evening which will be held in
an informal, friendly and caring way so that you learn
more on taking that first step to a fuller inclusion in
this faith community.

I received a very grateful thank you from Lyn at the

Community Centre who is coordinating the soup
kitchen on a Tuesday in our Parish Hall: she was
simply blown away by the number of soups that were
so lovingly prepared and left in our Hall kitchen and
the number of people who offered to stay and help. I
really want to add my personal thanks to hers. It
doesnt get any better for us as a community then to
be out there helping people in need and flying the
flag proudly for our Christian Catholic faith. They have
enough soup this coming week but could use some
helpers; maybe two helpers for this coming round. I
know that we will have so many people wanting to
help Ill need a roster!!

I have put in the newsletter this week a pro forma for

planning your Catholic funeral. It is good for us to
make known our final liturgy wishes! If you want a
Catholic funeral and in our Catholic Church you need
to have a conversation with those in your life who will
be making that decision for you at the end. It is not in
the least way morbid or tempting fate by discussing
what you want. This conversation should include such
things as what to do in case you are on life support,
what in your opinion is a reasonable effort for
resuscitation and if you want to be resuscitated and I
think if you want to be an organ donor or are listed as
an organ donor.

Speaking of rosters: if you are on a reading or

Eucharistic Minister roster and want to come off, or
not on a reading roster and Eucharistic Minister roster
and want to be on one, or both, can you please email
the Parish office this week and let us know. I am keen
that some minor changes be made to the rosters so
now is the time to make contact with the parish office.
Then we can ensure that our ministry and
extraordinary minister needs are being met. I have
experienced a few gaps at different times recently and
I suspect it is caused by a lack of communication.
Sharon in the office has been working hard behind the
scenes to get the rosters right, so that everyone gets a
fair share of the ministry they have so generously put
their hands up for.

Regards,

Fr Greg

From the Administrators Desk...

Greg and Lauranne Byrne and I attended the annual
NAPPA ( New South Wales Association of Pastors &
Pastoral Associates) Conference on Tuesday and
Wednesday at Dooleys Catholic Club, Lidcombe.
The theme of the Conference was From Horseback
to Hatchback and examined ministry in the Catholic
Church from the days when Priests rode around to
their parishioners on horseback to the various faces of
ministry by clergy and laity today.

On Friday (15th May) the kids, teachers and parents

involved in the Parish Sacramental program, are
heading on a field trip to the Bishops office in
Newcastle. Would you remember them in prayer? It is
a huge experience for them to have the opportunity
of meeting Bishop Bill informally before he arrives in
the Parish to confirm them. It is, I believe a very
exciting time for our young people and their families.
Whilst we are there we will tour the Diocesan offices
as well as the Cathedral precinct. For many children
this will be their first opportunity to see in side where
the Bishop works and to have an opportunity to view
the Cathedral which is really the spiritual heart of
Catholic faith and life for the Diocese. And the Bishop
is going to give them food! Please keep praying for the
young people in our sacramental process and, if you
can, please attend their Confirmation on the 26th
May. If we want young people to carry on our faith
tradition we have to find as many ways as possible to
build links between them on their side and us on our
side, so whilst we dont lose our individual diversity

66 people attended consisting of 2 Bishops, 12 Priests,

1 Deacon and 14 Religious Sisters and 37 Lay Pastoral
workers.
Keynote speakers were Fr Ed Campion, noted
historian and Bishop Eugene Hurley, Bishop of Darwin.
Many would know Fr Edmund Campion as a writer,
editor, literary judge and academic. He has been
described as possessor of one of the truly elegant
minds of the nation.
His historical knowledge told us of the Irish convicts
who kept the Catholic faith alive while there were no
priests, in the first 34 years of Australian history.
3

A New Commandment

The Bishop of Darwin, Eugene Hurley was our second

speaker. Bishop Eugene works closely with our
Aboriginal sisters and brothers and it was evident he
has a true affinity and love for the people who reside
in the NT.

Refrain
A new commandment I give unto you;
that you love one another as I have loved you,
that you love one another as I have loved you.

Bishop Eugene also asked us to consider the innate

goodness of heterosexuality and the innate goodness
of homosexuality. God only makes beautiful things,
God made you and you are a beautiful creation of a
mighty God.

By this shall all know that you are my disciples:

if you have love, one for another. (x2) Refrain
You are my friends if you do what I command you.
without my help you can do nothing. (x2) Refrain

Our speakers for the third day were Kari Hatherell

OSU and Richard McMahon who spoke about
Shaping an Authentic Pastoral Ministry using the
teachings of Pope Francis. We are collectively
responsible and called to make present Christs
fragrance to others. In order to do that we need to
identify and address the barriers that block our way.
We need to create personal relationships with our
existing parishioners and communicate the gospel to
our friends and family. In the words of Pope Francis,
for if we have received the love which restores
meaning to our lives, how can we fail to share that
love with others?

I am the vine and my Father is the gardener;

remain in me, I will be with you. (x2) Refrain
True love is patient, always kind and never boastful;
love bears all things, love is eternal. (x2) Refrain

Youre Invited to Family Group

There is a Family Group in our parish which has
operated for about 24 years. It consists of
approximately 30 individuals or families. Its purpose is
friendship and fellowship.
The Family Group gets together each month for an
activity. The activities often involve an afternoon tea,
movies followed by a coffee at a local venue, picnics,
quiz afternoons, a luncheon out and about or at
someones home.

All talks were followed by group discussions to

generate ideas on how we can best move forward in
our ministries.
The conference also provided the opportunity to
network with other ministers and gave us all hope for
the future of the Church.

We would like to
invite any person or
family,
particularly
new parishioners to
consider joining us for
an activity to see if
you might want to
meet regularly.

In conclusion, I believe we must continue to be

prayerful if we are to discern appropriately what God
should have us do and proactive in revealing ourselves
as the body of Christ.
Sharon
