ECONOMICS 222: PRINCIPLES OF MACROECONOMICS

Required:

Textbook: Macroeconomics Principles & Policy, William Baumol


and Alan Blinder 12th Edition. There is an optional study
guide.

Course Objective:

This is an introductory class in macroeconomics. The class will


develop a macroeconomic model of the economy that will provide
an analytical framework for examining macroeconomic issues such
as unemployment, inflation, and GDP, as well as government
stabilization policies. In addition the long run aspects of the
economy will be examined such as growth. The class requires no
previous classes in economics but assumes that you already have a
working knowledge of algebra.

The class will have a total of 325 possible points, divided as

Final grades will be assigned on the following scale:
90.0 100 % A
86.5 89.9 % B+
80.0 86.4 % B
76.5 79.9 % C +
70.0 76.4 % C

Attendance:

Class attendance will not be taken and will not be used in the
calculation of your grade. You are strongly encouraged to attend
class regularly.

Online Classes:
There will be two class sessions that will meet online. Wednesday January
28th, and Wednesday February 25th. See Polylearn for assignments.

Due to the large class size only emergency emails can receive a response.
Questions should be asked in class or at office hours.

Homework: Homework will be assigned; however, it will not be graded or collected.


Answers will be posted on Polylearn.
Tutoring:

Free tutoring is available (and workshops) for all students in this class
from the College of Business.

Midterm Exams:
There will be two midterm exams worth 100 points. The first will be given
in class on Monday January 26th. The second will be given in class on
Wednesday February 18th. There will be no makeup exams for missed
midterms. You may replace your lowest midterm grade with the score on
the final exam if your final exam grade is higher than your lowest midterm
grade. Bring a calculator if you feel you need one and a Scantron sheet
Final Exam: The final exam will be worth 100 points. The final exam will be given
during final exam week. Check the university final exam schedule for the
day and time. You must take the final exam at the scheduled time, as
the final cannot be given early. The final exam grade cannot be dropped.
It is comprehensive but will emphasize the last 1/3 of the class.
Group Project:
You will work in groups of 5 to trade a simulated portfolio of bonds. Two
papers will be required from each group. The first paper will be due on
February 2nd and the second paper will be due March 11th. Groups that
score in the top 10% of profits will receive an extra 5 points extra credit
and will be required to make a class presentation on March 11th. See the
Bond Trading Handout for instructions.
Cheating:

Per Cal Poly policy the penalty for cheating is an F in the class and a
letter/investigation by the office of Student Rights and Responsibilities. If
you get your degree by cheating then its not really yours.
