Cardiff University Chamber Orchestra Conductor Cardiff University School of Music seeks to appoint a conductor for the Chamber Orchestra, the position to commence in September 2015. This position would suit an experienced ensemble director with an interest in leading ensembles of young and aspiring musicians.

Cardiff University School of Music is one of the largest university schools of music in the United Kingdom with an average intake of 70 undergraduate and 15 postgraduate students each year. The School’s programmes include performance, composition, analysis, musicology, and ethnomusicology, and it places particular importance on performance as an essential component in a musical education that balances and combines practical and academic skills. The university ensembles contribute to the educational goals of the school, and we are looking for ensemble directors who wish to collaborate with academic members of staff, other ensemble directors, and practical tutors in providing an integrated educational experience to students.

The Chamber Orchestra is an auditioned group of approximately 40 players. Membership is drawn from many schools within the University, including but not confined to students within the School of Music. The orchestra currently rehearses on Wednesdays in the autumn and spring semesters from 15:00 17:00, although this arrangement may be subject to negotiation with the successful applicant and students. The orchestra gives a minimum of two concerts per year.

Role description:

To direct the chamber orchestra, train students in the fundamentals of ensemble rehearsing and playing, and develop the artistic and, ideally, the pedagogical direction of the ensemble in consultation with relevant members of the academic staff. Oversee auditions.

Person specification:

The successful candidate will have proven ability to inspire, train, and lead chamber ensembles, as well as excellent organisational, communication, interpersonal skills. A sound knowledge of instrumental technique is required, with experience with string instruments highly desirable. The director should also articulate an artistic vision for the School of Music Chamber Orchestra and demonstrate the ability to programme and lead challenging and captivating repertoire that furthers and enhances the education of the students.
