Alberto Giacometti
Dates:
Venue:
Pera Museum is proud to announce the first major exhibition of sculptor and painter Alberto Giacometti
in Turkey taking a retrospective approach. Organized in collaboration with the Giacometti Foundation,
Paris, this exhibition explores Giacomettis prolific life, most of which the artist led in his studio in
Montparnasse, through the works of his early period as well his late work, including one unfinished
piece.
Curated by Giacometti Foundations Director Catherine Grenier, the exhibition offers a chronological and
thematic itinerary covering the two definitive periods of Alberto Giacomettis life before and after the
Second World War- and touches upon his friendships with the leading artists and intellectuals of his
period
in
Paris.
Devoted to Giacomettis early works, the first part of the exhibition demonstrates the influence of
Giovanni Giacometti, the father of the artist and a Swiss Post-Impressionist painter himself, on
Giacomettis output during these years and his role in his sons development. The exhibition also
illustrates Alberto Giacomettis relations with Post-Cubist artists and the Surrealist movement between
1922 and 1935, one of the important sculptures series he created during his first years in Paris, and the
critical
role
he
played
in
the
art
scene
of
the
period.
The second part of the exhibition brings together the artists key works from his mature period, most of
which were made between 1950 and 1960, a time when the artist had altered his perception of the
world and depicted reality not as it was but as he saw it. This was also the period when he focused on
the human figure. As in his paintings, Giacometti worked nonstop on his sculptures, either from nature
or
from
memory,
trying
to
capture
the
universal
facial
expressions.
In the 60s, Giacometti paid homage to Paris, the city where he lived, by drawing its streets, cafs, and
more private places like his studio and the apartment of his wife, Annette. These drawings would make
up his last book, Paris sans fin (Paris Without End). A wide selection of lithographs from these drawings
accompanies the exhibition, along with archival material (letters, sketches, publications) and a selection
of photographs.

Museum Information
The Pera Museum opened its doors in early June 2005, as the first step of a comprehensive cultural
endeavor of the Suna and nanKra Foundation in a distinguished venue in the city of Istanbul for the
purpose of providing a cultural service on a variety of levels. The Museum building and historical
structure which was originally constructed in 1893 by the architect AchilleManoussos in Tepeba
(stanbul's most prestigious district in those days) and which was, until rather recently, known as the
Bristol Hotel, was completely renovated to serve as a museum and cultural center for the project.
Transformed into a fully-equipped modern museum, this venerable building is now serving the people
of stanbul once again.
The first and second floors of the Pera Museum house three permanent collections belonging to the
Suna and nanKra Foundation, with the Sevgi and ErdoanGnl Gallery on the second floor. The third,
fourth, and fifth floors are devoted to temporary multipurpose exhibitions. There is an auditorium on
below ground level and on the ground floor are Perakende - Artshop and Pera Cafe.
A large part of the first of the two museum floors display examples from the Foundation's collection of
Anatolian Weights and Measures for the benefit of those in love with history and archaeology. Made
from many different materials using many different techniques, these objects show the development of
the devices used to weigh and measure in Anatolia since the earliest times. In another wing on the same
floor is the Foundation's collection of Ktahya Tiles and Ceramics, whose strikingly beautiful pieces seek
to shed new light on an area of creativity in our cultural history that is not very well known.
The Suna and nanKra Foundation's Orientalist Painting Collection is one of the most elaborate
collections in Turkey. This grand collection brings together important works by European artists inspired
by the Ottoman world, Turkeys regional geography as well as works of Ottoman artists and how they
influenced one another from the 17th century to the early 20th. The collection with more than 400
paintings includes the works by important artists such as Flix Ziem, Jean-Baptiste Vanmour,
AmadeoPreziosi, Antoine de Favray, FaustoZonaro, Jean-Baptiste Hilair, Carl Frederik von Breda,
GermainFabius Brest, Henry Bone, George EngelhardtSchrder and Bertha von Bayer. The collection
presents a vast visual panorama of the last two centuries of the Ottoman Empire, also includes works by
Osman HamdiBey and his most famous painting The Tortoise Trainer. As the Collection is focused
particularly on the Ottoman Orientalist art, it sustains an exceptional stance. Pera Museum organizes
long-term thematic exhibitions of this collection at Sevgi and ErdoanGnl Gallery.
In addition to the Museums educational activities for children and yearly symposiums on intriguing and
academic subjects, the Museum has initiating a Film and Video Program in the autumn of 2008. The
screenings take place in the Museum Auditorium which seats 160 people.
Pera Museum as a modern cultural center located in a vibrant part of the city, also aims to provide the
people of stanbul with a broad range of cultural services that include a variety of temporary exhibitions
as well as film, educational, conference and lecture programs. So far the Museum has been visited over
800,000 visitors.

Foreword
Pera Museum Welcomes Alberto Giacometti on the 10th Anniversary of its Establishment
In celebrating its 10th anniversary, Pera Museum continues to bring outstanding and prominent names
of world art to Turkeys art lovers.
Organized through the efforts of the Pera Museum team as part of a nearly two-year-long collaboration
with Giacometti Foundation Alberto Giacometti exhibition includes works that represent the renowned
artists younger period, his relations with the post-Cubist artists and the Surrealist movement, his early
years in Paris, his determining role on the art milieu of that time, and his years as a master. A wide
selection from the lithographs of the Paris sans fin (Paris without end) drawings in which Giacometti
pays homage to Paris and the equally intriguing Giacometti photographs taken by leading
photographers of the period add another dimension to the exhibition.
We are certain that this comprehensive exhibition, prepared with a retrospective approach, will draw
considerable attention from the art circles of Turkey and would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to
exhibition curator Catherine Grenier, Giacometti Foundation in Paris, the Pera Museum team, and all
individuals and institutions that helped bring this exhibition to life.
We would also like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to art lovers in Turkey and abroad
who have shown great interest and provided us with their full support, and the valuable partners we
collaborated with, as Pera Museum became one of the leading institutions in its field through the
exhibitions and events held over the past decade.
We look forward to many more decades in which we will continue to open new horizons in the life of
art and culture in Turkey!

Foreword
The Giacometti Foundation is happy to exhibit the works of Alberto Giacometti for the first time in
stanbul in collaboration with Pera Museum. The artist himself would have doubtless enjoyed seeing his
works in this context, standing next to Byzantine mosaics, which as he often stated were very close to
his own conception of art. Giacometti spent all his energy on his work; even though he travelled
infrequently, he had established close links with art forms of distant lands, such as Byzantium, Egypt,
Africa, and Oceania, adding them to his intellectual repertoire. He forged these links in the name of
fidelity to reality; he liked to say he depicted the reality of the models of Byzantine and Egyptian figures
better than naturalist painting or even photography.
Although this is the first Giacometti exhibition in Turkey, his writings have already been translated into
Turkish and published in 1998. Pera Museums collaboration, and our cooperation with M. zalp Birol,
General Manager of Suna and nan Kra Foundation Culture and Arts Enterprises, Begm Akkoyunlu
Ersz, Head of Temporary Exhibitions, Tania Bahar, Project Manager of Temporary Exhibitions, and the
whole team is ample proof of this interest, and I hope many more will share it. As a result of this
collaboration, we are also very happy to salute the research in history of art conducted by Suna and
nan Kra Foundation. Research and the sharing of knowledge is one of the fundamental missions of
the Giacometti Foundation and the recently established Giacometti Institute as well. I would also like to
thank Alexandre Colliex, our Development Director who made this ambitious project possible, Christian
Alandete, the Associate Curator of the exhibition, and Stphanie Barb-Sicouri, the Head Registrar.
