SON LUX is led by Ryan Lott. After his first record, At War With Walls and Mazes, NPRs All Songs Considered
declared him "Best New Artist" of 2008. Son Lux has released two EPs and two LPs since, including 2011's We
Are Rising LP, ambitiously written and recorded in just 28 days. All Music Guide describes 2013's Lanterns LP as
"nothing short of a miracle." Son Lux's latest release, Alternate Worlds EP, completely re-imagines four songs from
Lanterns, and features Lorde.
Son Lux "works at the nexus of several rarely-overlapping Venn Diagrams (Pitchfork)." As such, few artists have
built a more impressive and varied array of collaborators; Pop icons Lorde, Beyonc producer Boots and Richard
Parry (Arcade Fire), indie darlings Sufjan Stevens (with whom he shares the side project Sisyphus) and Peter
Silberman (The Antlers), composers Nico Muhly and Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw, rappers Serengeti,
Busdriver and Beans (Antipop Consortium), and MacArthur Genius Grant recipient and Bluegrass legend Chris
Thile are all among Son Lux's recent collaborators.
Son Lux composes music film, theater and dance. Film credits include arranging and programming for four major

At just 22 years old, Daym - a singer, arranger composer, and choir director is already a veteran presence in Cuban music, and is fast gaining nternational
profile. She says she has sang all her life and recalls her four-year old self performing on every block in her neighborhood. Fun stuff,she says, Wearing
crazy dresses and singing like a rumbera (Rumberas are the street parties in Cuba where you hear exploding Afro-Cuban rhythms and chants sometimes
in Yoruba). She has been performing semi-professionally since the age of 8, and became lead singer with the big band Los Primos at 14. She has
performed with Winton Marsalis, and was invited by the Canadian saxophonist Jane Bunnet to perform in Canada.
Recorded in just a few days in London and Havana, Dayms debut album is a work of elegant maturity, showcasing Dayms mix of influences. Her
background as a choir director is in evidence on the wonderful layered vocals on tracks like Nueva Era, Nio and Madres. Madres also alludes to the
Santeria chanting that have formed part of Daym's worship since childhood. The lead single Dont Unplug My Body shows off Daym skill at writing an
easy-on-the-ear pop tune, whilst there is humour in El Ruso (about her mother being forced to learn Russian in the Soviet supported Cuba of the 80s) and
in the lament Dust (inspired by Daym visit to Canada - she was horrified by the dust in the houses, compared to Cuba where everything is kept
meticulously clean). A strong jazz influence is clear throughout the album The first jazz singer I really liked was Ella because she got me crazy when I
listened to her scatting. Beautiful ballads like Come to Me and Sin Empezar complete a confident and well balanced longer player. The switching
between Spanish and English lyrics hinting at an ambition to reach a worldwide audience with her music. Apart from on the deep rumba of El Ruso recorded in Cuba - Daym is backed by a truly world class London band (Percussionist Oli Savill, Robert Mitchell on piano, and Neil Charles on bass).
Production duties are split between Gilles Peterson, his longtime collaborator Simbad and Daym herself

Known as "Mr. Swing", Red Norvo was an unusual figure in early

jazz, being an exponent of the xylophone and marimba (and later
the vibraphone), which were not regular features in jazz
ensembles of the time, but he went on to become an important
personality in the genre whose work retained relevance into the
post-war bebop and cool school era. This excellent-value 40track collection, which includes a number of recordings of
extended length, encompasses a period of close to four decades
from some of his first recordings in the early '30s through to a
hiatus in his recording career in the early '60s. It includes work in
both small and large ensembles, with a small selection of
recordings featuring his wife, the singer Mildred Bailey, from the
late '30s, and it is a fine showcase for his flowing improvisations
in all those contexts.
The quality of the recordings is underlined by the remarkable rollcall of top names with whom he recorded over the years from
swing legends like Jimmy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Charlie Barnet
and Harry James through to bebop stars like Dizzy Gillespie and
Charlie Parker, and the collection includes some tracks by his
highly noted trio of the '50s with Charlie Mingus and Tal Farlow.
It is a very entertaining tribute to an artist who has not received
the attention he merits.

