ENGINEERING PHYSICS MAJOR

(ABET accredited engineering program)

The Engineering Physics Program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation

Commission (EAC) of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
ABET is the only organization that accredits engineering programs in the United States.
Computer Applications in Physics and Engineering (CAPE) Option
This degree program is an interdisciplinary program combining the study of physics and
engineering into one curriculum. Students not only acquire knowledge of physical and
mathematical principles but also learn how to apply this knowledge to meeting the needs of
society. The interdisciplinary nature of this program produces graduates who can work in many
diversified fields and who can easily adapt their skills to the needs of their employers. Two
options are available in this program: Applied Physics and Engineering and Computer
Applications in Physics and Engineering. Both options consist of a strong core of physics and
engineering courses.
The Computer Applications in Physics and Engineering Option was developed to meet the
demand for scientists and engineers who have a strong background in computer applications.
The option is satisfied with selected computer science courses and special courses that
emphasize digital electronics and microcomputers.

FACULTY ADVISOR:
Dr. David Probst
Dr. John Tansil
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES:
Research Physicist; Environmental Scientist; Computer Programmer; Computer Engineer;
Systems Analyst; Systems Designer; Instrumentation Specialist; Electronics Designer;
Research Engineer; Development Engineer; Design Engineer; Production Engineer; Plant
Engineer; Test Engineer; Product Salesman; Engineering Manager.
EMPLOYMENT OUTLOOK:
Job opportunities should be available in private industries and with state and federal
government industries in such areas as pure and applied research, development, design,
production and construction, sales and management. Graduates can also enter into
advanced degree programs specializing in physics, engineering physics and various
branches of engineering.
HIGH SCHOOL PREPARATION FOR MAJOR:
A student should complete four years of mathematics that includes trigonometry and an
introduction to calculus. Four years of science, which includes both chemistry and physics
is highly recommended. A strong background in English is essential.
