TONE 3 4AP 4TH MATTHEW ST JOHN & ST CYROS 28 JUNE 2015

ST CYRUS & ST JOHN, WONDERWORKING UNMERCENARIES

TRANSLATION OF HOLY RELICS
St Cyros was a noted Christian Physician in the city of Alexandria,
where he had been born and raised, and he always treated the sick
free of charge - not only curing their bodily afflictions, but also
healing their Spiritual Infirmities.
He would say, Whoever wishes to avoid being ill should refrain from
sin, for sin is often the cause of bodily illness.
Preaching the Holy Gospel, the Unmercenary Physician converted
many pagans to Christ.
During the persecution of Emperor Diocletian (284-305), St Cyros
withdrew into Arabia, where he was tonsured a Monk, and
continued Healing through his Intercessory Prayers having
received the Gift of Healing from the Lord our God.
In the city of Edessa at that time, there lived a pious Christian soldier,
named John,
When persecution of all Christian began, he went to Jerusalem where
he heard about St Cyros, the Wonderworking, Unmercenary
Physician. So he began to search for him, going first to Alexandria
and then to Arabia.
When St John finally found St Cyros, he devoted himself to his service
and remained with him as his faithful Disciple.
When they heard of the arrest of a Christian woman, Athanasia and
her three young daughters, Theoktiste, who was fifteen; Theodota,
who was thirteen; and Eudoxia, who was eleven, St Cyros and St
John hastened to the prison to encourage and comfort them, for
they were worried that when confronted by the terrifying, brutal
tortures, St Athanasia and her daughters would immediately
renounce Christ.
As soon as this was reported to the Governor of the city, St Cyros and St
John were arrested, tried and sentenced to brutal torture.
When the Governor saw their steadfast and fearless Confession of Faith
in Christ, he brought St Athanasia and her daughters to witness their
suffering and the merciless tyrant used every form of torture against
the two Holy Martyrs.
Nevertheless, St Athanasia, St Theoktiste, St Theodota and St Eudoxia
courageously continued to confess Christ, whereupon they were
subjected to being stripped naked and flogged almost to death
before being Perfected by sword (beheaded) and receiving their
Crowns of Glorious Holy Martyrdom.
The two Holy Unmercenaries, St Cyros and St John were also finally
executed, after which Christians buried their Sanctified bodies in
the Church of St Mark the Holy Apostle and Evangelist and
Founder of the Church in Alexandria and All Africa.
In the fifth century the Holy Relics of Sts Cyros and John were
transferred from Canopis to Manuphin. (See account below)
Later on their Holy Relics were transferred to Rome, and from there to
Munchen (Munich).

ROMANS 6 : 18 - 23

Brethren, having been set free from sin,

you have become Servants of
Righteousness.
I speak in human terms because of your
natural limitations.
For just as you once yielded your
members to impurity and to greater
and greater iniquity, so now yield
your members to Righteousness for
Sanctification.
When you were slaves to sin, you were
free in regard to Righteousness.
But then what return did you get from
the things of which you are now
ashamed?
The end of those things is Death.
But now that you have been set free
from sin and have become Servants
of God, the Fruit you get is
Sanctification, and its end Eternal
Life.
The wages of sin is Death.
The Free Gift of God is Eternal Life in
Christ Jesus our Lord.

In 412, the Holy Relics of St Cyros and St John, the Wonder-working

Unmercenary Hieromartyrs were Translated from the city of Konopa,
near Alexandria, Egypt, (where they had been martyred in 311) to
the nearby village of Manuphin.
That Egyptian village had prompted great fear in everyone, since in a
former time there had been a pagan temple that was inhabited by
evil spirits.
Theophilos, the Patriarch of Alexandria & All Africa (385-412) wanted to
Cleanse that region of demons, but before he was able to do so, he
Reposed in Christ.
St Cyril, who was his successor to the See of Alexandria, was, however,
able to fulfil his wishes by the Divine Assistance and Inspiration of
Almighty God.
St Cyril prayed fervently to our Lord Jesus Christ to enable him to fulfil
the exorcism of the terrifying demons that possessed the region of
Manuphin, and while doing so, an Angel of God appeared in a
Vision and commanded him to take the venerable Holy Relics of St
Cyros and St John to Manuphin, where he was to build a church in
honour of their memory.
From that time forth the region was purified of the evil one and his
demons influence, and by the Intercessory Prayers of the
Unmercenary Wonderworking Holy Martyrs, St Cyros and St John,
many Divine Miracles occurred whereby the sick, ailing and infirm
were Healed and restored to full health by Divine Grace.

ST MATTHEW 8 : 5 13

CENTURION

At that time, when our Lord Jesus had

entered Capernaum, a Centurion
went to Him, pleading with Him, and
saying: Lord, my servant is lying at
home, paralysed and dreadfully
tormented.
And Jesus said to him: I will go and
heal him.
And the Centurion replied: Lord, I am
not worthy that Thou should come
under my roof. Only speak a Word,
and my servant will be Healed.
And I, too, am a man under authority having soldiers under me.
And I say to one: Go! and he goes. And
to another: Come! and he comes.
And to my servant: Do this! and he