Cecil Gant was a boogie-woogie pianist and R&B vocalist who

toured during the 1930s but came to prominence in 1944 when
he scored a No. 1 R&B hit with "I Wonder" while still in the US
Army and was performing and recording as "Private Cecil Gant The G.I. Singsation" while appearing at Government Bond rallies.
He went on to score several more Top 10 R&B hits during the
late '40s until his premature death in 1951 from pneumonia at the
age of 37.
This excellent-value 52-track 2-CD collection selects from his
prolific recording output during those hectic seven years for the
Bronze, Gilt Edge, Four Star, Downbeat, Bullet and Decca
labels, his work encompassing pure boogie-woogie through to
jump blues and sentimental blues-inspired ballads, often in the
semi-spoken style reminiscent of Fats Waller established by "I
Wonder". He was a highly individual and distinctive performer,
and he occupies a unique niche in the annals of post-war R&B
and blues - this anthology will certainly interest those looking to
build an eclectic collection of recordings across the genre.

Conrad Yeatis "Sonny" Clark (July 21, 1931 - January 13, 1963)
was among the very finest jazz pianists working in the hard bop
idiom. Born and raised in Herminie, Pennsylvania, a coal mining
town east of Pittsburgh, Sonny was the youngest of eight
children. When visiting an aunt in California aged 20, Clark
decided to stay and began working with saxophonist Wardell
Gray. He then went to San Francisco with Oscar Pettiford and
after a couple months, was working with clarinetist Buddy
DeFranco in 1953. Clark toured the USA and Europe with
DeFranco until January 1956, when he joined The Lighthouse
All-Stars, led by bassist Howard Rumsey. Wishing to return to
the east coast, Clark served as accompanist for singer Dinah
Washington in February 1957 in order to relocate to New York
City. In New York, Clark was often requested as a sideman by
many musicians, partly because of his rhythmic comping.
He frequently recorded for Blue Note Records, serving as a
sideman for many hard bop players, including Kenny Burrell,
Donald Byrd, Paul Chambers, John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, Art
Farmer, Curtis Fuller, Grant Green, Philly Joe Jones, Clifford
Jordan, Jackie McLean, Hank Mobley, Art Taylor and Wilbur
Ware. He also recorded sessions with Charles Mingus, Sonny
Rollins, Billie Holiday, Stanley Turrentine, and Lee Morgan.

John Haley "Zoot" Sims (October 29, 1925 - March 23, 1985)
was an American jazz saxophonist, playing mainly tenor and
soprano. He was born in Inglewood, California, the son of
vaudeville performers Kate Haley and John Sims, and grew up in
a performing family. Sims learned to play both drums and clarinet
at an early age. Following in the footsteps of Lester Young, Sims
developed into an innovative tenor saxophonist. Throughout his
career he played with big bands, starting with those of Kenny
Baker and Bobby Sherwood following him dropping out of high
school after one year. He played with Benny Goodman's band in
1943 and replaced his idol Ben Webster in Sid Catlett's Quartet
in 1944. Sims served 1944-1946 as a corporal in the United
States Army Air Forces, then moved on to such renowned bands
as those of Artie Shaw, Stan Kenton and Buddy Rich. Sims was
also one of Woody Herman's "Four Brothers", and he was known
among his peers as one of the strongest swingers in the field. He
frequently led his own combos and sometimes toured with his
friend Gerry Mulligan's sextet. Later he toured with Mulligan's
Concert Jazz Band. Sims rejoined Goodman in 1962 for a tour of
the Soviet Union. In the 1950s and '60s Sims had a long,
successful partnership as co-leader of a quintet with Al Cohn,
which recorded under the name "Al and Zoot" and was a
favourite at New York City's Half Note Club. Zoot also liked to
play alto and late in his career added the soprano saxophone to
his performances while recording a series of albums for Pablo
Records, label of impresario Norman Granz.

during the post-war decades with an anthology devoted to the
prolific hit-maker Carl Smith, husband of June Carter (later June
Carter-Cash) and father of Carlene Carter. This great-value 50track 2-CD set comprises all the entries in the US country charts
which Carl Smith scored from his chart debut in 1951 through the
decade and more that followed, including a remarkable run of 21
hits with consecutive singles during the '50s and a total of 30 Top

