The water is flowing through a pipe having diameters 20 cm and 10 cm at sections 1 and 2 respectively. The
rate of flow through pipe is 35 liters/s. The section 1 is 6 m above the datum and section 2 is 4 m is above
the datum. If the pressure at section 1 is 39.24 N/cm2, find the intensity of pressure at section 2.

A cylindrical specimen of saturated clay, 4 cm in diameter and 9 cm in overall length is tested in an
unconfined compression tester. The specimen has coned end and its length between the apices of cone is
8 cm. find the unconfined compressive strength of clay, if the specimen fails under an axial load of 46.5 N.
The change in the length of specimen at failure is 1 cm.
A retaining wall 4m high, has a smooth vertical back. The backfill has a horizontal surface in level with the
top of the wall. There is uniform distributed surcharge load of 36 kN/m3 intensity over the backfill. The unit
weight of the backfill is 18 kn/m3; its angle of shearing resistance is 30o and cohesion is zero. Determine the
magnitude and point of application of active pressure per meter length of the wall.

18. A river power plant has a capacity of 15000 kW and operates at 30% load factor when it serve as a peak

load station. What should be the minimum discharge in the stream so that it may be serve as a peak load
station? The plant efficiency may be taken as 82 % when working under a head of 25 m. Also calculate the
maximum load factor of the plant when the discharge in the stream is 32%.
