“Who Is This Coming One?

”
(Isaiah 9:6-7)

I. Introduction.
A. We looked at this passage a few months ago to see the prophetic work of Christ in
the early parts of this verse.
1. He was to be the light shining to the people in a very dark place.
a. The world was black from sin. There was nothing but despair.
b. But the Lord came shining a beacon of hope, the light of the Gospel.

2. He would come preaching the Gospel in Zebulun and Naphtali first.

a. These were the territories which experienced God’s wrath first when He
brought judgment from Babylon and Assyria.
b. Here relief would first come and blessing.
(i) He would multiply the nation – many would be saved.
(ii) He would increase their gladness – freedom from sin, a blessed future.
(iii) He would break the yoke of their oppressor – which would be the devil.
(iv) He would bring peace – reconciliation with God and eventual world
peace.
(v) And all this through the Gospel.

B. Last week, we considered Christ’s incarnation as the path to His throne.

1. He was made a little lower than the angels that He might be crowned with glory
and honor.
2. He did this to restore the rule of the Creation man lost to the devil.
3. This passage deals with the same thing.
a. It tells us a child would be born.
b. And the government would rest on His shoulders.
c. We’re very familiar with these things.
d. But this passage shows us something more of who He was to be –
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
e. These are the things I would like for us to consider this evening: who Jesus
is and what difference this makes for us.

II. Sermon.
A. The fulfillment of all these things spoken of rested on this birth: “For a child will
be born to us, a son will be given to us.” But who is this child? The names by
which He is called tell us.
1. Names reveal who and what we are.
a. Names were significant in the Bible.
b. Abraham means the father of nations.
c. Isaac means laughter.
d. Jacob means supplanter.
e. Yahweh means the One who is or who will continue to be.

f. Jesus means Yahweh is salvation.

g. It talks about who they are, or what their character is.

2. What are the names of this child?

a. Wonderful: incomprehensible, beyond knowing fully, referring to His deity.
(i) Showing the majesty of His being.
(ii) He is not just a finite creature. He is the infinite Creator.
(iii) He is beyond fully knowing.
(iv) This is not just any son, but the Son of God.
(a) Sometimes we forget who Jesus is.
(b) He’s not just a man, but God – the eternal God, the ever blessed God,
the infinitely wise and powerful God, the holy God.
(c) He’s God the Son, the One the Father loved most of all, with an
infinite love.
(d) And yet He is the One the Father was willing to give for us.
(e) What does this say about the love of God?
(f) What would we be willing to give to God? The thing most precious to
us?
(g) The Father gave what is most precious to Him to save us.
(h) He calls us to give what is most precious to us to Him – father,
mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, our own life, all our
possessions – to be His disciples (Luke 14:26-33).
(i) But considering what He paid to have us and what He gives us in place
of these things, it’s far more than worth it!

b. Counselor: One who is able to advise, give godly counsel.

(i) We saw before why He would be able to give this counsel.
(ii) “Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, and a branch from his
roots will bear fruit. And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him, the spirit
of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and strength, the spirit
of knowledge and the fear of the Lord” (Isa. 11:1-2).
(iii) Christ is the only true Counselor: He gives the only counsel worth
knowing.
(iv) He is the Word of God. His Spirit is the Spirit of revelation.
(v) When we come to church, we come to hear His Word, to gain His
wisdom.
(vi) When we want guidance, we go to His Word.
(a) In it He gives to us everything we need to know, that has to do with
life and godliness.
(b) But it’s often the one we spend the least time studying.

(vii) Do you want to know how to have God’s blessing? Go to Christ’s

Word.
(viii) Do you want to know what kind of job He wants you to have? He will
tell you what you can and can’t do morally.

(ix) Do you want to know whom to marry? He’ll tell you what the non-
negotiables are.
(x) Do you want to know how to raise your children? He tells you how.
(xi) Christ gives you all the wisdom and counsel you need.
(xii) He is not only a Savior from sin and judgment, He is a Savior from
ignorance. He is your counselor.
(xiii) This should encourage us to dig into His Word to learn it, not only for
ourselves, but for our children; husbands for your wives; for our brothers
and sisters in Christ.

c. Mighty God: the strong, mighty, brave and valiant God.

(i) He is our champion, our hero.
(ii) The One who fights our enemies: of the soul, as well as physical.
(iii) The One who protects and defends us.
(iv) He is the only One, the only One who can.
(v) David wrote, “Oh give us help against the adversary, for deliverance by
man is in vain. Through God we shall do valiantly; and it is He who will
tread down our adversaries” (Psalm 108:12-13).
(vi) Christ crushed the head of our adversary on the cross. He has delivered
our souls.
(vii) He is the One who gives us the safety we now have to enjoy – He has
ordained government (Rom. 13:1).
(viii) When we need help, one to fight for us – personally or nationally – He
is the One we should go to.

d. Eternal Father: the father of eternity (Micah 5:2).

(i) He has always been a father – the Father of redemption – the One who
cares for His people – the One who would save us – the One who is
faithful, tender, wise, who watches over us.
(ii) He not only always has been, but will always be, therefore, His fatherly
care and promises will not fail.

e. And His is the Prince of peace: the One whose reign brings peace.
(i) He reconciles us to the Father, to Himself, and to one another.
(ii) He brings peace by destroying our enemies and His.
(iii) His reign will bring in everlasting peace on the throne of His father
David – there will be no end to it.
(iv) There will be justice and righteousness.
(v) The Lord of hosts will make sure that this happens, because He is zealous
that it happen.

f. These are descriptions of who Jesus is. This is what He is like.

B. But notice something else about Him – His humility, the humbling circumstances
by which He comes into the world. “A child will be born to us.”
1. He came into this world as we do – He was born – of a virgin, yes, but still born.

2. He had to grow as we do, to learn, to go through hardship.

a. So that He might be a faithful High Priest, One who knows our weaknesses.
b. So that He might obey.
c. So that He might die.
d. This isn’t humbling for us, but it is for God.

C. And notice again why He came, “A son will be given to us.”

1. He came for us, for those of us who believe in His name.
2. He suffered hell and died, so that we wouldn’t have to.
3. And He came to rule over us, so that He might deliver us from the tyranny of the
devil.

III. Application.
A. This is the One the Lord has sent.
B. This is what He has done.
C. This should give us great confidence, if we have trusted in Him.
1. He has come for us.
2. He has obeyed for us.
3. He has died for us.
4. He lives to intercede for us.
5. He rules over us and defeats our enemies.
6. He cares for us as a Father.
7. As a father, He counsels us.
8. As Redeemer and King, He gives us peace.
9. Everything we need is in Him.

D. What does the Lord call us to do? To follow His example of humility.
1. Phil. 2:1-16.
2. Christ has become all these things for us, that we might become like Him.
3. May the Lord by His grace transform us into His image. Amen.
