Beaumaris, Hampton & Sandringham's foreshore and beaches through

the years

Historical photos of Beaumaris Bay

Compiled by Vicki Karalis 2015
Beaumaris "Beau" means "beautiful" and "Maris" means "of the sea", taken from the Latin title of the
Virgin Mary, Stella Maris, meaning "star of the sea".
Originally called Spring Grove after the natural springs the Boonwurrung people tapped along the base
of the coastal sandstone cliffs. The name Beaumaris appears to have first been used in 1888 when the
Beaumaris Park Estate was offered for sale. The name was based on a Welsh coastal resort where
Edward I built Beau Marais Castle. http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/victoria/the-az-story-of-melbournessuburbs/story-fni0fit3-1226796054871

-note vertical cliffs of the Beaumaris sandstone (filled with fossils) and the rocky
beaches which makes this area unique
