Unless otherwise agreed by the Engineer, construct manholes after laying pipes, except that
manhole bases may be constructed earlier to avoid deterioration of the formation.

C.

Sizes of manholes shall be related to the depth of the inlet below ground level and the number
of branch connections. Refer to schedule of external Storm Water manholes. The minimum

thick shall be placed, prior to the construction of bases.
2. Construct manholes with Class C 35 S reinforced concrete as detailed on the Drawings.

F.

2.03

MANHOLE STEP IRONS

Provide cast iron manhole step irons complying with ASTM A 518.
GRANULAR BEDDING MATERIAL
Granular bedding material for pipelines and where otherwise required by the Specification or
on the Drawings shall be well graded, with all material passing 12.5 mm sieve and at least 90%
retained on 75 microns sieve as determined in accordance with ASTM D 422.
PIPEWORK AND VALVES
All pipework and valves shall be of sizes indicated on the Drawings and as specified in Section
22 05 00.
POLYESTER CONCRETE DRAINAGE CHANNELS
External drainage channels shall be constructed of polyester concrete with built-in fall of 0.5 to
0.6% and shall be easily interlocked with adjacent section. Channels shall be provided with
cast-iron gratings, locked securely in position in at least two places/meter run with antivibration fixings. Foul air traps shall be utilized when a proprietary polyester concrete sump is
used.
MARKER TAPE
Pipeline marker tape shall be 300 mm wide and 100 micron thick. Tape for installation above
non-metallic mains shall be electronically detectable, except in specifically approved
circumstances. Elsewhere, tape shall be of polythene, PVC or other plastic material approved
by the Engineer. Tape shall be red in color and shall be printed in Arabic and English
alternately with the words "CAUTION: BURIED STORM WATER DRAIN .

PART 3:

EXECUTION

GENERAL

A.

Install products comprising the Storm Water system in accordance with the approved method
statement, manufacturer's instructions and recommendations, appropriate standards or as
directed by the Engineer.

B.

Excavation for trenches, bedding for pipework, and compaction of backfill shall be in
accordance with Section 31 23 16.13.

C.

Where a pipelines passes into or out of a structure and where settlement is likely to occur, two
flexible joints shall be formed. The first joint shall be as close as practicable to the structure
and the second at the further end of the first pipe. This first pipe length shall not be more than
600 mm for pipes up to and including 150 mm diameter and not more than 900 mm for larger

diameters up to 500 mm. Provisions for pipes larger than 500 mm diameter shall be as shown
on the Drawings.
D.

Where significant settlement is likely to occur, the Engineer may require more than two
flexible joints at each location.

E.

When a pipeline passes through a wall or other structure less than one pipe length wide, the
above requirement shall not apply and a sleeve shall be formed through the structure so that
there is a clear space of at least 75 mm wide all round the pipe. Adequate means shall be
provided to prevent soil from entering this gap.

3.02

INSPECTION

A.

Comply with Section 01 40 00.

B.

Immediately prior to installation, inspect products for damage. Products that are found to be
damaged or not in accordance with their respective standards and specifications shall not be
incorporated in the permanent works, and shall be removed from site. Any remedial measures
shall have the prior approval of the Engineer before being carried out.

as shown on the Drawings.

D.

The pre-cast manufacturer shall cast all step irons for pre-cast concrete manholes integrally into
the pre-cast manhole sections.

E.

Where main the drain size increases at a manhole, the main channel shall be constructed to the
larger pipe size. Pipe size change shall be effected using an eccentric reducer upstream of the
manhole with pipe soffits level.

F.

Unless stated otherwise on the Drawings or in the manhole schedule, all branch connections
shall discharge over the main channel at half channel height and shall be swept in the direction
of flow.

G.

Branch connections direct to main drain lines which are not through a manhole or inspection
chamber shall be soffit to soffit connections.
