General
This engineering manual deals with CR and CRN pumps for high-pressure applications.
A high pressure is achieved in two ways:
Single pump with frequency-controlled high-speed motor, type HS
- CRNE-HS, pump sizes 1 to 20. (From CR5 to CR20 will get on the market in 2009)
Feed pump + high-pressure pump connected in series.
- CRN-SF, pump sizes 3 to 20
- CR, CRN, pump sizes 32 to 150.
The high-pressure pump comes in two designs depending on pump size.
CRNE-HS and CRN-SF:
The chamber stack is upside-down compared to a CR standard pump.
CR, CRN:
Standard pump with or without bearing flange.
The pressure generated by the high-pressure pump makes special demands to the design.
This engineering manual primarily describes how to size the pumps and what to take into
concideration.
The CRN high-pressure series is a multi-purpose pump range suitable for a variety of
different applications demanding reliable and cost-efficient supply. CRN handles a variety of
liquids from potable water to industrial liquids within a very wide temperature, flow and
pressure scale.
Fore more details see the data booklet CR, CRN high pressure.

Consideration
Before you start sizing high pressure pumps there are some consideration you have to do.
Underneath is listed some of them.

Can the pump job be done with one pump, or if necessary by running the pump at a
higher speed.
Do we need 2 pumps in serial.
If we choose series connected pumps, can we then use 2 from the same series for
example to CRN 10, ore do we need to use a bigger first pump because big variation
in the flow when switching from production to CIP mode.
Must there be mounted any measuring devices after ore between the pumps. This
kind off equipment is often PN16, which means we will have to make sure that the
first pump isnt capable of making a pressure higher then 16 bar against closed valve.
Can the total pressure after the 2 pumps be higher then 40 bar, then we will have to
secure the pumps with a security valve.

Construction of the pump

When you talk about construction of the pumps there are 3 things that we have to think
about, inlet pressure to the pumps, total max pressure and motor size.

Inlet pressure.:
The inlet pressure is often a problem when you have to pumps in series. Then the feet pump
often is capable of delivering a higher pressure then what is allowed for the high pressure
pump. If the pressure gets above what is mentioned in the table below you will have to
make the high pressure pump with a bearing flange. The list Is from the CR data booklet.

Total pressure.:
If the total pressure gets above what is allowable for the standard pump it must me maid as
a high pressure version. This means that it will be maid with a strengthen sleev and with
connections that can handle the pressure.
The 3 most common used connections on CR pumps are the folloving.
PJE clutch.: This connection can handle up to PN 40 but is only made for the small and
medium range. This means that from the CR(N) 32 and up the connection type isnt possible.

DIN flange.: Fore all pump sizes and up to PN 40.

TRI Clamp.: Only for the small and medium range and up to PN 25.

Motor.:
It is important to be aware of the power size of the motor when you want to do pressure
and flow by running the pump at a faster speed then the standard 50 ore 60 Hz.
The limit for how high you can go in speed is as a main rule limited by the stamped motor
current.
However it isnt recommendable on the small series (CR1S CR1 CR3 CR5) to go above
5500 r/min. On the medium series (CR10 CR 15 CR 20) it is not recommendable to go
above 4100 r/min. On the large series there is no rule of thumb. But if you want to go
above what there is stated on the nameplate it is always recommendable to contact a
Grundfos technician.
Sizing.
When you start sizing high pressure pumps it is a good idea to start in the data booklet CR,
CRN high pressure.
In the data booklet you often can find the pump that can deliver the flow and pressure you
need. If the pumps are used to CIP you shall look for the duty point in production mode.
Often you will, with the help of the curves, be able to find exactly the 2 pumps you need.

If there is a big variation between production flow/head and CIP flow/head it is sometimes
not possible to find the pumps in the data booklet. If you have such a situation you can with
advantage try different pump sizes in WinCaps ore WepCaps.
Be aware that some of the pumps in the high pressure data booklet are build as high
pressure pumps and because of that built fore high inlet and total pressure. Others are just
standard pumps, and must be configured in SAP if you need them as high pressure versions.
As mentioned earlier the job sometimes can be done by one pump if you run it at a higher
speed then the standard. All the HS pumps are shown in the high pressure data booklet.
If you choose a one pump solution you can with advantages choose a motor with integrated
frequency converter ore a wall mounted converter, both Grundfos products. The advantage
of choosing a Grundfos solution is that you can get the frequency converter programmed
from factory, to run at exactly the speed you need in your situation.
Example.
Introduction
An industry customer is calling because he needs 1 or 2 pumps to his production. He is
operating with 2 different flows and pressures do to the production situation and the CIP
(Cleaning in place) situation. He has the specifications listed below.
Production.
Flow.:
32 m3/h
Pressure.:
38 bar
Liquid.:
as water
CIP.
Flow.:
Pressure.:
Liquid.:

42 m3/h
7 bar
As water

First I looked in the high pressure catalogue to find pumps that can do the production
situation. But unfortunately the CRN 32 showed here will not be able to do the job. We can
also se that it will impossible for the CRN32 to deliver the amount of flow in CIP situation.
Because of this I decide to go for a CRN45 as my first pump and a CRN 32 as second.

Configuration of the pumps.

Pump no 1.: CRN45-8-2 in standard version
Pump no 2.: CRN32-14 in a 40 bar version and with bearing flange due to the high inlet
pressure.
Be aware that the pumps is capable of doing a max pressure higher then 40 bar, the
customer has to make sure that dont happen.