Jimmie Rodgers, not to be confused with the pioneering hillbilly

country artist of the early '30s, was a hugely successful artist in
the pop charts during the late '50s and early '60s, his work
transcending the barriers between pop, country, folk and R&B to
give him a succession of major hits on both sides of the Atlantic.
He was one of the many successful artists to emerge from the
influential Arthur Godfrey Talent Show on radio, and was one of
the first artists signed to Maurice Levy's Roulette label in 1957.
Working with ace producers Hugo Peretti and Luigi Creatore, he
scored a No. 1 with his debut single "Honeycomb" and followed it
up with "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine", "Oh-Oh, I'm Falling In Love
Again" and "Secretly", benefitting from a supply of fine songs by
the top team of Al Hoffman and Dick Manning. This collection
comprises the A and B side of all his releases through to 1962,
when he enjoyed his last Top 30 success with a UK No. 5 with
"English Country Garden". It's an enjoyable journey through the
most important years of the career of an artist who successfully
sat alongside the high-profile exponents of rock 'n' roll appealing
to the middle ground of pop in the years before the British

in 2006 before we introduced the 4-CD format in recent years.
This great-value 109-track collection comprises every record
which charted in the Top 15 of any version of the Billboard

One of contemporary music's true originals, the inimitable songs

of Nick Drake are often difficult to imagine having been
influenced by anyone but himself. But as with all true musical
giants, Drake's compositions and style were informed by a
diverse range of musicians, songwriters and performers who
came before. From the sublime finger-picking and glorious tunes
of the wholly under-rated Bert Jansch to the country blues styles
of Big Bill Broonzy and Reverend Gary Davis - via Donovan, The
Yardbirds and Miles Davis, he listened to all of them and many
others besides. The inspiration these mavericks provided
motivated the often manically depressed Nick Drake into writing ,
recording and, on the very rare occasion, performing some of the
most beautiful music ever written - albeit, tragically, the process
would contribute in no small way to his untimely death at the age
of just 26. This compilation traces the roots of Nick Drake's
astonishing music and features all of the above mentioned artists
and many others - with 24 superb and moving tracks in all. 24
tracks which now can be appreciated all together on this
collection, enabling the appreciation of where this mysterious
and legendary figure found much of his musical muse and
hopefully, for a man often tortured by his own existence, at least
a little comfort.

The Cramps are one of those select handful of bands that have
such a groundbreaking combination of sharply-defined musical,
sartorial and behavioral styles as to stake a claim to being
'unique' in so far as that oft-abused epithet may be applied to a
mere 'beat combo'. The Cramps weren't Punk like The Pistols,
New Wave like Television, Garage like The Fleshtones, nor
Glam like The New York Dolls... no, they really were something
else, with a garish graveyard Trash aesthetic all of their very
own.
The Cramps first releases were a brace of singles, produced by
ex-Box Top and Big Star maverick main man Alex Chilton,
recorded in 1978 at Memphis' Ardent Studios: Human Fly b/w
Domino and Surfin' Bird b/w The Way I Walk. The band's potent
fuzz-drenched and reverb-soaked sound was succinctly and
accurately described as a stew of "depraved influences - TV, 60's
garage punk, comic books, jungle movies, deep-ghetto R&B and
shock-value theatrics".

Jamison Ross was the Winner of the 2012 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Drums competition.
The recording is a brilliant presentation of Ross' artistry, not only showcasing his prowess as a jazz
musician who commands the drums, but also as a gifted composer, arranger and more pointedly, a
singer. Ross sings on ten of the discs 12 tracks. When I won the Monk competition, no one there
knew that I could sing, says 27-year-old Ross. When I took on the quest to record my first record, I
was torn between my heart as a drummer and my heart as a singer. Ultimately, I was compelled to
take a journey that incorporated my voice as part of my sound.
Complementing him on the album is a group of ingenious jazz musicians guitarist Rick Lollar,
bassist Corcoran Holt, saxophonist Dayve Stewart, pianist Chris Pattishall, organist Cory Irvin, and
trumpeter Alphonso Horne III all of whom Ross has cultivated a soulful chemistry with dating back
to his college years. Also on deck is special guest pianist Jonathan Batiste, who plays on four songs.
